Generalized McVittie geometry in Horndeski gravity with matter

We investigate McVittie and generalized McVittie solutions for Horndeski gravity with a spatially homogeneous gravitational scalar field, which is stealth at small scales near the central object but, at large scales, sources the FLRW universe in which the central inhomogeneity is embedded. Unlike previous studies, we include matter and obtain generalized McVittie solutions in the extended cuscuton model. The possible configurations are classified according to the time-dependence of the gravitational coupling, the radial energy flow, the accretion rate onto the central object, and the Hubble rate.

Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmology through the lens of gravitoelectromagnetism

Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmology is examined from the point of view of gravitoelectromagnetism, in the approximation of spacetime regions small in comparison with the Hubble radius. The usual Lorentz gauge is not appropriate for this situation, while the Painlevé-Gullstrand gauge is rather natural. Several non-trivial features and differences with respect to "standard" asymptotically flat gravitoelectromagnetism are discussed.

First-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor cosmology

A new thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity is applied to spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies in this class of theories and tested on analytical solutions. A forever-expanding universe approaches the Einstein "state of equilibrium" with zero effective temperature at late times and departs from it near spacetime singularities. "Cooling" by expansion and "heating" by singularities compete near the Big Rip, where it is found that the effective temperature diverges in the case of a conformally coupled scalar field.

How fundamental is entropy? From non-extensive statistics and black hole physics to the holographic dark universe

We propose a new entropy construct that generalizes the Tsallis, Rényi, Sharma-Mittal, Barrow, Kaniadakis, and Loop Quantum Gravity entropies and reduces to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in a certain limit. This proposal is applied to the Schwarzschild black hole and to spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmology, where it is shown that it can potentially describe inflation and/or holographic dark energy.

Helmoltz problem for the Riccati equation from an analogous Friedmann equation

We report a solution of the inverse Lagrangian problem for the first order Riccati differential equation by means of an analogy with the Friedmann equation of a suitable Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe in general relativity. This analogous universe has fine-tuned parameters and is unphysical, but it suggests a Lagrangian and a Hamiltonian for the Riccati equation and for the many physical systems described by it.

A new approach to the thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity

We discuss and expand a new approach to the thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity and its diffusion toward general relativity (seen as an equilibrium state) proposed in a previous Letter [Phys. Rev. D 103, L121501 (2021)], upon which we build. We describe scalar-tensor gravity as an effective dissipative fluid and apply Eckart's first order thermodynamics to it, obtaining explicitly effective quantities such as heat flux, "temperature of gravity", viscosities, entropy density, plus an equation describing the "diffusion" to Einstein gravity. These quantities, still missing in the usual thermodynamics of spacetime, are obtained with minimal assumptions. Furthermore, we examine certain exact solutions of scalar-tensor gravity to test the proposed formalism and gain some physical insight on the "approach to equilibrium" for this class of theories.

Multi-fluid cosmology in Einstein gravity: analytical solutions

We review analytical solutions of the Einstein equations which are expressed in terms of elementary functions and describe Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universes sourced by multiple (real or effective) perfect fluids with constant equations of state. Effective fluids include spatial curvature, the cosmological constant, and scalar fields. We provide a description with unified notation, explicit and parametric forms of the solutions, and relations between different expressions present in the literature. Interesting solutions from a modern point of view include interacting fluids and scalar fields. Old solutions, integrability conditions, and solution methods keep being rediscovered, which motivates a review with modern eyes.

The curious case of the Buchdahl-Land-Sultana-Wyman-Ibañez-Sanz spacetime

We revisit Wyman's "other" scalar field solution of the Einstein equations and its Sultana generalization to positive cosmological constant, which has a finite 3-space and corresponds to a special case of a stiff fluid solution proposed by Buchdahl and Land and, later, by Ibañez and Sanz to model relativistic stars. However, there is a hidden cosmological constant and the peculiar geometry prevents the use of this spacetime to model relativistic stars.

The Life and Science of Thanu Padmanabhan

Thanu Padmanabhan was a renowned Indian theoretical physicist known for his research in general relativity, cosmology, and quantum gravity. In an extraordinary career spanning forty-two years, he published more than three hundred research articles, wrote ten highly successful technical and popular books, and mentored nearly thirty graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. He is best known for his deep work investigating gravitation as an emergent thermodynamic phenomenon. He was an outstanding teacher, and an indefatigable populariser of science, who travelled very widely to motivate and inspire young students. Paddy, as he was affectionately known, was also a close friend to his students and collaborators, treating them as part of his extended academic family. On September 17, 2021 Paddy passed away very unexpectedly, at the age of sixty-four and at the height of his research career, while serving as a Distinguished Professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune. His untimely demise has come as a shock to his family and friends and colleagues. In this article, several of them have come together to pay their tributes and share their fond memories of Paddy.

Area-law versus Rényi and Tsallis black hole entropies

The Rényi and Tsallis entropies are discussed as possible alternatives to the Bekenstein-Hawking area-law entropy. It is pointed out how replacing the entropy notion, but not the Hawking temperature and the thermodynamical energy may render the whole black hole thermodynamics inconsistent. The possibility to relate the Rényi and Tsallis entropies with the quantum gravity corrected Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is discussed.

First-order thermodynamics of Horndeski gravity

We extend to the Horndeski realm the irreversible thermodynamics description of gravity previously studied in "first generation" scalar-tensor theories. We identify a subclass of Horndeski theories as an out-of--equilibrium state, while general relativity corresponds to an equilibrium state. In this context, we identify an effective heat current, "temperature of gravity", and shear viscosity in the space of theories. The identification is accomplished by recasting the field equations as effective Einstein equations with an effective dissipative fluid, with Einstein gravity as the equilibrium state, following Eckart's first-order thermodynamics.

Revisiting geodesic observers in cosmology

Geodesic observers in cosmology are revisited. The coordinates based on freely falling observers introduced by Gautreau in de Sitter and Einstein-de Sitter spaces (and, previously, by Gautreau and Hoffmann in Schwarzschild space) are extended to general FLRW universes. We identify situations in which the relation between geodesic and comoving coordinates can be expressed explicitly in terms of elementary functions. In general, geodesic coordinates in cosmology turn out to be rather cumbersome and limited to the region below the apparent horizon.

Disformal mappings of spherical DHOST geometries

New solutions of DHOST theories can be generated by applying a disformal tranformation to a known seed solution. We examine the nature of spherically symmetric solutions of DHOST gravity obtained by disforming static spherical scalar field solutions, or stealth solutions, of general relativity. It is shown that, in these cases, black hole horizons are never created by disforming a black hole seed. New DHOST solutions are then created by disforming two lesser known scalar field solutions of general relativity: Wyman's ``other'' solution and the Husain-Martinez-Nuñez one. These new solutions demonstrate that one can obtain black hole horizons, wormhole throats, or horizonless geometries by disforming non-stealth, time-dependent, seeds.

Maximum force and cosmic censorship

Although the idea that there is a maximum force in nature seems untenable, we explore whether this concept can make sense in the restricted context of black holes. We discuss uniformly accelerated and cosmological black holes and we find that, although a maximum force acting on these black holes can in principle be introduced, this concept is rather tautological.

Thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity

Previously, the Einstein equation has been described as an equation of state, general relativity as the equilibrium state of gravity, and $f({\cal R})$ gravity as a non-equilibrium one. We apply Eckart's first order thermodynamics to the effective dissipative fluid describing scalar-tensor gravity. Surprisingly, we obtain simple expressions for the effective heat flux, "temperature of gravity", shear and bulk viscosity, and entropy density, plus a generalized Fourier law in a consistent Eckart thermodynamical picture. Well-defined notions of temperature and approach to equilibrium, missing in the current thermodynamics of spacetime scenarios, naturally emerge.

Spherical inhomogeneous solutions of Einstein and scalar-tensor gravity: a map of the land

We review spherical and inhomogeneous analytic solutions of the field equations of Einstein and of scalar-tensor gravity, including Brans-Dicke theory, non-minimally (possibly conformally) coupled scalar fields, Horndeski, and beyond Horndeski/DHOST gravity. The zoo includes both static and dynamic solutions, asymptotically flat, and asymptotically Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker ones. We minimize overlap with existing books and reviews and we place emphasis on scalar field spacetimes and on geometries that are "general" within certain classes. Relations between various solutions, which have largely emerged during the last decade, are pointed out.

Analogies between logistic equation and relativistic cosmology

We develop several formal analogies between the logistic equation and the spatially homogeneous and isotropic relativistic cosmology described by the Einstein-Friedmann equations. These analogies produce an effective Lagrangian and Hamiltonian and new symmetries for the logistic equation.
