In Situ Coherence Measurements of Scattered Light in Magnetically Trapped Cold Atomic Clouds: Probe-Driven Atomic Dynamics

The use of temporal correlations in scattered photons to probe the microscopic dynamics of ultracold quantum gases has emerged as a powerful, minimally destructive approach for in situ analysis. Here, we demonstrate that temporal coherence spectroscopy can quantitatively characterize atomic motion in a magnetic trap, despite the perturbative effects of the probing light. By measuring the first-order correlation function g (1) ($τ$ ) of light scattered by a 87 Rb cloud confined in a quadrupole trap, we identify radiation-pressure-induced acceleration and heating as the origin of the apparent discrepancy between coherence spectra and temperatures inferred from time-of-flight measurements. A simple dynamical model incorporating these effects restores agreement between theory and experiment, establishing coherence spectroscopy as a reliable in situ probe of velocity distributions in trapped atomic ensembles. Our results pave the way for time-resolved studies of nonequilibrium dynamics and thermalization processes in confined cold gases, complementing conventional destructive imaging techniques.

Universal scaling and relaxation in decaying turbulence of Bose gases

Understanding the relaxation dynamics of isolated quantum systems remains a central challenge in nonequilibrium physics. In this short review, we discuss recent experimental and theoretical advances in universal dynamics of turbulent Bose gases, with particular emphasis on nonthermal fixed points and wave turbulence in our experimental system at the São Carlos Institute of Physics of the University of São Paulo. We highlight the emergence of self-similar scaling behavior and its connection to particle and energy transport across momentum scales. In addition, we discuss an approach in which a differential equation has a universal scaling solution, providing a practical framework for extracting universal exponents from limited regions of the momentum distribution. Furthermore, we recap experimental observations of direct and inverse cascades in a three-dimensional trapped Bose--Einstein condensate, revealing distinct relaxation stages governed by universal scaling laws. These results demonstrate that turbulence plays a key role in far-from-equilibrium dynamics, offering a unified perspective on transport processes and thermalization in quantum many-body systems.

Expansion of a quantum gas in a shell trap

We report the observation of the controlled expansion of a two-dimensional quantum gas confined onto a curved shell-shaped surface. We start from the ellipsoidal geometry of a dressed quadrupole trap and introduce a novel gravity compensation mechanism enabling to explore the full ellipsoid. The zero-point energy of the transverse confinement manifests itself by the spontaneous emergence of an annular shape in the atomic distribution. The experimental results are compared with the solution of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and with a two-dimensional semi-analytical model. This work evidences how a hidden dimension can affect dramatically the embedded low-dimensional system by inducing a change of topology.

Stability change of a multi-charged vortex due to coupling with quadrupole mode

We have studied collective modes of quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates with multiply-charged vortices using a variational approach. Two of the four collective modes considered exhibit coupling between the vortex dynamics and the large-scale motion of the cloud. The vortex presence causes a shift in all frequencies of collective modes even for the ones that do not couple dynamically with the vortex-core. The coupling between vortex and large-scale collective excitations can induce the multi-charged vortex to decay into singly-charged vortices with the quadrupole mode being one possible channel for such a decay. Therefore a thorough study was done about the possibility to prevent the vortex decay by applying a Gaussian potential with its width proportional to the vortex-core radius and varying its height. In such way, we created a stability diagram of height versus interaction strength which has stable regions due the static Gaussian potential. Furthermore, by using a sinusoidal time-modulation around the average height of the Gaussian potential, we have obtained a diagram for the parametric resonance which can prevent the vortex decay in regions where static potential can not.

Compact Frequency Standard Based on an Intra-cavity Sample Cold Cesium Atoms

We have demonstrated the possibility for a compact frequency standard based on a sample of cold cesium atoms. In a cylindrical microwave cavity, the atoms are cooled and interrogated during a free expansion and then detected. The operation of this experiment is different from conventional atomic fountains, since all the steps are sequentially performed in the same position of space. In this paper we report the analysis of a Ramsey pattern observed to present a 47 Hz linewidth and a stability of 5x10^-13 for an integration time longer than 100s. Some of the main limitations of the standard are analyzed. This present report demonstrates considerable improvement of our previous work (S. T. Muller et al, J. Opt. Soc. Am. B, v.25, p.909, 2008) where the atoms were in a free space and not inside a microwave cavity.
