Unpolarized Transverse Momentum Distributions from a global fit of Drell-Yan and Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering data

We present an extraction of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions based on more than two thousands data points from several experiments for two different processes: semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs. The baseline analysis is performed with a Monte Carlo replica method resumming large logarithms at N3LL accuracy. The resulting description of the data is very good ($χ^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.06$). For semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, predictions for multiplicities are normalized by factors that cure the discrepancy with data introduced by higher-order perturbative corrections.

Revisiting evolution equations for generalised parton distributions

We revisit the evolution of generalised parton distributions (GPDs) in momentum space. We formulate the evolution kernels at one-loop in perturbative QCD (pQCD) in a form suitable for numerical implementation and that allows for an accurate study of their properties. This leads to the first open-source implementation of GPD evolution equations able to cover the entire kinematic region and allowing for heavy-quark-threshold crossings. The numerical implementation of the GPD evolution equations is publicly accessible through the APFEL++ evolution library and is available within the PARTONS framework. Our formulation makes use of the operator definition of GPDs in light-cone gauge renormalised in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ scheme. For the sake of clarity, we recompute the evolution kernels at one-loop in pQCD, confirming previous calculations. We obtain general conditions on the evolution kernels deriving from the GPD sum rules and show that our formulation obeys these conditions. We analytically show that our calculation reproduces the DGLAP and the ERBL equations in the appropriate limits and that it guarantees the continuity of GPDs. We numerically check that the evolved GPDs fulfil DGLAP and ERBL limits, continuity, and polynomiality. We benchmark our numerical implementation against analytical evolution in conformal space. Finally, we perform a numerical comparison to an existing implementation of GPD evolution finding a general good agreement on the kinematic region accessible to the latter. This work provides a pedagogical description of GPD evolution equations which benefits from a renewed interest as future colliders, such as the electron-ion colliders in the US and in China, are being designed. It also paves the way to the extension of GPD evolution codes to higher accuracies in pQCD desirable for precision phenomenology at these facilities.

Extraction of Pion Transverse Momentum Distributions from Drell-Yan data

We map the distribution of unpolarized quarks inside a unpolarized pion as a function of the quark's transverse momentum, encoded in unpolarized Transverse Momentum Distributions (TMDs). We extract the pion TMDs from available data of unpolarized pion-nucleus Drell-Yan processes, where the cross section is differential in the lepton-pair transverse momentum. In the cross section, pion TMDs are convoluted with nucleon TMDs that we consistently take from our previous studies. We obtain a fairly good agreement with data. We present also predictions for pion-nucleus scattering that is being measured by the COMPASS Collaboration.

Pion and kaon fragmentation functions at next-to-next-to-leading order

We present a new determination of unpolarised charged pion and kaon fragmentation functions from a set of single-inclusive electron-positron annihilation and lepton-nucleon semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering data. The determination includes next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to both processes, and is carried out in a framework that combines a neural-network parametrisation of fragmentation functions with a Monte Carlo representation of their uncertainties. We discuss the quality of the determination, in particular its dependence on higher order corrections.

Towards the phenomenological implications of the Physical Scheme in PDF fits

We describe the impact on PDF extractions of the 'Physical Scheme', a heavy-quark mass scheme that accounts for the effects of intrinsic heavy-quarks and provides a way to smoothly transition over the heavy-quark thresholds. The modifications made to the conventional $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme splitting functions and $α_s$ running will be emphasised, collectively giving rise to a new Physical Scheme PDF evolution. We also present the analytic formulae for the DIS coefficient functions at NLO in the Physical Scheme and show results for the $F_2$ charm DIS structure function. Motivated by the upcoming statistics from the High-Luminosity LHC, embodying the next phase of the precision physics era at the LHC, as well as in time from the Electron-Ion collider, we end by highlighting the need to quantify the effect of these corrections on PDF extractions over a wide range of momentum fractions $x$ and scales $Q^2$ and propose the use of $\texttt{xFitter}$ for doing so.

Matching generalised transverse-momentum-dependent distributions onto generalised parton distributions at one loop

The operator definition of generalised transverse-momentum-dependent (GTMD) distributions is exploited to compute for the first time the full set of one-loop corrections to the off-forward matching functions. These functions allow one to obtain GTMDs in the perturbative regime in terms of generalised parton distributions (GPDs). In the unpolarised case, non-perturbative corrections can be incorporated using recent determinations of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions. Evolution effects for GTMDs closely follow those for TMDs and can thus be easily accounted for up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. As a by-product, the relevant one-loop anomalous dimensions are derived, confirming previous results. As a practical application, numerical results for a specific kind of GTMDs are presented, highlighting some salient features.

Accessing pion GPDs through the Sullivan process: is it feasible?

Describing hadronic structure is one of the most intriguing problems in physics. In this respect, generalized parton distributions (GPDs) constitute an outstanding tool, allowing to draw "three dimensional pictures" of hadron's inside. Starting from contemporary models for pion's GPDs fulfilling all constraints imposed by QCD, we compute Compton form factors (CFFs) of pions subjected to deeply virtual Compton scattering. We show the behaviour of CFFs to be gluon-dominated at EIC's kinematics. Finally we evaluate lepton-beam-spin asymmetries in the Sullivan process, demonstrating the existence of such and thus triggering optimism about the possibility of probing pion's 3D structure at electron-ion colliders.

Combining N3LO QCD calculations and parton showers for hadronic collision events

Detailed and precise background predictions are the backbone of large parts of high-energy collider phenomenology. This requires to embed precision QCD calculations into detailed event generators, to produce comprehensive software simulations. Only continued progress in this direction will allow us to exploit the full potential of measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, or at a future Electron-Ion Collider. This work presents a method to combine third-order QCD calculations for hadronic scattering processes with Monte-Carlo event generators, thus enabling a new generation of precision predictions.

Pion GPDs: A path toward phenomenology

We introduce a new family of Generalised Parton Distribution models able to fulfil by construction all the theoretical properties imposed by QCD. These models are built on standard Parton Distribution Functions and extended to off-forward kinematics through a well-defined procedure. We apply this strategy on the pion, first handling a simple but insightful algebraic model, and then exploiting state-of-the-art computations obtained in continuum QCD. We compare these models with a more standard one relying on an xFitter extraction of the pion Parton Distribution Functions. The results for both quark and gluon Generalised Parton Distributions are presented and exploited for calculation of Electromagnetic, Gravitational and Compton Form Factors. Results on the latter highlight the relevance of next-to-leading order corrections, even in the so-called valence region.

A determination of unpolarised pion fragmentation functions using semi-inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering data: MAPFF1.0

We present MAPFF1.0, a determination of unpolarised charged-pion fragmentation functions (FFs) from a set of single-inclusive $e^+e^-$ annihilation and lepton-nucleon semi-inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering (SIDIS) data. FFs are parametrised in terms of a neural network (NN) and fitted to data exploiting the knowledge of the analytic derivative of the NN itself w.r.t. its free parameters. Uncertainties on the FFs are determined by means of the Monte Carlo sampling method properly accounting for all sources of experimental uncertainties, including that of parton distribution functions. Theoretical predictions for the relevant observables, as well as evolution effects, are computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in perturbative QCD. We exploit the flavour sensitivity of the SIDIS measurements delivered by the HERMES and COMPASS experiments to determine a minimally-biased set of seven independent FF combinations. Moreover, we discuss the quality of the fit to the SIDIS data with low virtuality $Q^2$ showing that, as expected, low-$Q^2$ SIDIS measurements are generally harder to describe within a NLO-accurate perturbative framework.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions up to N$^3$LL from Drell-Yan data

We present an extraction of unpolarised Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Parton Distribution Functions based on Drell-Yan production data from different experiments, including those at the LHC, and spanning a wide kinematic range. We deal with experimental uncertainties by properly taking into account correlations. We include resummation of logarithms of the transverse momentum of the vector boson up to N$^3$LL order, and we include non-perturbative contributions. These ingredients allow us to obtain a remarkable agreement with the data.

On the derivatives of feed-forward neural networks

In this paper we present a C++ implementation of the analytic derivative of a feed-forward neural network with respect to its free parameters for an arbitrary architecture, known as back-propagation. We dubbed this code NNAD (Neural Network Analytic Derivatives) and interfaced it with the widely-used ceres-solver minimiser to fit neural networks to pseudodata in two different least-squares problems. The first is a direct fit of Legendre polynomials. The second is a somewhat more involved minimisation problem where the function to be fitted takes part in an integral. Finally, using a consistent framework, we assess the efficiency of our analytic derivative formula as compared to numerical and automatic differentiation as provided by ceres-solver. We thus demonstrate the advantage of using NNAD in problems involving both deep or shallow neural networks.

PDF Profiling Using the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in Neutral Current Drell-Yan Production

Non-perturbative QCD effects from Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) may be constrained by using high-statistics Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data. Drell-Yan (DY) measurements in the Charged Current (CC) case provide one of the primary means to do this, in the form of the lepton charge asymmetry. We investigate here the impact of measurements in Neutral Current (NC) DY data mapped onto the Forward-Backward Asymmetry ($A_{\rm FB}$) on PDF determinations, by using the open source fit platform {\tt{xFitter}}. We demonstrate the potential impact of $A_{\rm FB}$ data on PDF determinations and perform a thorough analysis of related uncertainties.

Probing the strange content of the proton with charm production in charged current at LHeC

We study charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the xFitter framework. Recent results from the LHC have focused renewed attention on the determination of the strange-quark parton distribution function (PDF) and the DIS charm process provides important complementary constraints on this quantity. We examine the current PDF uncertainty, and use LHeC pseudodata to estimate the potential improvement from this proposed facility. As xFitter implements both fixed-flavor- and variable-flavor-number schemes, we can compare the impact of these different theoretical choices; this highlights some interesting aspects of multi-scale calculations. We find that the high-statistics LHeC data covering a wide kinematic range could substantially reduce the strange PDF uncertainty.

Recent QCD results from the xFitter project: Probing the strange content of the proton with charm production in charged current at LHeC

We investigate charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the xFitter program. xFitter is an open-source software framework for the determination of PDFs and the analysis of QCD physics, and has been used for a variety of LHC studies. The study of charged current DIS charm production provides an important perspective on the strange quark PDF, s(x). We make use of the xFitter tools to study the present s(x) constraints, and then use LHeC pseudodata to infer how these might improve. Furthermore, as xFitter implements both Fixed Flavor and Variable Flavor number schemes, we can examine the impact of these different theoretical choices; this highlights some interesting aspects of multi-scale calculations. This study provides a practical illustration of the many features of xFitter.

Extraction of unpolarized quark transverse momentum dependent parton distributions from Drell-Yan/Z-boson production

We present the extraction of unpolarized quark transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and the non-perturbative part of TMD evolution kernel from the global analysis of Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production data. The analysis is performed at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, using the $ζ$-prescription. The estimation of the error-propagation from the experimental uncertainties to non-perturbative function is made by the replica method. The importance of the inclusion of the precise LHC data and its influence on the determination of non-perturbative functions is discussed.

Charged hadron fragmentation functions from collider data

We present NNFF1.1h, a new determination of unidentified charged-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs) and their uncertainties. Experimental measurements of transverse-momentum distributions for charged-hadron production in proton-(anti)proton collisions at the Tevatron and at the LHC are used to constrain a set of FFs originally determined from electron-positron annihilation data. Our analysis is performed at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. We find that the hadron-collider data is consistent with the electron-positron data and that it significantly constrains the gluon FF. We verify the reliability of our results upon our choice of the kinematic cut in the hadron transverse momentum applied to the hadron-collider data and their consistency with NNFF1.0, our previous determination of the FFs of charged pions, kaons, and protons/antiprotons.
