Black holes in scalar-tensor gravity

Hawking has proven that black holes which are stationary as the endpoint of gravitational collapse in Brans--Dicke theory (without a potential) are no different than in general relativity. We extend this proof to the much more general class of scalar-tensor and f(R) gravity theories, without assuming any symmetries apart from stationarity.

Making sense of the bizarre behaviour of horizons in the McVittie spacetime

The bizarre behaviour of the apparent (black hole and cosmological) horizons of the McVittie spacetime is discussed using, as an analogy, the Schwarzschild-de Sitter-Kottler spacetime (which is a special case of McVittie anyway). For a dust-dominated "background" universe, a black hole cannot exist at early times because its (apparent) horizon would be larger than the cosmological(apparent) horizon. A phantom-dominated "background" universe causes this situation, and the horizon behaviour, to be time-reversed.

The correspondence between a scalar field and an effective perfect fluid

It is widely acknowledged that, for formal purposes, a minimally coupled scalar field is equivalent to an effective perfect fluid with equation of state determined by the scalar potential. This correspondence is not complete because the Lagrangian densities P and -rho, which are equivalent for a perfect fluid, are not equivalent for a minimally coupled scalar field. The exchange between these two Lagrangian densities amounts to exchanging a canonical scalar field with a phantom scalar field.

Black Holes in the Universe: Generalized Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi Solutions

We present new exact solutions {which presumably describe} black holes in the background of a spatially flat, pressureless dark matter (DM)-, or dark matter plus dark energy (DM+DE)-, or quintom-dominated universe. These solutions generalize Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi metrics. For a DM- or (DM+DE)-dominated universe, the area of the black hole apparent horizon (AH) decreases with the expansion of the universe while that of the cosmic AH increases. However, for a quintom-dominated universe, the black hole AH first shrinks and then expands, while the cosmic AH first expands and then shrinks. A (DM+DE)-dominated universe containing a black hole will evolve to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution with both AHs approaching constant size. In a quintom-dominated universe, the black hole and cosmic AHs will coincide at a certain time, after which the singularity becomes naked, violating Cosmic Censorship.

Cosmological apparent and trapping horizons

The dynamics of particle, event, and apparent horizons in FLRW space are discussed. The apparent horizon is trapping when the Ricci curvature is positive. This simple criterion coincides with the condition for the Kodama-Hayward apparent horizon temperature to be positive, and also discriminates between timelike and spacelike character of the apparent horizon. We discuss also the entropy of apparent cosmological horizons in extended theories of gravity and we use the generalized 2nd law to discard an exact solution of Brans-Dicke gravity as unphysical.

R^n gravity and the chameleon

The Solar System bounds on R^n gravity are often ignored in the literature by invoking the chameleon mechanism. We show that in order for the latter to work, the exponent n must be ridicolously close to unity and, therefore, these theories are severely constrained.

The horizon-entropy increase law for causal and quasi-local horizons and conformal field redefinitions

We explicitly prove the horizon-entropy increase law for both causal and quasi-locally defined horizons in scalar-tensor and $f(R)$ gravity theories. Contrary to causal event horizons, future outer trapping horizons are not conformally invariant and we provide a modification of trapping horizons to complete the proof, using the idea of generalised entropy. This modification means they are no longer foliated by marginally outer trapped surfaces but fixes the location of the horizon under a conformal transformation. We also discuss the behaviour of horizons in "veiled" general relativity and show, using this new definition, how to locate cosmological horizons in flat Minkowski space with varying units, which is physically identified with a spatially flat FLRW spacetime.

Gauge-invariant gravitational wave modes in pre-big bang cosmology

The t<0 branch of pre-big bang cosmological scenarios is subject to a gravitational wave instability. The unstable behaviour of tensor perturbations is derived in a very simple way in Hwang's covariant and gauge-invariant formalism developed for extended theories of gravity. A simple interpretation of this instability as the effect of an "antifriction" is given, and it is argued that a universe must eventually enter the expanding phase.

A Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi cosmological wormhole

We present a new analytical solution of the Einstein field equations describing a wormhole shell of zero thickness joining two Lemaıtre-Tolman-Bondi universes, with no radial accretion. The material on the shell satisfies the energy conditions and, at late times, the shell becomes comoving with the dust-dominated cosmic substratum.

Are stealth scalar fields stable?

Non-gravitating (stealth) scalar fields associated with Minkowski space in scalar-tensor gravity are examined. Analytical solutions for both non-minimally coupled scalar field theory and for Brans-Dicke gravity are studied and their stability with respect to tensor perturbations is assessed using a covariant and gauge-invariant formalism developed for alternative gravity. For Brans-Dicke solutions, the stability with respect to homogeneous perturbations is also studied. There are regions of parameter space corresponding to stability and other regions corresponding to instability.

f(R) Theories Of Gravity

Modified gravity theories have received increased attention lately due to combined motivation coming from high-energy physics, cosmology and astrophysics. Among numerous alternatives to Einstein's theory of gravity, theories which include higher order curvature invariants, and specifically the particular class of f(R) theories, have a long history. In the last five years there has been a new stimulus for their study, leading to a number of interesting results. We review here f(R) theories of gravity in an attempt to comprehensively present their most important aspects and cover the largest possible portion of the relevant literature. All known formalisms are presented -- metric, Palatini and metric-affine -- and the following topics are discussed: motivation; actions, field equations and theoretical aspects; equivalence with other theories; cosmological aspects and constraints; viability criteria; astrophysical applications.

Horizons and singularity in Clifton's spherical solution of f(R) vacuum

Due to the failure of Birkhoff's theorem, black holes in f(R) gravity theories in which an effective time-varying cosmological "constant" is present are, in general, dynamical. Clifton's exact spherical solution of R^(1+δ) gravity, which is dynamical and describes a central object embedded in a spatially flat universe, is studied. It is shown that apparent black hole horizons disappear and a naked singularity emerges at late times.

The Jebsen-Birkhoff theorem in alternative gravity

We discuss the validity, or lack thereof, of the Jebsen-Birkhoff theorem in scalar-tensor theories by generalizing it and regarding the Brans-Dicke-like scalar as effective matter. Both the Jordan and Einstein frames are discussed and an apparent contradiction between static spherical solutions of scalar-tensor gravity and Hawking's theorem on Brans-Dicke black holes is clarified. The results are applied to metric and Palatini f(R) gravity.

The Lagrangian description of perfect fluids and modified gravity with an extra force

We revisit the issue of the correct Lagrangian description of a perfect fluid (pressure versus minus energy density) in relation with modified gravity theories in which galactic luminous matter couples nonminimally to the Ricci scalar. These Lagrangians are only equivalent when the fluid couples minimally to gravity and not otherwise; in the presence of nonminimal coupling they give rise to two distinct theories with different predictions.

Averaging inhomogeneities in scalar-tensor cosmology

The backreaction of inhomogeneities on the cosmic dynamics is studied in the context of scalar-tensor gravity. Due to terms of indefinite sign in the non-canonical effective energy tensor of the Brans-Dicke-like scalar field, extra contributions to the cosmic acceleration can arise. Brans-Dicke and metric f(R) gravity are presented as specific examples. Certain representation problems of the formalism peculiar to these theories are pointed out.
