Composition-Driven High-Entropy Alloys with Enhanced Magnetocaloric Properties

High entropy alloys (HEAs) are promising magnetocaloric materials with tunable operating temperature conditions using compositional modifications. Here, we combine experiments and first principles based spin modelling to engineer magnetocaloric response in single-phase cubic HEAs consisting of earth-abundant elements such as Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, and Cu. An equiatomic (Fe20Ni20Co20Cr20Cu20) and a Fe and Co rich non equiatomic (Fe34Ni17.7Co24.8Cr15.2Cu8.3) show a continuous ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition with Curie temperature (TC)=110 K and TC=420 K for non equiatomic. Under the 1.6 Tesla magnetic field, the investigated alloy shows the entropy change =1.24 J per kgK with relative cooling power (RCP) =92 J per kg due to a broader effective cooling span. Density functional theory simulations reveal that reducing Cu enhances the spin-polarized Fe, Co, or Ni, 3d weight near fermi level, consistent with stronger ferromagnetic exchange. Exchange couplings mapped onto a classical Heisenberg model and solved by atomistic Monte Carlo to theoretically predict TC of both the investigated alloys. A controlled theoretical Cu sweep in equimolar further confirms that increasing Cu monotonically dilutes the magnetic sublattice and lowers TC, providing a quantitative design guideline to tune magnetocaloric operating temperatures in transition metal HEAs.

Harvesting magneto-acoustic waves using magnetic two-dimensional chromium telluride (CrTe3)

A vast majority of electrical devices have integrated magnetic units, which generate constant magnetic fields with noticeable vibrations. The majority of existing nanogenerators acquire energy through friction/mechanical forces and most of these instances overlook acoustic vibrations and magnetic fields. Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) tellurides present a wide range of possibilities for devising a potential flexible energy harvester. We have synthesized two-dimensional chromium telluride (2D CrTe3) which exhibits ferromagnetic (FM) nature with a Tc of 224 K. The structure exhibits stable high remnant magnetization, making 2D CrTe3 flakes a potential material for harvesting of magneto-acoustic waves at room temperature. A magneto-acoustic nanogenerator (MANG) was fabricated composing of 2D CrTe3 dispersed in a polymer matrix. Basic mechanical stability and sensitivity of the device with change in load conditions were tested. A high surface charge density of 2.919 mC m-2 was obtained for the device. The thermal strain created in the lattice structure was examined using in-situ Raman spectroscopic measurements. The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) responsible for long-range FM ordering was calculated with the help of theoretical modelling. The theoretical calculations also showed opening of electronic bandgap which enhances the flexoelectric effects. The MANG can be a potential energy harvester to synergistically tap into the magneto-acoustic vibrations generated from the frequency changes of a vibrating device such as loudspeakers.

Highly Complex Magnetic Structures Resulting From Hierarchical Phase Separation in AlCo(Cr)FeNi High Entropy Alloys

Magnetic high entropy alloys (HEAs) are a new category of high-performance magnetic materials, with multi-component concentrated compositions and complex multi-phase structures. Although there have been numerous reports of their interesting magnetic properties, there is very limited understanding about the interplay between their hierarchical multi-phase structures and their local magnetic structures. By employing high spatial resolution correlative magnetic, structural and chemical studies, we reveal the influence of a hierarchically decomposed B2 + A2 structure in an AlCo0.5Cr0.5FeNi HEA on the formation of magnetic vortex states within individual A2 (disordered BCC) precipitates, which are distributed in an ordered B2 matrix that is weakly ferromagnetic. Non-magnetic or weakly ferromagnetic B2 precipitates in large magnetic domains of the A2 phase, and strongly magnetic Fe-Co-rich interphase A2 regions, are also observed. These results provide important insight into the origin of coercivity in this HEA, which can be attributed to a complex magnetization process that includes the successive reversal of magnetic vortices.
