On the Partonometry of V(=gamma,W,Z)+jet Events at Hadron Colliders

Significant colour interference effects are expected in V(=gamma,W,Z)+jet production at hadron colliders. These directly influence the hadronic antenna patterns and can provide a valuable diagnostic tool for probing the nature of the underlying parton subprocesses. Motivated by these ideas, we present quantitative predictions for the distributions of soft particles and jets in W+jet production at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider.

Hadronic Antenna Patterns to Distinguish Production Mechanisms for Large-E_T Jets

Hadronic antenna patterns provide a tool able to diagnose different patterns of colour flow in large-E_T jet events. They reflect the underlying short-distance dynamics, and are sensitive to colour coherence and interference between the initial- and final-state partons. We discuss how hadronic antenna patterns may be used on large-E_T events from the Fermilab Tevatron or the CERN LHC to distinguish between conventional QCD and new physics production mechanisms such as a possible Z' boson or compositeness.

QED Interconnection Effects on W Momentum Distributions at LEP 2

The process $\ee \to \W^+\W^- \to \f_1 \fbar_2 \, \f_3 \fbar_4$ contains charges in the initial, intermediate and final stages. This gives a rich selection of possible QED interconnection effects. Coulomb interaction is the simplest of these, and can thus be used to explore consequences. We study a number of experimental observables, with emphasis on those related to the W momentum distribution. Second-order Coulomb effects are shown to be practically negligible. The limited LEP~2 statistics will not allow detailed tests, so any theory uncertainty will be reflected in the systematic error on the W mass. Currently the uncertainty from this source may be as high as 20~MeV.

Chromo- and Electrodynamics of Heavy Unstable Particle

In this talk I attempt to survey some selected physics issues on radiative interference phenomena in the production of heavy unstable particles. A special emphasis is placed on the reactions $e^+e^- \rightarrow W^+W^- \rightarrow 4$ jets and $e^+e^- \rightarrow t\bar{t} \rightarrow bW^+\bar{b}W^-$. A transparent recipe is given for quantifying the level of suppression of the interference effects in the inclusive production processes. The influence of the $W$ width on the Coulomb corrections to the threshold $W^+W^-$ production is briefly addressed.

Colour Correlations and Multiplicities in Top Events

In events of the type e+ e- -> t tbar -> b W+ bbar W-, particle production could depend in a non-trivial way on the kinematics of the process. Energetic perturbative gluon radiation can be generated (when kinematically allowed) by the original t tbar system and by the t -> b W+ and tbar -> bbar W- decays, with negligible interference between the production and decay stages and between the t and tbar decays. Soft perturbative gluon emission and non-perturbative fragmentation does introduce a correlation, however. To illustrate the size of these effects, we study the multiplicity as a function of the angle between the b and bbar jets, close to the t tbar threshold. Also potential uncertainties in top mass determinations are briefly addressed.

Does the W Mass Reconstruction Survive QCD Effects?

In the hadronic decay mode of a pair of W bosons, $\text{e}~+\text{e}~- \to \text{W}~+ \text{W}~- \to \text{q}_1 \overline{\text{q}}_2 \text{q}_3 \overline{\text{q}}_4$, QCD interference effects can mix up the two colour singlets $\text{q}_1 \overline{\text{q}}_2$ and $\text{q}_3 \overline{\text{q}}_4$, i.e. produce hadrons that cannot be uniquely assigned to either of W$~+$ and W$~-$. We show that interference is negligible for energetic perturbative gluon emission, and develop models to help us to estimate the non-perturbative effects. The total contribution to the systematic error on the W mass reconstruction may be as large as 40 MeV.

QED-Induced Rapidity-Gap Events at the Z Peak

We study rapidity-gap events in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at the Z boson peak initiated by the emission of a virtual photon. This mechanism is suppressed by the QED coupling constant, but it is enhanced due to a large propagator term from the virtual photon. For typical kinematics, we find a smaller event rate than analogous QCD type gap events. In the small jet-pair invariant mass limit, the QED type events follow a $1+\cos^2θ$ distribution in the jet-pair scattering angle, instead of the $\sin^2θ$ distribution of the QCD case.
