Neural Spectral Bias and Conformal Correlators II: Modular and Annulus Bootstrap

We develop a neural network bootstrap framework for reconstructing partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) based on modular invariance and the Cardy condition, which are recast as crossing equations for four-point correlators. For torus partition functions, we use the twist-field representation in the symmetric-orbifold description to map modular S-invariance to four-point crossing and focus on the diagonal kinematics of four insertions on a line. For annulus partition functions, we formulate open/closed channel duality as crossing symmetry for mixed four-point functions of defect-changing operators in interface CFT. In both cases, the reconstruction problem is formulated in the anchored-bootstrap form, where the crossing constraints are supplemented by minimal spectral input (a gap) and anchor data. We solve this under-determined problem by using lightweight feed-forward neural networks to parametrise the correlators and their corresponding partition functions. A key ingredient of this approach is the spectral bias of the neural networks in the lazy training regime, which selects specific crossing-symmetric configurations. This reformulation unifies standard modular and annulus constraints in two dimensions with the anchored neural approach for CFT correlators, providing a new way to reconstruct full partition functions from sparse data with remarkable accuracy.

Neural Networks, Dispersion Relations and the Thermal Bootstrap

We review a framework for the conformal bootstrap that does not rely on positivity and treats the infinite tower of high-dimension OPE contributions to conformal correlators through dispersion relations and neural networks. We apply it to scalar thermal two-point functions on $S^1\times \mathbb R^{d-1}$. We discuss the stability properties of the relevant non-convex optimisation scheme and potential relations to recent discussions of smoothness properties in CFT correlators. We illustrate the numerical application of the method to Generalized Free Fields and 4d holographic CFTs. This is a proceedings contribution to the ``Athens Workshop in Theoretical Physics: 10th Anniversary", held at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on December 17-19 2025.

Neural Operators as Efficient Function Interpolators

Neural operators (NOs) are designed to learn maps between infinite-dimensional function spaces. We propose a novel reframing of their use. By introducing an auxiliary base-space, any finite-dimensional function can be viewed as an operator acting by composition on functions of the base-space. Through a range of benchmarks on analytic functions of increasing complexity and dimensionality, we demonstrate that NOs can match or outperform standard multilayer perceptrons and Kolmogorov--Arnold Networks in accuracy while requiring significantly fewer parameters and training time. As a real-world application, we apply a two-dimensional Tensorized Fourier Neural Operator (TFNO) to the nuclear chart, learning a correction to state-of-the-art nuclear mass models as a partially observed residual field. A TFNO ensemble reaches a held-out root-mean-square error of 198.2 keV, placing it among the best recent neural-network approaches while retaining high parameter efficiency and short training times. More broadly, these results introduce NOs as a scalable framework for finite-dimensional function interpolation, from analytic benchmarks to structured scientific data.

When Does Critique Improve AI-Assisted Theoretical Physics? SCALAR: Structured Critic--Actor Loop for Agentic Reasoning

As large language models (LLMs) show increasing promise on research-level physics reasoning tasks and agentic AI becomes more common, a practical question emerges: How does the interaction between researchers and agents affect the results? We study this using SCALAR (Structured Critic--Actor Loop for Agentic Reasoning), an Actor--Critic--Judge pipeline applied to quantum field theory and string theory problems. The Actor proposes solutions, the Critic provides iterative feedback, and an independent Judge evaluates the transcript against reference solutions. We vary the Actor persona, the Critic feedback strategy, and the Actor model family and scale. Multi-turn dialogue improves over single-shot attempts throughout, but both the mechanism of improvement and the value of different prompting choices depend strongly on the Actor--Critic pairing. Increasing the scale within one model family (e.g. from the 8B-parameter DeepSeek-R1 variant to DeepSeek-R1 70B) improves some easier-problem behavior, but does not remove the hardest bottleneck we observe. Critic feedback strategy matters most clearly in the asymmetric Actor--Critic setting (e.g, a lightweight Haiku Actor guided by a stronger Sonnet Critic), where constructive feedback improves mean-score outcomes. In same-family Actor--Critic settings, strategy effects are weaker: lenient feedback is sometimes favored, while strict and adversarial feedback are not beneficial. Taken together, SCALAR provides a controlled testbed for evaluating which interaction structures help or hinder AI-assisted reasoning on known-answer scientific problems.

Neural Networks Reveal a Universal Bias in Conformal Correlators

We propose that simple neural networks (NNs) trained on crossing symmetry can reconstruct conformal correlators restricted to a line to remarkable accuracy. The input is minimal: an external scaling dimension, a spectral gap, and the value of the correlator at a single point. We present evidence across a wide range of conformal theories and dimensions, for both four-point and thermal two-point functions. We attribute these observations to the spectral bias of gradient-based NN training, which appears to align with an intrinsic smoothness property of conformal field theory. This suggests a novel variational principle for conformal correlators and opens a path towards a powerful new computational framework for non-perturbative quantum field theory.

Neural Spectral Bias and Conformal Correlators I: Introduction and Applications

We demonstrate that simple feed-forward neural networks (NNs) can accurately compute correlation functions of conformal field theories (CFTs) on a line. Strikingly, by optimising a NN solely on crossing symmetry and providing only the scaling dimension of the leading non-trivial operator and the correlator's value at a single "anchor point", we can reconstruct target physical correlators to within a few percent. We establish the robustness of this minimal-data approach across a broad class of theories and dimensions, including generalised free fields, contact and one-loop Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$, unitary and non-unitary 2d minimal models, the 3d Ising model, and half-BPS correlators in 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory, together with several thermal two-point functions, notably including those of the 3d Ising model. We argue that this remarkable alignment between NNs and CFTs stems from the spectral bias of gradient-based training, which heavily favours smooth functions. To ground this connection, we analyse the smoothness of conformal correlators using fractional Sobolev semi-norms, Chebyshev spectral decompositions, and a measure based on curvature. Finally, we establish the broader reconstructive power of this technique by extending it beyond the diagonal kinematics of the line.

Efficient Conformal Block Evaluation with GoBlocks

Conformal blocks in odd spacetime dimensions are not known in closed analytic form. To facilitate efficient computations in the conformal bootstrap, we introduce $\texttt{GoBlocks}$: a novel conformal-block generator implemented in the Go programming language, designed for rapid, on-the-fly, parallel evaluation using recursive relations. The package supports both multi-point and derivative-based bootstrap approaches and allows flexible control over accuracy and performance. We benchmark $\texttt{GoBlocks}$ against the $\texttt{scalar_blocks}$ package, finding significant speed improvements in applications where computational speed and moderate accuracy are critical, but ultra-high precision is not essential. As an illustration, we apply $\texttt{GoBlocks}$ to the mixed-correlator bootstrap of the three-dimensional Ising model, formulated as a non-convex optimisation problem in a suitable truncation scheme. We simultaneously optimise over external scaling dimensions and OPE CFT data. In addition, we discuss how the approach scales as we increase the number of mixed correlators in more general $O(N)$ vector models.

FeynTune: Large Language Models for High-Energy Theory

We present specialized Large Language Models for theoretical High-Energy Physics, obtained as 20 fine-tuned variants of the 8-billion parameter Llama-3.1 model. Each variant was trained on arXiv abstracts (through August 2024) from different combinations of hep-th, hep-ph and gr-qc. For a comparative study, we also trained models on datasets that contained abstracts from disparate fields such as the q-bio and cs categories. All models were fine-tuned using two distinct Low-Rank Adaptation fine-tuning approaches and varying dataset sizes, and outperformed the base model on hep-th abstract completion tasks. We compare performance against leading commercial LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek) and derive insights for further developing specialized language models for High-Energy Theoretical Physics.

(Mis-)Matching Type-B Anomalies on the Higgs Branch

Building on arXiv:1911.05827, we uncover new properties of type-B conformal anomalies for Coulomb-branch operators in continuous families of 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs. We study a large class of such anomalies on the Higgs branch, where conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken, and compare them with their counterpart in the CFT phase. In Lagrangian theories, the non-perturbative matching of the anomalies can be determined with a weak coupling Feynman diagram computation involving massive multi-loop banana integrals. We extract the part corresponding to the anomalies of interest. Our calculations support the general conjecture that the Coulomb-branch type-B conformal anomalies always match on the Higgs branch. On the other hand, we argue that the potential mismatch of anomalies implies the existence of a second covariantly constant metric on the conformal manifold (other than the Zamolodchikov metric), which would impose restrictions on its holonomy group.

Type-B Anomaly Matching and the 6D (2,0) Theory

We study type-B conformal anomalies associated with $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Coulomb-branch operators in 4D $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal field theories. When the vacuum preserves the conformal symmetry these anomalies coincide with the two-point function coefficients in the Coulomb-branch chiral ring. They are non-trivial functions of exactly-marginal couplings that can be determined from the $S^4$ partition function. In this paper, we examine the fate of these anomalies in vacua of the Higgs-branch moduli space, where conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken. We argue non-perturbatively that these anomalies are covariantly constant on conformal manifolds. In some cases, this can be used to show that they match in the broken and unbroken phases. Thus, we uncover a new class of data on the Higgs branch of 4D $\mathcal N=2$ conformal field theories that are exactly computable. An interesting application of this matching occurs in $\mathcal N=2$ circular quivers that deconstruct the 6D (2,0) theory on a torus. In that context, we argue that 4D supersymmetric localisation can be used to calculate non-trivial data involving $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS operators of the 6D theory as exact functions of the complex structure of the torus.

Covariantly Constant Anomalies on Conformal Manifolds

Operators with integer scaling dimensions in even-dimensional conformal field theories exhibit well-known type-B Weyl anomalies. In general, these anomalies depend non-trivially on exactly marginal couplings. We study the corresponding fully covariantised anomaly functional on conformal manifolds in several examples. We show that a natural consequence of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition is that the anomalies are covariantly constant with respect to the exactly marginal couplings. The argument is general and applies even when the conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken on moduli spaces of vacua.

Scattering, Absorption and Emission of Highly Excited Strings

We study tree-level scattering processes of arbitrary string states using the DDF formalism and suitable coherent vertex operators. We obtain new exact compact formulae for heavy-heavy-light-light scattering amplitudes in open or closed bosonic string theories, and derive explicit exact expressions for the absorption cross-sections, and corresponding emission rates, of highly excited string states using the optical theorem and time reversal symmetry. We show that these expressions are independent of the microscopic structure of the excited string states without averaging. For the absorption of massless modes in open string theory, in particular, we find a constant, frequency-independent cross-section. In contrast, the corresponding cross-section for the absorption of massless modes by excited closed strings depends linearly on the frequency, implying a non-trivial grey-body factor. In both cases, at energies below the scale set by the mass of the highly excited strings, we find emission rates with a Boltzmann factor at Hagedorn temperature.

Emergent gravity from hidden sectors and TT deformations

We investigate emergent gravity extending the paradigm of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The emergent graviton is associated to the (dynamical) expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor. We derive the general effective description of such dynamics, and apply it to the case where a hidden theory generates gravity that is coupled to the Standard Model. In the linearized description, generically, such gravity is massive with the presence of an extra scalar degree of freedom. The propagators of both the spin-two and spin-zero modes are positive and well defined. The associated emergent gravitational theory is a bi-gravity theory, as is (secretly) the case in holography. The background metric on which the QFTs are defined, plays the role of dark energy and the emergent theory has always as a solution the original background metric. In the case where the hidden theory is holographic, the overall description yields a higher-dimensional bulk theory coupled to a brane. The effective graviton on the brane has four-dimensional characteristics both in the UV and IR and is always massive.

6D (2,0) Bootstrap with soft-Actor-Critic

We study numerically the 6D (2,0) superconformal bootstrap using the soft-Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm as a stochastic optimizer. We focus on the four-point functions of scalar superconformal primaries in the energy-momentum multiplet. Starting from the supergravity limit, we perform searches for adiabatically varied central charges and derive two curves for a collection of 80 CFT data (70 of these data correspond to unprotected long multiplets and 10 to protected short multiplets). We conjecture that the two curves capture the A- and D-series (2,0) theories. Our results are competitive when compared to the existing bounds coming from standard numerical bootstrap methods, and data obtained using the OPE inversion formula. With this paper we are also releasing our Python implementation of the SAC algorithm, BootSTOP. The paper discusses the main functionality features of this package.

On matched asymptotic expansions of backreacting metastable anti-branes

We construct analytically a perturbative supergravity solution that captures the backreaction of a metastable state of anti-branes in the background of a particular modification of the Klebanov-Strassler throat in a long-wavelength approximation. Our solution, which has no unphysical singularities, describes how non-supersymmetric spherical NS5-branes with dissolved anti-D3 brane charge backreact in a fluxed throat geometry. It supports previous claims that there is a well-behaved supergravity description of the metastable state of wrapped NS5-branes proposed years ago by Kachru, Pearson, and Verlinde.

Conformal Bootstrap with Reinforcement Learning

We introduce the use of reinforcement-learning (RL) techniques to the conformal-bootstrap programme. We demonstrate that suitable soft Actor-Critic RL algorithms can perform efficient, relatively cheap high-dimensional searches in the space of scaling dimensions and OPE-squared coefficients that produce sensible results for tens of CFT data from a single crossing equation. In this paper we test this approach in well-known 2D CFTs, with particular focus on the Ising and tri-critical Ising models and the free compactified boson CFT. We present results of as high as 36-dimensional searches, whose sole input is the expected number of operators per spin in a truncation of the conformal-block decomposition of the crossing equations. Our study of 2D CFTs uses only the global $so(2,2)$ part of the conformal algebra, and our methods are equally applicable to higher-dimensional CFTs. When combined with other, already available, numerical and analytical methods, we expect our approach to yield an exciting new window into the non-perturbative structure of arbitrary (unitary or non-unitary) CFTs.

On the Kähler-Hodge structure of superconformal manifolds

We show that conformal manifolds in $d\geq 3$ conformal field theories with at least 4 supercharges are Kähler-Hodge, thus extending to 3d ${\cal N}=2$ and 4d ${\cal N}=1$ similar results previously derived for 4d ${\cal N}=2$ and ${\cal N}=4$ and various types of 2d SCFTs. Conformal manifolds in SCFTs are equipped with a holomorphic line bundle ${\cal L}$, which encodes the operator mixing of supercharges under marginal deformations. Using conformal perturbation theory and superconformal Ward identities, we compute the curvature of ${\cal L}$ at a generic point on the conformal manifold. We show that the Kähler form of the Zamolodchikov metric is proportional to the first Chern class of ${\cal L}$, with a constant of proportionality given by the two-point function coefficient of the stress tensor, $C_T$. In cases where certain additional conditions about the nature of singular points on the conformal manifold hold, this implies a quantization condition for the total volume of the conformal manifold.

Solving Conformal Field Theories with Artificial Intelligence

In this paper we deploy for the first time Reinforcement-Learning algorithms in the context of the conformal-bootstrap programme to obtain numerical solutions of conformal field theories (CFTs). As an illustration, we use a soft Actor-Critic algorithm and find approximate solutions to the truncated crossing equations of two-dimensional CFTs, successfully identifying well-known theories like the 2D Ising model and the 2D CFT of a compactified scalar. Our methods can perform efficient high-dimensional searches that can be used to study arbitrary (unitary or non-unitary) CFTs in any spacetime dimension.
