First determination of vector and tensor couplings from polarized $πΔ$ photoproduction

The couplings between hadrons encode the dynamics of quantum chromodynamics. While many couplings can be calculated from decay widths, in some cases the decays are kinematically forbidden and hence are not directly accessible. We use a Regge framework to determine these couplings from high-energy polarized scattering processes. We apply this to the $πΔ$ photoproduction that was recently studied at GlueX and provide the first determination of the complete set of $NΔ$ couplings to $ρ$, $b_1$, and $a_2$.

Scattering off unstable states

Unstable states that live long enough may appear as in(out)going particles in scattering experiments. Yet, the standard QFT approach strictly applies only to fully stable asymptotic states. This is evident when scattering involving unstable particles develops a $t$-channel singularity at specific angles. We employ a finite-time formalism leading to analytic results without the singularity (even in the infinite-time limit), thus solving the problem at a phenomenological level. In turn, the approach also justifies treating long-lived particles, like weakly decaying pions, as stable during strong interactions.

Mechanisms of high energy polarized photoproduction of $π^{-}Δ^{++}$

We present an amplitude analysis of high-energy polarized photoproduction of $π^-Δ^{++}$ within a Regge exchange framework. A Regge amplitude model incorporating $π$, $ρ$, $b_1$, and $a_2$ trajectory exchanges is fit simultaneously to spin density matrix elements measured by the GlueX experiment at photon energies of $E_γ= 8.2$--$8.8$ GeV and differential cross section data from SLAC. By including SDME data, the fit constrains not only the magnitudes but also the relative phases of the helicity amplitudes. The results confirm the dominance of pion exchange at small momentum transfer, while natural parity exchanges become significant at larger $t$. We analytically continue the $s$-channel amplitude to the $t$-channel, taking care of the kinematical singularities, and isolate the dynamical residues at the meson poles. The extracted $πNΔ$ coupling constant is found to be consistent with the value obtained from the decay width of the $Δ(1232)$. For the $ρNΔ$, $b_1 NΔ$, and $a_2 NΔ$ vertices, first extractions of the relevant coupling constants are provided.

High-energy $η^{(\prime)}π$ photoproduction and the nature of exotic waves

The observation of hybrid mesons in photoproduction experiments can provide essential insight into the inner workings of quantum chromodynamics in the strong coupling regime. In particular, the study of final $η^{(\prime)}π$ states is of great interest due to the presence of the lowest lying hybrid candidate with manifestly exotic quantum numbers, the $π_1(1600)$. In this work, a double-vector exchange model with Reggeized $ρ$ and $ω$ trajectories is developed to describe the photoproduction of $η^{(\prime)}π$ in the high-mass region. Results are presented for the differential cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries in the energy region of interest to the GlueX experiment. The model contains no free parameters, and reproduces the magnitude and $t$-dependence of existing CLAS data at $E_γ=5$\gev. The model predicts a stronger asymmetry in the $η^\prime π$ channel than in the $ηπ$ channel, consistent with what has previously been observed in pion beam experiments. This suggests that the sizeable production of exotic odd waves in $η'π$ is not necessarily related to the presence of gluon-rich environments. Confirmation of these predicted asymmetries from forthcoming GlueX data would enable further predictions of the low-energy spectrum.

A unitary coupled-channel three-body amplitude with pions and kaons

Three-body dynamics above threshold is required for the reliable extraction of many amplitudes and resonances from experiment and lattice QCD. The S-matrix principle of unitarity can be used to construct dynamical coupled-channel approaches in which three particles scatter off each other, re-arranging two-body subsystems by particle exchange. This paper reports the development of a three-body coupled-channel, amplitude including pions and kaons. The unequal-mass amplitude contains two-body S- and P-wave subsystems ("isobars") of all isospins, $I=0,\,1/2,\,1,\, 3/2, \, 2$, and it also allows for transitions within a given isobar. The $f_0(500)\, ("σ"),\,f_0(980),\,ρ(700), K_0^*(700)\,("κ")$, and $K^*(892)$ resonances are included, apart from repulsive isobars. Different methods to evaluate the amplitude for physical momenta are discussed. Production amplitudes for $a_1$ quantum numbers are shown as a proof of principle for the numerical implementation.

Revisiting gauge invariance and Reggeization of pion exchange

The Reggeized pion is expected to provide the main contribution to the forward cross section in light meson photoproduction reactions with charge exchange at high energies. We discuss the Reggeization of pion exchange in charged pion photoproduction with an emphasis on consistency with current conservation. We show that the gauge-invariant amplitude for the exchange of a particle with generic even spin $J\geq 2$ in the $t$-channel is analytic at $J=0$, and that it can be interpreted in terms of the nucleon electric current. This enables us to reconcile the dynamics in the $s$- and $u$-channel, which involves also nucleon exchanges, with the amplitude expressed in terms of $t$-channel partial waves, as required by Regge theory.

Studying $π^+π^-$ photoproduction beyond Pomeron exchange

Forward photoproduction of $π^+π^-$ pairs with invariant mass of the order of $m_ρ\sim 770$ MeV is traditionally understood to be produced via Pomeron exchange. Based on a detailed analysis of the CLAS photoproduction data, it is shown that the dynamics of two-pion photoproduction for $|t|\gtrsim 0.5$ GeV$^2$ cannot be explained by Pomeron exchange alone. This motivates the development of a new theoretical model of two-pion photoproduction which incorporates both two-pion and pion-nucleon resonant contributions. After fitting free parameters, the model provides an excellent description of the low moments of the angular distribution measured at CLAS, and enables an assessment of the relative contributions of particular production mechanisms and an interpretation of the various features of the data in terms of these mechanisms.

Off-shellness in generalized parton distributions and form factors of the pion

We study the effects of off-shellness in the generalized parton distributions of the pion. On general grounds, these distributions exhibit a richer structure than in the on-shell case due to absence of the crossing symmetry. In particular, their moments involve additional terms odd in the skewness parameter, associated with new form factors. We bring up relations between the off-shell charge and gravitational form factors, as well as the pion form factor, and discuss their derivations based on the Ward-Takahashi identities. We illustrate the features at the (leading-$N_c$) one-quark-loop level with the help of the spectral quark model of the pion, constructed to embed the vector meson dominance. Simple analytic expressions for the form factors and the distributions follow. Thus obtained off-shell generalized parton distributions are evolved from the quark model scale to higher scales with the LO DGLAP equations. We evaluate the corresponding Compton amplitudes which enter the cross-section for the electroproduction of the pion off the proton (the Sullivan process). It is found in our model that the effects of off-shellness in the generalized parton distribution are substantial, however, they can be largely canceled by the corresponding off-shell corrections to the pion propagator. In particular, this is the case of the Compton form factors entering the deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitude. As a result, we expect small off-shellness effects in electroproduction reactions, such as the Sullivan process.

Sill distribution: genesis and salient features

We present the so-called Sill distribution, both in the nonrelativistic and relativistic cases, as a natural and simple way to include the effect of threshold(s) on the energy line shapes of resonances. The Sill is correctly normalized (even for broad states), is continuous at threshold(s), does not require any modification to the `mass part', is easily extendable to the multichannel case, and can be applied to both mesons and baryons. Here, as a novel example, we employ the Sill to describe the resonance $ψ(3770)$.

Higgs-Higgs scattering and the (non-)existence of the Higgsonium

We study the Higgs-Higgs scattering process and the possible emergence of a Higgs-Higgs bound state (Higgsonium) in any Higgs potential with the vacuum expectation value and second derivative matching the corresponding values from the Standard Model (SM). From the tree-level Higgs-Higgs scattering amplitude, we construct the unitarized amplitude using two different unitarization schemes (the well-known on-shell and N/D methods). We reproduce the known result that there is no Higgsonium state in the SM and, in addition, we determine the S-, D-, and G-wave SM scattering lengths, both at tree-level and upon unitarization. In doing so, we refine previous results by checking the convergence of the N/D approach. Next, we extend the calculation for non-SM potentials and investigate under which conditions a formation of a bound state close to the Higgs-Higgs threshold is possible. In this way, the assumption that no Higgsonium exist, imposes certain bounds on the values of the self-interaction parameters that complement those imposed by the vacuum stability condition.

Radiative production and decays of the exotic $η_1^\prime(1855)$ and its siblings

We study the production of the light $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ hybrid isoscalars $η_1^\prime(1855)$ and the yet undiscovered $η_1^{hyb}(1660)$ as intermediate states in the radiative decays of the charmonium ($J/ψ$) to two conventional mesons using a flavor symmetric Lagrangian. For this purpose, we use the $J/ψ\toγη_1^\prime(1855)\toγηη^\prime$ process as the reference. We find that some of the decay channels have branching ratios similar to or larger than that of the $γηη^\prime$ channel and are sensitive to the mixing between the hybrid isoscalars. We propose that relatively stable $γηf_1(1285)$ channel be explored for the presence of the light hybrid isoscalar $η_1^{hyb}(1660)$. We also exploit the strong decay channels containing at least one vector meson to study the radiative decays of the whole hybrid nonet $\{π_1(1600),K_1^{hyb}(1750),η_1^{hyb}(1660),η_1'(1855)\}$. We find that the hybrids cannot radiatively decay into the $I=0$ pseudoscalars. Furthermore, the vector decay channels ($(ρ/ω/ϕ)γ$) of the hybrid isoscalars are sensitive to the strangeness content of the hybrids. We also provide estimates for the branching fractions for the radiative production and partial widths for the radiative decays of the hybrids.

Off-shell generalized parton distributions of the pion

We analyze off-shell effects in the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the pion in the context of the Sullivan electroproduction process, as well as the corresponding half-off-shell electromagnetic and gravitational form factors. We illustrate our general results within a chiral quark model, where the off-shell effects show up at a significant level, indicating their contribution to uncertainties in the extraction of the GPDs from the future experimental data.

Off-shell generalized parton distributions and form factors of the pion

Off-shell effects in generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the pion, appearing, e.g., in the Sullivan process, are considered. Due to the lack of crossing symmetry, the moments of GPDs involve also odd powers of the skewness (longitudinal momentum transfer) parameter, which results in emergence of new off-shell form factors. With current-algebra techniques, we derive exact relations between the four off-shell gravitational form factors of the pion, in analogy to the electromagnetic case. Our results place stringent constraints on the off-shell GPDs of the pion. We provide an explicit realization in terms of a chiral quark model, where we show that the off-shell effects in GPDs are potentially significant in modeling physical processes and should not be neglected.

Generalized quasi, Ioffe-time, and pseudo quark distributions of the pion in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We analyze the generalized quasi, Ioffe-time, and pseudo distributions of the valence quarks in the pion at the quark model scale. We use the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and investigate the basic question of how fast the pion has to move to effectively reach the infinite momentum limit, where the approach can provide the information on the generalized parton distribution functions. We consider both the vector distributions and the transversity distributions, related to the spin densities. With the developed analytic expressions, we conclude that to effectively approach the infinite momentum limit, one roughly needs the pion momenta of the order of $\sim 3$GeV. We also explore polynomiality of the quasi distributions and study the generalized quasi form factors. The issue of separability of the transverse and longitudinal dynamics in the model is studied with the help of the generalized Ioffe-time distributions, with the conclusion that the breaking is not substantial, unless the momentum transfer $t$ is large. We also provide an estimate of the range of the Ioffe-time values needed to obtain the generalized parton distributions with a reasonable accuracy. Our model results, which are analytic or semi-analytic, provide a valuable insight into the theoretical formalism and illustrate the intricate features of the investigated distributions.

The hybrid nonet of $π_1(1600)$ and $η_1(1855)$: analysis and predictions for the kaonic members

The hybrid mesons form a part of the exotic spectrum of the standard model. The recent observation of the isoscalar hybrid, called the $η_1(1855)$, provides an important step towards the completion of the $1^{-+}$ nonet. In the present work, we analyze the masses and two-body decays of the members of this nonet using a model hadronic Lagrangian. The isovector $π_1(1600)$ has been studied extensively - both experimentally and on lattice. We use the available experimental and lattice data to extract the coupling constants. Using these parameters, we analyze the possible decay channels for the hybrid kaons.

The phenomenology of the exotic hybrid nonet with $π_1(1600)$ and $η_1(1855)$

We study the decays of the $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ hybrid nonet using a Lagrangian invariant under the flavor symmetry, parity reversal, and charge conjugation. We use the available experimental data, the lattice predictions, and the flavor constraints to evaluate the coupling strengths of the $π_1(1600)$ to various two-body mesonic states. Using these coupling constants, we estimate the partial widths of the two-body decays of the hybrid pion, kaon and the isoscalars. We find that the hybrid kaon can be nearly as broad as the $π_1(1600)$. Quite remarkably, we find also that the light isoscalar must be significantly narrow while the width of the heavy isoscalar can be matched to the recently observed $η_1(1855)$.

Constraints imposed by the partial wave amplitudes on the decays of $J=1,2$ mesons

We study the two-body decays of mesons using the covariant helicity formalism. In particular, we show how the partial wave analysis of decays constrains the interacting terms entering the Lagrangian describing the decays of mesons with $J=1$ and $J=2$. We use available information on partial wave analysis to study specific mesonic decays and to make predictions for not yet measured quantities as well as to investigate the isoscalar mixing angle in the axial-vector, pseudovector and pseudotensor sectors. In particular, in the axial-vector sector our result agrees with the LHCb one, and in the pseudotensor sector we confirm a quite large (and negative) angle in the nonstrange-strange basis, which is compatible with a large contribute of the axial anomaly.

Ratios of Partial Wave Amplitudes in the Decays of $J=1$ and $J=2$ Mesons

We study the two-body decay of mesons using the covariant helicity formalism. We find that to explain the ratio of partials wave amplitudes (PWAs) of the decay, the Lagrangian must include derivative interactions in addition to contact interactions. We estimate the ratios of the coupling constants for the vector decays of the axial-vector, pseudovector and pseudotensor meson, and the tensor decays of the pseudotensor mesons by fitting the ratios of the PWAs to the available data and predict the ratios to some new decays.
