Optimal skyrmion stability in antisymmetric ultrathin ferromagnetic bilayers

We demonstrate the stray-field-mediated skyrmion stabilizing capabilities of ultrathin exchange-decoupled antisymmetric ferromagnetic bilayers based on conventional transition metal materials. Using an asymptotically exact micromagnetic model valid in the ultrathin film limit, we show that the antisymmetric tailoring of the bilayer allows the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the dipolar interaction to act synergistically to stabilize skyrmions, in contrast to the monolayer case, in which these energies compete. To obtain optimal stability of these skyrmions against collapse and bursting -- the two fundamental processes determining skyrmion lifetime, we carry out an asymptotic analysis of the saddle point solution that separates the skyrmion from the demagnetized state. The result is an optimal stability line for compact skyrmions in the non-dimensional parameter space of the effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strength and the effective film thickness. Our predictions are confirmed by extensive micromagnetic simulations of antisymmetric bilayers, using magnetic parameters of the conventional Pt/Co/AlO$_x$ systems. Our results provide a new pathway for experimental observations of 10 nm radius zero-field skyrmions with lifetimes compatible with information technology applications.

Existence of higher degree minimizers in the magnetic skyrmion problem

We demonstrate existence of topologically nontrivial energy minimizing maps of a given positive degree from bounded domains in the plane to $\mathbb S^2$ in a variational model describing magnetizations in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our strategy is to insert tiny truncated Belavin-Polyakov profiles in carefully chosen locations of lower degree objects such that the total energy increase lies strictly below the expected Dirichlet energy contribution, ruling out loss of degree in the limits of minimizing sequences. The argument requires that the domain be either sufficiently large or sufficiently slender to accommodate a prescribed degree. We also show that these higher degree minimizers concentrate on point-like skyrmionic configurations in a suitable parameter regime.

Asymptotically exact formulas for the stripe domains period in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with out-of-plane anisotropy

We derive asymptotically exact formulas for the equilibrium magnetic stripe period in ultrathin films with out-of-plane anisotropy that include the full domain wall magnetic dipolar energy. Starting with the reduced two-dimensional micromagnetic model valid for thin films, we obtain the leading order approximation for the energy per unit volume in the vanishing film thickness limit in the case of Bloch and Néel wall rotations. Its minimization in the stripe period leads to an analytical expression for the equilibrium period with a prefactor proportional to the Bloch wall width. The constant in the prefactor, related to the long-range dipolar interactions, is carefully evaluated. This results in a remarkable agreement of the stripe domain energy density and stripe period predicted by our analytical formulas with micromagnetic simulations. Our formula can be used to accurately deduce magnetic parameters from the experimental measurements of the stripe period and to systematically predict the equilibrium stripe periods in ultrathin films.

Magnetic skyrmions under confinement

We present a variational treatment of confined magnetic skyrmions in a minimal micromagnetic model of ultrathin ferromagnetic films with interfacial Dzylashinksii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in competition with the exchange energy, with a possible addition of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions that are motivated by the asymptotic treatment of the stray field energy in the thin film limit we prove existence of topologically non-trivial energy minimizers that concentrate on points in the domain as the DMI strength parameter tends to zero. Furthermore, we derive the leading order non-trivial term in the $Γ$-expansion of the energy in the limit of vanishing DMI strength that allows us to completely characterize the limiting magnetization profiles and interpret them as particle-like states whose radius and position are determined by minimizing a renormalized energy functional. In particular, we show that in our setting the skyrmions are strongly repelled from the domain boundaries, which imparts them with stability that is highly desirable for applications. We provide explicit calculations of the renormalized energy for a number of basic domain geometries.

A micromagnetic theory of skyrmion lifetime in ultrathin ferromagnetic films

We use the continuum micromagnetic framework to derive the formulas for compact skyrmion lifetime due to thermal noise in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with relatively weak interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the absence of a saddle point connecting the skyrmion solution to the ferromagnetic state, we interpret the skyrmion collapse event as ``capture by an absorber'' at microscale. This yields an explicit Arrhenius collapse rate with both the barrier height and the prefactor as functions of all the material parameters, as well as the dynamical paths to collapse.

Variational principles of micromagnetics revisited

We revisit the basic variational formulation of the minimization problem associated with the micromagnetic energy, with an emphasis on the treatment of the stray field contribution to the energy, which is intrinsically non-local. Under minimal assumptions, we establish three distinct variational principles for the stray field energy: a minimax principle involving magnetic scalar potential and two minimization principles involving magnetic vector potential. We then apply our formulations to the dimension reduction problem for thin ferromagnetic shells of arbitrary shapes.

Walker solution for Dzyaloshinskii domain wall in ultrathin ferromagnetic films

We analyze the electric current and magnetic field driven domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin ferromagnetic films in the presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and both out-of-plane and in-plane uniaxial anisotropies. We obtain exact analytical Walker-type solutions in the form of one-dimensional domain walls moving with constant velocity due to both spin-transfer torques and out-of-plane magnetic field. These solutions are embedded into a larger family of propagating solutions found numerically. Within the considered model, we find the dependencies of the domain wall velocity on the material parameters and demonstrate that adding in-plane anisotropy may produce domain walls moving with velocities in excess of 500 m/s in realistic materials under moderate fields and currents.

Edge domain walls in ultrathin exchange-biased films

We present an analysis of edge domain walls in exchange-biased ferromagnetic films appearing as a result of a competition between the stray field at the film edges and the exchange bias field in the bulk. We introduce an effective two-dimensional micromagnetic energy that governs the magnetization behavior in exchange-biased materials and investigate its energy minimizers in the strip geometry. In a periodic setting, we provide a complete characterization of global energy minimizers corresponding to edge domain walls. In particular, we show that energy minimizers are one-dimensional and do not exhibit winding. We then consider a particular thin film regime for large samples and relatively strong exchange bias and derive a simple and comprehensive algebraic model describing the limiting magnetization behavior in the interior and at the boundary of the sample. Finally, we demonstrate that the asymptotic results obtained in the periodic setting remain true in the case of finite rectangular samples.

One-dimensional in-plane edge domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic films

We study existence and properties of one-dimensional edge domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy. In these materials, the magnetization vector is constrained to lie entirely in the film plane, with the preferred directions dictated by the magnetocrystalline easy axis. We consider magnetization profiles in the vicinity of a straight film edge oriented at an arbitrary angle with respect to the easy axis. To minimize the micromagnetic energy, these profiles form transition layers in which the magnetization vector rotates away from the direction of the easy axis to align with the film edge. We prove existence of edge domain walls as minimizers of the appropriate one-dimensional micromagnetic energy functional and show that they are classical solutions of the associated Euler-Lagrange equation with Dirichlet boundary condition at the edge. We also perform a numerical study of these one-dimensional domain walls and uncover further properties of these domain wall profiles.

Theory of Dzyaloshinskii domain wall tilt in ferromagnetic nanostrips

We present an analytical theory of domain wall tilt due to a transverse in-plane magnetic field in a ferromagnetic nanostrip with out-of-plane anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The theory treats the domain walls as one-dimensional objects with orientation-dependent energy, which interact with the sample edges. We show that under an applied field the domain wall remains straight, but tilts at an angle to the direction of the magnetic field that is proportional to the field strength for moderate fields and sufficiently strong DMI. Furthermore, we obtain a nonlinear dependence of the tilt angle on the applied field at weaker DMI. Our analytical results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations.

Domain structure of ultrathin ferromagnetic elements in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Recent advances in nanofabrication make it possible to produce multilayer nanostructures composed of ultrathin film materials with thickness down to a few monolayers of atoms and lateral extent of several tens of nanometers. At these scales, ferromagnetic materials begin to exhibit unusual properties, such as perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy and antisymmetric exchange, also referred to as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), because of the increased importance of interfacial effects. The presence of surface DMI has been demonstrated to fundamentally alter the structure of domain walls. Here we use the micromagnetic modeling framework to analyse the existence and structure of chiral domain walls, viewed as minimizers of a suitable micromagnetic energy functional. We explicitly construct the minimizers in the one-dimensional setting, both for the interior and edge walls, for a broad range of parameters. We then use the methods of {$Γ$}-convergence to analyze the asymptotics of the two-dimensional mag- netization patterns in samples of large spatial extent in the presence of weak applied magnetic fields.
