Quantitative multiscale operator-type approximations for asymptotically degenerating spectral problems

We study an abstract family of asymptotically degenerating variational problems. Those are natural generalisations of families of problems emerging upon application of a rescaled Floquet-Bloch-Gelfand transform to resolvent problems for high-contrast elliptic PDEs with highly oscillatory periodic coefficients. An asymptotic analysis of these models leads us to a hierarchy of approximation results with uniform operator-type error estimates under various assumptions, satisfied by specific examples. We provide approximations for the resolvents in terms of a certain `bivariate' operator which appears an abstract generalisation of the two-scale limit operators for highly oscillatory high-contrast PDEs. The resulting approximating self-adjoint operator, providing tight operator error estimates, is the bivariate operator sandwiched by a connecting operator which for a broad class of periodic problems specialises to a new two-scale version of the classical Whittaker-Shannon interpolation. An explicit description of the limit spectrum in the abstract setting is provided, and new tight error estimates on the distance between the original and limit spectra are established. Our generic approach allows us to readily consider a wide class of asymptotically degenerating problems including but also going beyond high-contrast highly oscillatory PDEs. The obtained results are illustrated by various examples.

High-frequency bounds for the Helmholtz equation under parabolic trapping and applications in numerical analysis

This paper is concerned with resolvent estimates on the real axis for the Helmholtz equation posed in the exterior of a bounded obstacle with Dirichlet boundary conditions when the obstacle is trapping. There are two resolvent estimates for this situation currently in the literature: (i) in the case of elliptic trapping the general "worst case" bound of exponential growth applies, and examples show that this growth can be realised through some sequence of wavenumbers, (ii) in the prototypical case of hyperbolic trapping where the Helmholtz equation is posed in the exterior of two strictly convex obstacles (or several obstacles with additional constraints) the nontrapping resolvent estimate holds with a logarithmic loss. This paper proves the first resolvent estimate for parabolic trapping by obstacles, studying a class of obstacles the prototypical example of which is the exterior of two squares (in 2-d), or two cubes (in 3-d), whose sides are parallel. We show, via developments of the vector-field/multiplier argument of Morawetz and the first application of this methodology to trapping configurations, that a resolvent estimate holds with a polynomial loss over the nontrapping estimate. We use this bound, along with the other trapping resolvent estimates, to prove results about integral-equation formulations of the boundary value problem in the case of trapping. Feeding these bounds into existing frameworks for analysing finite and boundary element methods, we obtain the first wavenumber-explicit proofs of convergence for numerical methods for solving the Helmholtz equation in the exterior of a trapping obstacle.

Contour integral solutions of the parabolic wave equation

We present a simple systematic construction and analysis of solutions of the two-dimensional parabolic wave equation that exhibit far-field localisation near a given algebraic plane curve. Our solutions are complex contour integral superpositions of elementary plane wave solutions with polynomial phase, the desired localisation being associated with the coalescence of saddle points. Our solutions provide a unified framework in which to describe some classical phenomena in two-dimensional high frequency wave propagation, including smooth and cusped caustics, whispering gallery and creeping waves, and tangent ray diffraction by a smooth boundary. We also study a subclass of solutions exhibiting localisation near a cubic parabola, and discuss their possible relevance to the study of the canonical inflection point problem governing the transition from whispering gallery waves to creeping waves.

Homogenization of spectral problems in bounded domains with doubly high contrasts

Homogenization of a spectral problem in a bounded domain with a high contrast in both stiffness and density is considered. For a special critical scaling, two-scale asymptotic expansions for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are constructed. Two-scale limit equations are derived and relate to certain non-standard self-adjoint operators. In particular they explicitly display the first two terms in the asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues, with a surprising bound for the error of order ε^{5/4} proved.
