Finite-time blow-up for the four-dimensional mass-critical quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger system without mass resonance

We study the focusing quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger system \[ \begin{cases} i\partial_t u+Δu=-2v\overline{u}, \\ i\partial_t v+κΔv=-u^2, \end{cases} \qquad (t,x)\in I\times\mathbb R^4, \] where $κ>0$. In the non-mass-resonant case $κ\neq \frac12$, previous works of Inui--Kishimoto--Nishimura and Dinh--Forcella showed that radial solutions with negative energy must either blow up in finite time or exist globally while their $H^1$-norm grows without bound. In this paper, we prove that every radial $H^1\times H^1$ solution with negative energy blows up in finite time, both forward and backward in time. No finite-variance assumption is required. The main ingredient is a localized virial argument based on the bounded exponential weight \[ \nablaϕ_R(x)=2x e^{-|x|^2/R^2}. \] A radial weighted interpolation estimate allows us to control the nonlinear error terms by the corresponding weighted kinetic term, up to an $O(R^{-2})$ error depending only on the conserved mass. Moreover, the localized virial quantity itself can be bounded directly in terms of the same weighted kinetic defect. Combining these estimates yields a superlinear Riccati-type differential inequality, which cannot persist for all time and therefore forces finite-time blow-up.

Statistical mechanics of the radial focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in general traps

In this paper, we investigate the Gibbs measures associated with the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an anharmonic potential. We establish a dichotomy for normalizability and non-normalizability of the Gibbs measures in one dimension and higher dimensions with radial data. This extends a recent result of the third and fourth authors with Robert and Seong (2022), where the focusing Gibbs measures with a harmonic potential were addressed. Notably, in the case of a subharmonic potential, we identify a novel critical nonlinearity (below the usual mass-critical exponent) for which the Gibbs measures exhibit a phase transition. The primary challenge emerges from the limited understanding of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger operator with an anharmonic potential. We overcome the difficulty by employing techniques related to a recent work of the first two authors (2022).

Scattering for non-radial 3D NLS with combined nonlinearities: the interaction Morawetz approach

We give a new proof of the scattering below the ground state energy level for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) with mass-energy intercritical competing nonlinearities. Specifically, the NLS has a focusing leading order nonlinearity with a defocusing perturbation. Our strategy combines interaction Morawetz estimates à la Dodson-Murphy and a new crucial bound for the Pohozaev functional of localized functions, which is essential to overcome the lack of a monotonicity condition. Furthermore, we give the rate of blow-up for symmetric solutions.

A system of inhomogeneous NLS arising in optical media with a $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity, part I : Dynamics

We study a system of inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equations that emerge in optical media with a $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. This nonlinearity, whose local strength is subject to a cusp-shaped spatial modulation, $χ^{(2)}\sim |x|^{-α}$ where $α> 0$, can be induced by spatially non-uniform poling. Our first step is to establish a vectorial Gagliardo--Nirenberg type inequality related to the system. This allows us to identify the necessary conditions on the initial data that lead to the existence of global in time solutions. By exploiting the spatial decay at infinity of the nonlinearity, we demonstrate the non-radial energy scattering in the mass-supercritical regime for global solutions. These solutions have initial data that lie below a mass-energy threshold, regardless of whether the system is mass-resonant or non-mass resonant. Lastly, we provide the criteria for the existence of non-radial blow-up solutions with mass-critical and mass-supercritical nonlinearities in both mass and non-mass resonance cases.

Invariant Gibbs measures for 1D NLS in a trap

We consider the one dimensional cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with trapping potential behaving like |x| s (s > 1) at infinity. We construct Gibbs measures associated to the equation and prove that the Cauchy problem is globally well-posed almost surely on their support. Consequently, the Gibbs measure is indeed invariant under the flow of the equation. We also address the construction and invariance of canonical Gibbs measures, conditioned on the L 2 mass.

Energy scattering for a class of inhomogeneous biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger equations in low dimensions

We consider a class of biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a focusing inhomogeneous power-type nonlinearity \[ i\partial_t u -Δ^2 u+μΔu +|x|^{-b} |u|^αu=0, \quad \left. u\right|_{t=0}=u_0 \in H^2(\mathbb{R}^d) \] with $d\geq 1, μ\geq 0$, $0 0$, and $α<\frac{8-2b}{d-4}$ if $d\geq 5$. We first determine a region in which solutions to the equation exist globally in time. We then show that these global-in-time solutions scatter in $H^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ in three and higher dimensions. In the case of no harmonic perturbation, i.e., $μ=0$, our result extends the energy scattering proved by Saanouni [Calc. Var. 60 (2021), art. no. 113] and Campos and Guzmán [Calc. Var. 61 (2022), art. no. 156] to three and four dimensions. Our energy scattering is new in the presence of a repulsive harmonic perturbation $μ>0$. The proofs rely on estimates in Lorentz spaces which are properly suited for handling the weight $|x|^{-b}$.

Blow-up of 2D attractive Bose-Einstein condensates at the crittical rotational speed

We study the ground states of a 2D focusing non-linear Schrödinger equation with rotation and harmonic trapping. When the strength of the interaction approaches a critical value from below, the system collapses to a profile obtained from the optimizer of a Gagliardo--Nirenberg interpolation inequality. This was established before in the case of fixed rotation frequency. We extend the result to rotation frequencies approaching, or even equal to, the critical frequency at which the centrifugal force compensates the trap. We prove that the blow-up scenario is to leading order unaffected by such a strong deconfinement mechanism. In particular the blow-up profile remains independent of the rotation frequency.

Existence and stability of standing waves for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a critical rotational speed

We study the existence and stability of standing waves associated to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a critical rotational speed and an axially symmetric harmonic potential. This equation arises as an effective model describing the attractive Bose-Einstein condensation in a magnetic trap rotating with an angular velocity. By viewing the equation as NLS with a constant magnetic field and with (or without) a partial harmonic confinement, we establish the existence and orbital stability of prescribed mass standing waves for the equation with mass-subcritical, mass-critical, and mass-supercritical nonlinearities. Our result extends a recent work of [Bellazzini-Boussaïd-Jeanjean-Visciglia, Comm. Math. Phys. 353 (2017), no. 1, 229-251], where the existence and stability of standing waves for the supercritical NLS with a partial confinement were established.

The 3D nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant magnetic field revisited

In this paper, we revisit the Cauchy problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant magnetic field. We first establish sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of global in time and finite time blow-up solutions. In particular, we derive sharp thresholds for global existence versus blow-up for the equation with mass-critical and mass-supercritical nonlinearities. We next prove the existence and orbital stability of normalized standing waves which extend the previous known results to the mass-critical and mass-supercritical cases. To show the existence of normalized solitary waves, we present a new approach that avoids the celebrated concentration-compactness principle. Finally, we study the existence and strong instability of ground state standing waves which greatly improve the previous literature.

Long time dynamics and blow-up for the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation with spatial growing nonlinearity

We investigate the Cauchy problem for the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i \partial_t u + Δu = - |x|^b |u|^{p-1} u$ in the radial Sobolev space $H^1_{\text{rad}}(\mathbb{R}^N)$, where $b>0$ and $p>1$. We show the global existence and energy scattering in the inter-critical regime, i.e., $p>\frac{N+4+2b}{N}$ and $p<\frac{N+2+2b}{N-2}$ if $N\geq 3$. We also obtain blowing-up solutions for the mass-critical and mass-supercritical nonlinearities. The main difficulty, coming from the spatial growing nonlinearity, is overcome by refined Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequalities. Our proofs are based on improved Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, the Morawetz-Sobolev approach of Dodson and Murphy, radial Sobolev embeddings, and localized virial estimates.

Blow-up results for systems of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with quadratic interaction

We establish blow-up results for systems of NLS equations with quadratic interaction in anisotropic spaces. We precisely show finite time blow-up or grow-up for cylindrical symmetric solutions. With our construction, we moreover prove some polynomial lower bounds on the kinetic energy of global solutions in the mass-critical case, which in turn implies grow-up along any diverging time sequence. Our analysis extends to general NLS systems with quadratic interactions, and it also provides improvements of known results in the radial case.

Mass-Energy threshold dynamics for dipolar Quantum Gases

We consider a Gross-Pitaevskii equation which appears as a model in the description of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, without a confining external trapping potential. We describe the asymptotic dynamics of solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem in the energy space in different configurations with respect to the mass-energy threshold, namely for initial data above and at the mass-energy threshold. We first establish a scattering criterion for the equation that we prove by means of the concentration/compactness and rigidity scheme. This criterion enables us to show the energy scattering for solutions with data above the mass-energy threshold, for which only blow-up was known. We also prove a blow-up/grow-up criterion for the equation with general data in the energy space. As a byproduct of scattering and blow-up criteria, and the compactness of minimizing sequences for the Gagliardo-Nirenberg's inequality, we study long time dynamics of solutions with data lying exactly at the mass-energy threshold.

Sharp conditions for scattering and blow-up for a system of NLS arising in optical materials with $χ^3$ nonlinear response

We study the asymptotic dynamics for solutions to a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with cubic interactions, arising in nonlinear optics. We provide sharp threshold criteria leading to global well-posedness and scattering of solutions, as well as formation of singularities in finite time for (anisotropic) symmetric initial data. The free asymptotic results are proved by means of Morawetz and interaction Morawetz estimates. The blow-up results are shown by combining variational analysis and an ODE argument, which overcomes the unavailability of the convexity argument based on virial-type identities.

Long time dynamics of non-radial solutions to inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We study long time dynamics of non-radial solutions to the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By using the concentration/compactness and rigidity method, we establish a scattering criterion for non-radial solutions to the equation. We also prove a non-radial blow-up criterion for the equation whose proof makes use of localized virial estimates. As a byproduct of these criteria, we study long time dynamics of non-radial solutions to the equation with data lying below, at, and above the ground state threshold. In addition, we provide a new argument showing the existence of finite time blow-up solution to the equation with cylindrically symmetric data. The ideas developed in this paper are robust and can be applicable to other types of nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

On stability of rotational 2D binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a two-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation proposed in Physics to model rotational binary Bose-Einstein condensates. The nonlinearity is a logarithmic modification of the usual cubic nonlinearity. The presence of both the external confining potential and rotating frame makes it difficult to apply standard techniques to directly construct ground states, as we explain in an appendix. The goal of the present paper is to analyze the orbital stability of the set of energy minimizers under mass constraint, according to the relative strength of the confining potential compared to the angular frequency. The main novelty concerns the critical case (lowest Landau Level) where these two effects compensate exactly, and orbital stability is established by using techniques related to magnetic Schr{ö}dinger operators.

Non-radial scattering theory for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with potential

We consider a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with potential \[ i\partial_t u +Δu - Vu = \pm |u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^3, \] where $\frac{4}{3}<α<4$ and $V$ is a Kato-type potential. We establish a scattering criterion for the equation with non-radial initial data using the ideas of Dodson-Murphy [Math. Res. Lett. 25(6):1805--1825]. As a consequence, we prove the energy scattering for the focusing problem with data below the ground state threshold. Our result extends the recent works of Hong [Commun. Pure Appl. Anal. 15(5):1571--1601] and Hamano-Ikeda [J. Evol. Equ. 2019]. We also study long time dynamics of global solutions to the focusing problem with data at the ground state threshold.

Dynamics of radial solutions for the focusing fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We consider the following class of focusing $L^2$-supercritical fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations \[ i\partial_t u - Δ^2 u + μΔu = - |u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N, \] where $N\geq 2$, $μ\geq 0$, and $\frac{8}{N}<α<α^*$ with $α^*:=\frac{8}{N-4}$ if $N\geq 5$ and $α^*=\infty$ if $N\leq 4$. By using the localized Morawetz estimates and radial Sobolev embedding, we establish the energy scattering below the ground state threshold for the equation with radially symmetric initial data. We also address the existence of finite time blow-up radial solutions to the equation. In particular, we show a sharp threshold for scattering and blow-up for the equation with radial data. Our scattering result not only extends the one proved by Guo \cite{Guo}, where the scattering was proven for $μ= 0$, but also provides an alternative simple proof that completely avoids the use of the concentration/compactness and rigidity argument. In the case $μ> 0$, our blow-up result extends an earlier result proved by Boulenger-Lenzmann \cite{BL}, where the finite time blow-up was shown for initial data with negative energy.

Random data theory for the cubic fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the cubic nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u - Δ^2 u + μΔu = \pm |u|^2 u, \quad μ\geq 0 \] on $\mathbb{R}^N, N \geq 5$ with random initial data. We prove almost sure local well-posedness below the scaling critical regularity. We also prove probabilistic small data global well-posedness and scattering. Finally, we prove the global well-posedness and scattering with a large probability for initial data randomized on dilated cubes.
