Curvature Sensitive Cells in the Modular Structures of The Visual Cortex

We propose a model of the functional architecture of curvature-sensitive cells in the primary visual cortex. The model accounts for the modular and hierarchical organization of the cortex, the horizontal connectivity, and the shape of receptive profiles of these cells as Gabor-type filters. We construct a canonical affine subbundle of the cotangent bundle of the manifold of oriented contact elements of the retina as a geometric model for these cells, and show that this subbundle carries an Engel structure related to that of the Cartan prolongation. On an open submanifold of the Cartan prolongation, we identify generators of the Engel distribution whose iterated Lie brackets span the Lie algebra of SIM(2). The identification of sim(2) as the Lie algebra of these generators determines SIM(2) as the natural symmetry group for curvature-sensitive cells. Finally, we characterize the receptive profiles of curvature-sensitive cells as minima of a SIM(2)-adapted uncertainty principle applied to the generators of the Engel structure.

Geometry of Cells Sensible to Curvature and Their Receptive Profiles

We propose a model of the functional architecture of curvature sensible cells in the visual cortex that associates curvature with scale. The feature space of orientation and position is naturally enhanced via its oriented prolongation, yielding a 4-dimensional manifold endowed with a canonical Engel structure. This structure encodes position, orientation, signed curvature, and scale. We associate an open submanifold of the prolongation with the quasi-regular representation of the similitude group SIM (2), and find left-invariant generators for the Engel structure. Finally, we use the generators of the Engel structure to characterize curvature-sensitive receptive profiles .

Gabor frames and higher dimensional boundaries in signal analysis on manifolds

We provide a construction of Gabor frames that encode local linearizations of a signal detected on a curved smooth manifold of arbitrary dimension, with Gabor filters that can detect the presence of higher-dimensional boundaries in the manifold signal. We describe an application in configuration spaces in robotics with sharp constrains. The construction is a higher-dimensional generalization of the geometric setting developed for the study of signal analysis in the visual cortex.

Gabor frames from contact geometry in models of the primary visual cortex

We analyze the interplay between contact geometry and Gabor filters signal analysis in geometric models of the primary visual cortex. We show in particular that a specific framed lattice and an associated Gabor system is determined by the Legendrian circle bundle structure of the $3$-manifold of contact elements on a surface (which models the V1-cortex), together with the presence of an almost-complex structure on the tangent bundle of the surface (which models the retinal surface). We identify a scaling of the lattice, also dictated by the manifold geometry, that ensures the frame condition is satisfied. We then consider a $5$-dimensional model where receptor profiles also involve a dependence on frequency and scale variables, in addition to the dependence on position and orientation. In this case we show that a proposed profile window function does not give rise to frames (even in a distributional sense), while a natural modification of the same generates Gabor frames with respect to the appropriate lattice determined by the contact geometry.
