Using NV centers in diamond to detect DC to very-low frequency magnetic fields

In this work we present a compact and portable tabletop magnetometer that utilizes negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The magnetometer is operated using a dual microwave resonance detection approach in combination with an optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique (mitigating drifts in results due to changes of the diamond temperature), capable of simultaneously exciting and registering two ODMR transitions. The experimentally measured magnetic field noise-floor is $\approx 2.3~\textrm{nT}\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ while the calculated shot-noise-limited magnetic field sensitivity is $\approx 585~\textrm{pT}\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$ when excited with a continuous wave laser at 0.5~W. These results pave the way for realizing a simple set-up magnetometer for precise single axis magnetic field measurements for example for accurate electric current measurements for stabilization purposes and magnetic communication applications.

CIRCUS: an autonomous control system for antimatter, atomic and quantum physics experiments

A powerful and robust control system is a crucial, often neglected, pillar of any modern, complex physics experiment that requires the management of a multitude of different devices and their precise time synchronisation. The AEgIS collaboration presents CIRCUS, a novel, autonomous control system optimised for time-critical experiments such as those at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator and, more broadly, in atomic and quantum physics research. Its setup is based on Sinara/ARTIQ and TALOS, integrating the ALPACA analysis pipeline, the last two developed entirely in AEgIS. It is suitable for strict synchronicity requirements and repeatable, automated operation of experiments, culminating in autonomous parameter optimisation via feedback from real-time data analysis. CIRCUS has been successfully deployed and tested in AEgIS; being experiment-agnostic and released open-source, other experiments can leverage its capabilities.

Observation and modelling of bound-free transitions to the $X^1Σ^+$ and $a^3Σ^+$ states of KCs

The oscillation continuum in laser-induced fluorescence spectra of bound-free $c^3Σ^+ \to a^3Σ^+$ and (4)$^1Σ^+ \to X^1Σ^+$ transitions of the KCs molecule were recorded by Fourier-transform spectrometer and modelled under the adiabatic approximation. The required interatomic potentials for ground $a^3Σ^+$ and $X^1Σ^+$ states were reconstructed in an analytical Chebishev-polynomial-expansion form in the framework of the regularization direct-potential-fit procedure based on the simultaneous consideration of experimental line positions from [R. Ferber et al, Phys. Rev. A, \textbf{80}, 062501 (2009)] and the present \emph{ab initio} calculation of short-range repulsive potential data. It was proved that the repulsive part over dissociation limit of the derived $a^3Σ^+$ potential reproduces the experiment better than the potentials reported in literature. It is also shown that all empirical and semi-empirical potentials available for the $X^1Σ^+$ state reproduce the bound-free (4)$^1Σ^+ \to X^1Σ^+$ spectrum with equal quality in the range of observations.

Fourier-transform spectroscopy and relativistic electronic structure calculation on the $c^3\Sigma^+$ state of KCs

The Ti:Saphire laser operated within 13800 - 11800 cm$^{-1}$ range was used to excite the $c^3\Sigma^+$ state of KCs molecule directly from the ground $X^1\Sigma^+$ state. The laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra of the $c^3\Sigma^+ \rightarrow a^3\Sigma^+$ transition were recorded with Fourier-transform spectrometer within 8000 to 10000 cm$^{-1}$ range. Overall 673 rovibronic term values belonging to both $e/f$-components of the $c^3\Sigma^+(\Omega=1^{\pm})$ state of $^{39}$KCs, covering vibrational levels from $v$ = 0 to about 45, and rotational levels $J\in [11,149]$ were determined with the accuracy of about 0.01 cm$^{-1}$; among them 7 values for $^{41}$KCs. The experimental term values with $v\in [0,22]$ were involved in a direct point-wise potential reconstruction for the $c^3\Sigma^+(\Omega=1^{\pm})$ state, which takes into account the $\Omega$-doubling effect caused by the spin-rotational interaction with the nearby $c^3\Sigma^+(\Omega=0^-)$ state. The analysis and interpretation were facilitated by the fully-relativistic coupled cluster calculation of the potential energy curves for the $B^1\Pi$, $c^3\Sigma^+$, and $b^3\Pi$ states, as well as of spin-forbidden $c-X$ and spin-allowed $c-a$ transition dipole moments; radiative lifetimes and vibronic branching ratios were calculated. A comparison of relative intensity distributions measured in vibrational $c-a$ LIF progressions with their theoretical counterparts unambiguously confirms the vibrational assignment suggested in [\emph{J. Szczepkovski, et. al.}, JQSRT, \textbf{204}, 133-137 (2018)].

The branching ratio of intercombination $A^1Σ^+\sim b^3Π\to a^3Σ^+/X^1Σ^+$ transitions in the RbCs molecule: measurements and calculations

We observed the $A^1Σ^+\sim b^3Π\to a^3Σ^+/X^1Σ^+$ laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra of the RbCs molecule excited from the ground $X^1Σ^+$ state by the Ti:Sapphire laser. The LIF radiation from the common perturbed levels of the singlet-triplet $A\sim b$ complex was recorded by the Fourier-transform (FT) spectrometer with the instrumental resolution of 0.03~cm$^{-1}$. The relative intensity distribution in the rotationally resolved $A\sim b\to a^3Σ^+(v_a)/X^1Σ^+(v_X)$ progressions was measured, and their branching ratio was found to be about of 1$÷$5$ \times$10$^{-4}$ in the bound region of the $a^3Σ^+$ and $X^1Σ^+$ states. The experiment was complemented with the scalar and full relativistic calculations of the $A/b - X/a$ transition dipole moments (TDMs) as functions of internuclear distance. The relative systematic error in the resulting \emph{ab initio} TDM functions evaluated for the strong $A - X$ transition was estimated as few percent in the energy region, where the experimental LIF intensities are relevant. The relative spectral sensitivity of the FT registration system, operated with the InGaAs diode detector and CaF beam-splitter, was calibrated in the range $[6~500,12~000]$~cm$^{-1}$ by a comparison of experimental intensities in the long $A\sim b\to X(v_X)$ LIF progressions of the K$_2$ and KCs molecules with their theoretical counterparts evaluated using the \emph{ab initio} $A - X$ TDMs. Both experimental and theoretical transition probabilities can be employed to improve the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process, $a\to A\sim b \to X$, which is exploited for a laser assembling of ultracold RbCs molecules.
