Global existence, scattering and blow-up for the focusing NLS on the hyperbolic space

We prove global well-posedness, scattering and blow-up results for energy-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the hyperbolic space. We show in particular the existence of a critical element for scattering for all energy-subcritical power nonlinearities. For mass-supercritical nonlinearity, we show a scattering vs blow-up dichotomy for radial solutions of the equation in low dimension, below natural mass and energy thresholds given by the ground states of the equation. The proofs are based on trapping by mass and energy, compactness and rigidity, and are similar to the ones on the Euclidean space, with a new argument, based on generalized Pohozaev identities, to obtain appropriate monotonicity formulas.

Some constructions for the fractional Laplacian on noncompact manifolds

We give a definition of the fractional Laplacian on some noncompact manifolds, through an extension problem introduced by Caffarelli-Silvestre. While this definition in the compact case is straightforward, in the noncompact setting one needs to have a precise control of the behavior of the metric at infinity and geometry plays a crucial role. First we give explicit calculations in the hyperbolic space, including a formula for the kernel and a trace Sobolev inequality. Then we consider more general noncompact manifolds, where the problem reduces to obtain suitable upper bounds for the heat kernel.

The initial value problem for the binormal flow with rough data

In this article we consider the initial value problem of the binormal flow with initial data given by curves that are regular except at one point where they have a corner. We prove that under suitable conditions on the initial data a unique regular solution exists for strictly positive and strictly negative times. Moreover, this solution satisfies a weak version of the equation for all times and can be seen as a perturbation of a suitably chosen self-similar solution. Conversely, we also prove that if at time t = 1 a small regular perturbation of a self-similar solution is taken as initial condition then there exists a unique solution that at time t = 0 is regular except at a point where it has a corner with the same angle as the one of the self-similar solution. This solution can be extended for negative times. The proof uses the full strength of the previous papers [9], [2], [3] and [4] on the study of small perturbations of self-similar solutions. A compactness argument is used to avoid the weighted conditions we needed in [4], as well as a more refined analysis of the asymptotic in time and in space of the tangent and normal vectors.

Collisions of vortex filament pairs

We consider the problem of collisions of vortex filaments for a model introduced by Klein, Majda and Damodaran, and Zakharov to describe the interaction of almost parallel vortex filaments in three-dimensional fluids. Since the results of Crow examples of collisions are searched as perturbations of antiparallel translating pairs of filaments, with initial perturbations related to the unstable mode of the linearized problem; most results are numerical calculations. In this article we first consider a related model for the evolution of pairs of filaments and we display another type of initial perturbation leading to collision in finite time. Moreover we give numerical evidence that it also leads to collision through the initial model. We finally study the self-similar solutions of the model.

Evolution by the vortex filament equation of curves with a corner

In this proceedings article we shall survey a series of results on the stability of self-similar solutions of the vortex filament equation. This equation is a geometric flow for curves in $\mathbb R^3$ and it is used as a model for the evolution of a vortex filament in fluid mechanics. The main theorem gives, under suitable assumptions, the existence and description of solutions generated by curves with a corner, for positive and negative times. Its companion theorem describes the evolution of perturbations of self-similar solutions up to a singularity formation infinite time, and beyond this time. We shall give a sketch of the proof. These results were obtained in collaboration with Luis Vega.

Stability of the selfsimilar dynamics of a vortex filament

In this paper we continue our investigation about selfsimilar solutions of the vortex filament equation, also known as the binormal flow (BF) or the localized induction equation (LIE). Our main result is the stability of the selfsimilar dynamics of small pertubations of a given selfsimilar solution. The proof relies on finding precise asymptotics in space and time for the tangent and the normal vectors of the perturbations. A main ingredient in the proof is the control of the evolution of weighted norms for a cubic 1-D Schrödinger equation, connected to the binormal flow by Hasimoto's transform.

Evolution, interaction and collisions of vortex filaments

Several progresses have been done very recently on models for the dynamics of one or more vortex filaments in three-dimensional fluids. In this article we survey the recent and previous results in this topic. We also present some new situations of filaments collapse.

Global existence and collisions for symmetric configurations of nearly parallel vortex filaments

We consider the Schrödinger system with Newton-type interactions that was derived by R. Klein, A. Majda and K. Damodaran [18] to modelize the dynamics of N nearly parallel vortex filaments in a 3-dimensional homogeneous incompressible uid. The known large time existence results are due to C. Kenig, G. Ponce and L. Vega [17] and concern the interaction of two filaments and particular configurations of three filaments. In this article we prove large time existence results for particular configurations of four nearly parallel filaments and for a class of configurations of N nearly parallel filaments for any N\geq 2. We also show the existence of travelling wave type dynamics. Finally we describe configurations leading to collision.

Dispersion for the Schrödinger Equation on Networks

In this paper we consider the Schrödinger equation on a network formed by a tree with the last generation of edges formed by infinite strips. We give an explicit description of the solution of the linear Schrödinger equation with constant coefficients. This allows us to prove dispersive estimates, which in turn are useful for solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The proof extends also to the laminar case of positive step-function coefficients having a finite number of discontinuities.

Minimal blow-up solutions to the mass-critical inhomogeneous NLS equation

We consider the mass-critical focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the presence of an external potential, when the nonlinearity is inhomogeneous. We show that if the inhomogeneous factor in front of the nonlinearity is sufficiently flat at a critical point, then there exists a solution which blows up in finite time with the maximal (unstable) rate at this point. In the case where the critical point is a maximum, this solution has minimal mass among the blow-up solutions. As a corollary, we also obtain unstable blow-up solutions of the mass-critical Schrodinger equation on some surfaces. The proof is based on properties of the linearized operator around the ground state, and on a full use of the invariances of the equation with an homogeneous nonlinearity and no potential, via time-dependent modulations.

Scattering for 1D cubic NLS and singular vortex dynamics

In this paper we study the stability of the self-similar solutions of the binormal flow, which is a model for the dynamics of vortex filaments in fluids and super-fluids. These particular solutions $χ_a(t,x)$ form a family of evolving regular curves of $\mathbb R^3$ that develop a singularity in finite time, indexed by a parameter $a>0$. We consider curves that are small regular perturbations of $χ_a(t_0,x)$ for a fixed time $t_0$. In particular, their curvature is not vanishing at infinity, so we are not in the context of known results of local existence for the binormal flow. Nevertheless, we construct in this article solutions of the binormal flow with these initial data. Moreover, these solutions become also singular in finite time. Our approach uses the Hasimoto transform what leads us to study the long-time behavior of a 1D cubic NLS equation with time-depending coefficients and small regular perturbations of the constant solution as initial data. We prove asymptotic completeness for this equation in appropriate function spaces.

On the stability of a singular vortex dynamics

In this paper we address the question of the singular vortex dynamics exhibited in [15], which generates a corner in finite time. The purpose is to prove that under some appropriate small regular perturbation the corner still remains. Our approach uses the Hasimoto transform and deals with the long range scattering properties of a Gross-Pitaevski equation with time-variable coefficients.

On scattering for NLS: from Euclidean to hyperbolic space

We prove asymptotic completeness in the energy space for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation posed on hyperbolic space in the radial case, in space dimension at least 4, and for any energy-subcritical, defocusing, power nonlinearity. The proof is based on simple Morawetz estimates and weighted Strichartz estimates. We investigate the same question on spaces which kind of interpolate between Euclidean space and hyperbolic space, showing that the family of short range nonlinearities becomes larger and larger as the space approaches the hyperbolic space. Finally, we describe the large time behavior of radial solutions to the free dynamics.

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the hyperbolic space

In this article we study some aspects of dispersive and concentration phenomena for the Schrödinger equation posed on hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$, in order to see if the negative curvature of the manifold gets the dynamics more stable than in the Euclidean case. It is indeed the case for the dispersive properties : we prove that the dispersion inequality is valid, in a stronger form than the one on $\mathbb{R}^n$. However, the geometry does not have enough of an effect to avoid the concentration phenomena and the picture is actually worse than expected. The critical nonlinearity power for blow-up turns out to be the same as in the euclidean case, and we prove that there are more explosive solutions for critical and supercritical nonlinearities.

Weighted Strichartz estimates for radial Schrödinger equation on noncompact manifolds

We prove global weighted Strichartz estimates for radial solutions of linear Schrödinger equation on a class of rotationally symmetric noncompact manifolds, generalizing the known results on hyperbolic and Damek-Ricci spaces. This yields classical Strichartz estimates with a larger class of exponents than in the Euclidian case and improvements for the scattering theory. The manifolds, whose volume element grows polynomially or exponentially at infinity, are characterized essentially by negativity conditions on the curvature, which shows in particular that the rich algebraic structure of the Hyperbolic and Damek-Ricci spaces is not the cause of the improved dispersive properties of the equation. The proofs are based on known dispersive results for the equation with potential on the Euclidean space, and on a new one, valid for C^1 potentials decaying like 1/r^2 at infinity.

On the Dirac delta as initial condition for nonlinear Schrödinger equations

In this article we will study the initial value problem for some Schrödinger equations with Diraclike initial data and therefore with infinite L2 mass, obtaining positive results for subcritical nonlinearities. In the critical case and in one dimension we prove that after some renormalization the corresponding solution has finite energy. This allows us to conclude a stability result in the defocusing setting. These problems are related to the existence of a singular dynamics for Schrödinger maps through the so called Hasimoto transformation.

Scattering theory for radial nonlinear Schrödinger equations on hyperbolic space

We study the long time behavior of radial solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations on hyperbolic space. We show that the usual distinction between short range and long range nonlinearity is modified: the geometry of the hyperbolic space makes every power-like nonlinearity short range. The proofs rely on weighted Strichartz estimates, which imply Strichartz estimates for a broader family of admissible pairs, and on Morawetz type inequalities. The latter are established without symmetry assumptions.
