EFT for Soft Drop Double Differential Cross Section

We develop a factorization framework to compute the double differential cross section in soft drop groomed jet mass and groomed jet radius. We describe the effective theories in the large, intermediate, and small groomed jet radius regions defined by the interplay of the jet mass and the groomed jet radius measurement. As an application we present the NLL$'$ results for the perturbative moments that are related to the coefficients $C_1$ and $C_2$ that specify the leading hadronization corrections up to three universal parameters. We compare our results with Monte Carlo simulations and a calculation using the coherent branching method.

Forward scattering in a thermal Plasma

I examine the regime of forward scattering of an energetic particle in a Plasma medium in thermal equilibrium. Treating the particle as an open quantum system interacting with a bath, I look at the time evolution of the reduced density matrix of the system. The kinematic and dynamical time scales that emerge can exist in several possible hierarchies which can lead to different EFT formulations. I show that in certain hierarchies, it becomes necessary to account for arbitrary number of coherent exchanges between the system and the bath going beyond the independent scattering paradigm. Analytic results are obtained in certain limits and the formalism is applied for the measurement of transverse momentum broadening of a quark in a Quark Gluon Plasma medium.

Probing Transverse-Momentum Distributions With Groomed Jets

We present the transverse momentum spectrum of groomed jets in di-jet events for $e^+e^-$ collisions and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The jets are groomed using a soft-drop grooming algorithm which helps in mitigating effects of non-global logarithms and underlying event. At the same time, by reducing the final state hadronization effects, it provides a clean access to the non-perturbative part of the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. In SIDIS experiments we look at the transverse momentum of the groomed jet measured w.r.t. the incoming hadron in the Breit frame. Because the final state hadronization effects are significantly reduced, the SIDIS case allows to probe the TMD parton distribution functions. We discuss the sources of non-perturbative effects in the low transverse momentum region including novel (but small) effects that arise due to grooming. We derive a factorization theorem within SCET and resum any large logarithm in the measured transverse momentum up to NNLL accuracy using the $ζ$-prescription as implemented in the artemide package and provide a comparison with simulations.

Breakdown of the naive parton model in super-weak scale collisions

In this letter we show that for observables which involve the measurement of weak charge in final states in hadronic collisions, the standard parton model picture breaks down at scales well above the weak scale due to nonfactorizable electroweak corrections at leading order in the power expansion. This implies that the resummation of these factorization-violating logarithms, which start at order $α_s^2\, α_W^2 \log^4(Q^2/M_W^2)$, cannot be accomplished solely by following standard DGLAP evolution equations; other techniques will be needed to systematically sum large logarithms.

Predictions for energy correlators probing substructure of groomed heavy quark jets

We develop an effective field theory (EFT) framework to perform an analytic calculation for energy correlator observables computed on groomed heavy-quark jets. A soft-drop grooming algorithm is applied to a jet initiated by a massive quark to minimize soft contamination effects such as pile-up and multi-parton interactions. We specifically consider the two-particle energy correlator as an initial application of this EFT framework to compute heavy quark jet substructure. We find that there are different regimes for the event shapes, depending on the size of the measured correlator observable, that require the use of different EFT formulations, in which the quark mass and grooming parameters may be relevant or not. We use the EFT to resum large logarithms in the energy correlator observable in terms of the momentum of a reconstructed heavy hadron to NLL$'$ accuracy and subsequently match it to a full QCD $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ cross section, which we also compute. We compare our predictions to simulations in PYTHIA for $e^+e^-$ collisions. We find a good agreement with partonic simulations, as well as hadronic ones with an appropriate shape function used to describe nonperturbative effects and the heavy quark hadron decay turned off. We also predict the scaling behavior for the leading nonperturbative power correction due to hadronization. Consequently, we can give a prediction for the energy correlator distribution at the level of the reconstructed heavy hadron. This work provides a general framework for the analysis of heavy quark jet substructure observables.

Precision Photon Spectra for Wino Annihilation

We provide precise predictions for the hard photon spectrum resulting from neutral SU$(2)_W$ triplet (wino) dark matter annihilation. Our calculation is performed utilizing an effective field theory expansion around the endpoint region where the photon energy is near the wino mass. This has direct relevance to line searches at indirect detection experiments. We compute the spectrum at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy within the framework established by a factorization formula derived previously by our collaboration. This allows simultaneous resummation of large Sudakov logarithms (arising from a restricted final state) and Sommerfeld effects. Resummation at NLL accuracy shows good convergence of the perturbative series due to the smallness of the electroweak coupling constant - scale variation yields uncertainties on our NLL prediction at the level of $5\%$. We highlight a number of interesting field theory effects that appear at NLL associated with the presence of electroweak symmetry breaking, which should have more general applicability. We also study the importance of using the full spectrum as compared with a single endpoint bin approximation when computing experimental limits. Our calculation provides a state of the art prediction for the hard photon spectrum that can be easily generalized to other DM candidates, allowing for the robust interpretation of data collected by current and future indirect detection experiments.

Resummed Photon Spectra for WIMP Annihilation

We construct an effective field theory (EFT) description of the hard photon spectrum for heavy WIMP annihilation. This facilitates precision predictions relevant for line searches, and allows the incorporation of non-trivial energy resolution effects. Our framework combines techniques from non-relativistic EFTs and soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), as well as its multi-scale extensions that have been recently introduced for studying jet substructure. We find a number of interesting features, including the simultaneous presence of SCET$_{\text{I}}$ and SCET$_{\text{II}}$ modes, as well as collinear-soft modes at the electroweak scale. We derive a factorization formula that enables both the resummation of the leading large Sudakov double logarithms that appear in the perturbative spectrum, and the inclusion of Sommerfeld enhancement effects. Consistency of this factorization is demonstrated to leading logarithmic order through explicit calculation. Our final result contains both the exclusive and the inclusive limits, thereby providing a unifying description of these two previously-considered approximations. We estimate the impact on experimental sensitivity, focusing for concreteness on an SU(2)$_{W}$ triplet fermion dark matter - the pure wino - where the strongest constraints are due to a search for gamma-ray lines from the Galactic Center. We find numerically significant corrections compared to previous results, thereby highlighting the importance of accounting for the photon spectrum when interpreting data from current and future indirect detection experiments.

Transverse Momentum Spectra at Threshold for Groomed Heavy Quark Jets

We present the transverse momentum spectrum for a heavy hadron at threshold in a groomed jet initiated by a heavy quark. The cross section is doubly differential in the energy fraction of an identified heavy hadron in the jet and its transverse momentum measured with respect to the groomed (recoil free) jet axis. The grooming is implemented using a soft-drop grooming algorithm and helps us in mitigating the effects of Non-Global logarithms and pile up. For the particular case of a $B$ meson, we identify two distinct regimes of the transverse momentum spectrum and develop an EFT within the formalisms of Soft Collineat Effective Theory (SCET) and Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) for each of these regions. We show how each region can be matched smoothly into the other to provide a prediction for the perturbative transverse momentum spectrum. The EFT also predicts the scaling behavior of the leading non-perturbative power corrections and implements a simple shape function to account for hadronization. We work in the threshold region where the heavy hadron carries most of the energy of the jet since in this regime, we have a very good discriminating power between heavy quark and gluon initiated jets. We observe that the shape of the spectrum is independent of the energy of the jet over a large range of transverse momentum. We propose that this spectrum can be used as a probe of evolution for heavy quark TMD fragmentation function. At the same time, it can be treated as a jet substructure observable for probing Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP).

Hunting for Heavy Winos in the Galactic Center

Observing gamma rays using ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes provides one of the only probes of heavy weakly interacting dark matter. A canonical target is the thermal wino, for which the strongest limits come from searches for photon lines from annihilations in the Galactic Center. Irreducible finite energy resolution effects motivate refining the prediction for a wino signal beyond the photon line approximation; recently, modern effective field theory techniques have been utilized to obtain a precise calculation of the full photon energy spectrum from wino annihilation. In this paper, we investigate the implications for a realistic mock H.E.S.S.-like line search. We emphasize the impact of including the non-trivial spectral shape, and we carefully treat the region of interest, presenting results for choices between $1^{\circ}$ and $4^{\circ}$ from the Galactic Center. Projected limits for wino masses from $1$-$70$ TeV are interpreted as a constraint on the wino annihilation rate, or alternatively as the minimum core size required such that the wino is not excluded. If there is a thermal wino, H.E.S.S. will be able to probe cores of several kpc, which would begin to cause tension between this dark matter candidate and astrophysical observations/simulations.

Probing Transverse-Momentum Dependent Evolution With Groomed Jets

We propose an observable which involves measuring the properties (transverse momentum $p_{h\perp}$ and energy fraction $z_h$) of an identified hadron inside a groomed jet. The jet is identified with an anti-kT/CA algorithm and is groomed by implementing the modified mass drop procedure with an energy cut-off parameter $z_{cut}$. The transverse momentum of the hadron inside the jet is measured with respect to the groomed jet axis. We obtain a factorization theorem in the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), to define a Transverse Momentum Dependent Fragmenting Jet Function (TMDFJF). The TMDFJF is factorized into collinear and collinear soft modes by matching onto SCET$_+$. We resum large logarithms in $E_J/p_{h\perp}$, where $E_J$ is the ungroomed jet energy, to NLL accuracy and apply this formalism for computing the shape of the $p_{h\perp}$ distribution of a pion produced in an $e^+ +e^-$ collision. We observe that the introduction of grooming makes this observable insensitive to non-global logarithms and particularly sensitive to non-perturbative physics of the transverse momentum dependent evolution at low values of $p_{h\perp}$, which can be probed in the variation of the cut-off parameter $z_{cut}$ of the groomer. We discuss how this observable can be used to distinguish between non-perturbative models that describe universal TMD evolution and provide a window into the three dimensional structure of hadrons.

A fast and accurate method for perturbative resummation of transverse momentum-dependent observables

We propose a novel strategy for the perturbative resummation of transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) observables, using the $q_T$ spectra of gauge bosons ($γ^*$, Higgs) in $pp$ collisions in the regime of low (but perturbative) transverse momentum $q_T$ as a specific example. First we introduce a scheme to choose the factorization scale for virtuality in momentum space instead of in impact parameter space, allowing us to avoid integrating over (or cutting off) a Landau pole in the inverse Fourier transform of the latter to the former. The factorization scale for rapidity is still chosen as a function of impact parameter $b$, but in such a way designed to obtain a Gaussian form (in $\ln b$) for the exponentiated rapidity evolution kernel, guaranteeing convergence of the $b$ integral. We then apply this scheme to obtain the $q_T$ spectra for Drell-Yan and Higgs production at NNLL accuracy. In addition, using this scheme we are able to obtain a fast semi-analytic formula for the perturbative resummed cross sections in momentum space: analytic in its dependence on all physical variables at each order of logarithmic accuracy, up to a numerical expansion for the pure mathematical Bessel function in the inverse Fourier transform that needs to be performed just once for all observables and kinematics, to any desired accuracy.

Soft evolution after a hard scattering process

The dynamical cascade of momentum, spin, charge, and other quantum numbers from an ultra-violet process into the infra-red is a fundamental concern for asymptotically free or conformal gauge field theories. It is also a practical concern for any high energy scattering experiment with energies above tens of GeV. We present a formulation of the evolution equation that governs this cascade, the Banfi-Marchesini-Smye equation, from both an effective field theory point of view and a direct diagrammatic argument. The equation uses exact momentum conservation, and is applicable to both scattering with initial and final state hard partons. The direct diagrammatic formulation is organized by constructing a generating functional. This functional is also automatically realized with soft wilson lines and collinear field operators coupled to external currents. The two approaches are directly connected by reverse engineering the Lehman-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction procedure to insert states within the soft and collinear matrix elements. At leading order, the cascade is completely controlled by the soft anomalous dimension. By decomposing the anomalous dimension into on-shell and off-shell regions as would be realized in the effective field theory approach with a Glauber mediating potential, we are forced to choose a transverse momentum ordering in order to trivialize the overlap between Glauber potential contributions and the pure soft region. The evolution equation then naturally incorporates factorization violating effects driven by off-shell exchanges for active partons. Finally, we examine the consequences of abandoning exact momentum conservation as well as terminating the evolution at the largest inclusive scale, procedures often used to simplify the analysis of the cascade.

Semi-Inclusive Wino and Higgsino Annihilation to LL'

We systematically compute the annihilation rate for winos and higgsinos into the final state relevant for indirect detection experiments, gamma + X. The radiative corrections to this process receive enhancement from the large Bloch-Nordsieck-Violating Sudakov logarithm, log(2 M_chi/M_W). We resum the double logs and include single logs to fixed order using a formalism that combines nonrelativistic and soft-collinear effective field theories. For the wino case, we update an earlier exclusion adapting results of the HESS experiment. At the thermal relic mass of 3 TeV, LL' corrections result in a ~30% reduction in rate relative to LL. Nonetheless, single logs do not save the wino, and it is still excluded by an order of magnitude. Experimental cuts produce an endpoint region which, our results show, significantly effects the higgsino rate at its thermal-relic mass near 1 TeV and is deserving of further study.

Constraints on Galactic Wino Densities from Gamma Ray Lines

We systematically compute the annihilation rate for neutral winos into the final state gamma + X, including all leading radiative corrections. This includes both the Sommerfeld enhancement (in the decoupling limit for the Higgsino) and the resummation of the leading electroweak double logarithms. Adopting an analysis of the HESS experiment, we place constraints on the mass as a function of the wino fraction of the dark matter and the shape of the dark matter profile. We also determine how much coring is needed in the dark matter halo to make the wino a viable candidate as a function of its mass. Additionally, as part of our effective field theory formalism, we show that in the pure-Standard Model sector of our theory, emissions of soft Higgses are power-suppressed and that collinear Higgs emission does not contribute to leading double logs.

On the Annihilation Rate of WIMPs

We develop a formalism that allows one to systematically calculate the WIMP annihilation rate into gamma rays whose energy far exceeds the weak scale. A factorization theorem is presented which separates the radiative corrections stemming from initial state potential interactions from loops involving the final state. This separation allows us to go beyond the fixed order calculation, which is polluted by large infrared logarithms. For the case of Majorana WIMPs transforming in the adjoint representation of SU(2), we present the result for the resummed rate at leading double log accuracy in terms of two initial state partial wave matrix elements and one hard matching coefficient. For a given model, one may calculate the cross section by calculating the tree level matching coefficient and determining the value of a local four fermion operator. We find that the effects of resummation can be as large as 100% for a 20 TeV WIMP. The generalization of the formalism to other types of WIMPs is discussed.

The Higgs Transverse Momentum Distribution at NNLL and its Theoretical Errors

In this letter, we present the NNLL-NNLO transverse momentum Higgs distribution arising from gluon fusion. In the regime $p_\perp\ll m_H$ we include the resummation of the large logs at next to next-to leading order and then match on to the $α_s^2$ fixed order result near $p_\perp \sim m_h$. By utilizing the rapidity renormalization group (RRG) we are able to smoothly match between the resummed, small $p_\perp$ regime and the fixed order regime. We give a detailed discussion of the scale dependence of the result including an analysis of the rapidity scale dependence. Our central value differs from previous results, in the transition region as well as the tail, by an amount which is outside the error band. This difference is due to the fact that the RRG profile allows us to smoothly turn off the resummation.

Gravitational spin Hamiltonians from the S matrix

We utilize generalized unitarity and recursion relations combined with effective field theory(EFT) techniques to compute spin dependent interaction terms for inspiralling binary systems in the post newtonian(PN) approximation. Using these methods offers great computational advantage over traditional techniques involving feynman diagrams, especially at higher orders in the PN expansion. As a specific example, we reproduce the spin-orbit interaction up to 2.5 PN order as also the leading order $S^2$(3PN) hamiltonian for an arbitrary massive object. We also obtain the unknown $S^3$(3.5PN) spin hamiltonian for an arbitrary massive object in terms of its low frequency linear response to gravitational perturbations, which was till now known only for a black hole. Furthermore, we derive the missing $S^4$ Hamiltonian at leading order(4PN) for an arbitrary massive object and establish that a minimal coupling of a massive elementary particle to gravity leads to a black hole structure. Finally, the Kerr metric is obtained as a series in $G_N$ by comparing the action of a test particle in the vicinity of a spinning black hole to the derived potential.
