Grammar as a Behavioral Biometric: Using Cognitively Motivated Grammar Models for Authorship Verification

Authorship Verification (AV) is a key area of research in digital text forensics, which addresses the fundamental question of whether two texts were written by the same person. Numerous computational approaches have been proposed over the last two decades in an attempt to address this challenge. However, existing AV methods often suffer from high complexity, low explainability and especially from a lack of clear scientific justification. We propose a simpler method based on modeling the grammar of an author following Cognitive Linguistics principles. These models are used to calculate $λ_G$ (LambdaG): the ratio of the likelihoods of a document given the candidate's grammar versus given a reference population's grammar. Our empirical evaluation, conducted on twelve datasets and compared against seven baseline methods, demonstrates that LambdaG achieves superior performance, including against several neural network-based AV methods. LambdaG is also robust to small variations in the composition of the reference population and provides interpretable visualizations, enhancing its explainability. We argue that its effectiveness is due to the method's compatibility with Cognitive Linguistics theories predicting that a person's grammar is a behavioral biometric.

Matching scalar leptoquarks to the SMEFT at one loop

In this paper we present the complete one-loop matching conditions, up to dimension-six operators of the Standard Model effective field theory, resulting by integrating out the two scalar leptoquarks $S_{1}$ and $S_{3}$. This allows a phenomenological study of low-energy constraints on this model at one-loop accuracy, which will be the focus of a subsequent work. Furthermore, it provides a rich comparison for functional and computational methods for one-loop matching, that are being developed. As a corollary result, we derive a complete set of dimension-six operators independent under integration by parts, but not under equations of motions, called Green's basis, as well as the complete reduction formulae from this set to the Warsaw basis.

New Physics Hints from Flavour

This Thesis presents my personal contributions to two distinct fields, namely the recent experimental anomalies in B-meson decays, and the longstanding quest for a theoretical explanation of lepton masses and mixings, under a unifying umbrella: Flavour Physics. The modern view of the Standard Model as an effective theory is motivated, and the dual role of flavour, as a probe of New Physics effects on one side, and as a piece of the puzzle itself on the other, is emphasized. By jointly discussing two physics cases of different nature, I attempt to offer a broader perspective on the current status of Beyond Standard Model searches. The discussion begins with a preliminary review of Standard Model Effective Field Theories, in which some utility results in theory matching are presented. The focus then moves to B-meson decay anomalies: after introducing Lepton Flavour Universality, we discuss the phenomenology of a specific Standard Model extension by scalar leptoquarks, and also present the Effective Field Theory framework of Rank-One Flavor Violation, providing a less detailed but broader picture for the case of neutral-current anomalies. Finally, we tackle the Standard Model flavour puzzle, describing an attempt to address charged lepton mass hierarchies in the framework of supersymmetric modular invariant models of lepton flavour.

Modular Invariant Dynamics and Fermion Mass Hierarchies around $τ= i$

We discuss fermion mass hierarchies within modular invariant flavour models. We analyse the neighbourhood of the self-dual point $τ=i$, where modular invariant theories possess a residual $Z_4$ invariance. In this region the breaking of $Z_4$ can be fully described by the spurion $ε\approx τ- i$, that flips its sign under $Z_4$. Degeneracies or vanishing eigenvalues of fermion mass matrices, forced by the $Z_4$ symmetry at $τ=i$, are removed by slightly deviating from the self-dual point. Relevant mass ratios are controlled by powers of $|ε|$. We present examples where this mechanism is a key ingredient to successfully implement an hierarchical spectrum in the lepton sector, even in the presence of a non-minimal Kähler potential.

Low-energy phenomenology of scalar leptoquarks at one-loop accuracy

We perform a complete study of the low-energy phenomenology of $S_1$ and $S_3$ lepto-quarks, aimed at addressing the observed deviations in $B$-meson decays and the muon magnetic dipole moment. Leptoquark contributions to observables are computed at one-loop accuracy in an effective field theory approach, using the recently published complete one-loop matching of these leptoquarks to the Standard Model effective field theory. We present several scenarios, discussing in each case the preferred parameter space and the most relevant observables.

Rank-One Flavor Violation and B-meson anomalies

We assume that the quark-flavor coefficients matrix of the semileptonic operators addressing the neutral-current B-meson anomalies has rank-one, i.e. it can be described by a single vector in quark-flavor space. By correlating the observed anomalies to other flavor and high-$p_T$ observables, we constrain its possible directions and we show that a large region of the parameter space of this framework will be explored by flavor data from the NA62, KOTO, LHCb and Belle II experiments.
