Block designs and systems of pairs

We propose a new way to construct one block design from another, thus linking some block designs in a new way. At the same time, we find relationships between block designs and systems of pairs. In particular, these relationships allow us to generate some systems of pairs.

Isoperiodic deformations of Toda curves and chains, the difference Korteweg - de Vries equation, and $SU(N)$ Seiberg-Witten theories

We introduce the dynamics of Toda curves of order $N$ and derive differential equations governing this dynamics. We apply the obtained results to describe isoperiodic deformations of $N$-periodic Toda chains and periodic difference Korteweg-de Vries equation. We describe deformations of the essential spectra of $N$-periodic two-sided Jacobi matrices. We also study singular regimes of $SU(N)$ Seiberg-Witten theory and describe their deformations preserving the number of singularities where new massless particles may occur. We introduce and describe isoequilibrium deformations of arbitrary collections of $d$ real disjoint closed intervals. We conclude by providing explicit triangular solutions to constrained Schlesinger systems.

Isoperiodic deformations of Abelian differentials of the second kind over elliptic curves and the Boussinesq equation

We study deformations of a genus one Riemann surface and of a second order Abelian differential on the surface which preserve the periods of the differential with respect to a chosen canonical homology basis of the surface. We call these deformations isoperiodic. We derive a second order ordinary differential equation with rational coefficients governing the variations of the position of the unique pole of the differential under the isoperiodic deformations. The obtained equation depends on the order of the pole of the differential. We characterize the solutions of the obtained ordinary differential equations that correspond to the isoperiodic deformations. We apply these results to the theory of genus one solutions to the Boussinesq equation.

Deformations of the Hill curves and isoperiodicity in the KdV and the sine-Gordon equations

We consider a family of genus $g$ hyperelliptic curves as double ramified coverings over the Riemann sphere with the set of branch points of the form $\{0, \infty, x_1, \dots, x_g, u_1, \dots, u_g\}$. The branch point at infinity $P_\infty$ is selected to be a marked point on the Riemann surfaces. A meromorphic differential $\Omega$ with a unique pole being of order two at $P_\infty$, is completely defined by the values of half of its periods, the $a$-periods. Fixing values of $a$-periods of $\Omega$, we then find a continuous subfamily in the considered family of hyperelliptic curves along which all the periods of $\Omega$ are constant. This subfamily is defined by the functions $u_j(x_1, \dots, x_g)$, while $x_1, \dots, x_g$ are independent parameters. We derive a system of differential equations for the functions $u_j(x_1, \dots, x_g)$, which, remarkably, has rational coefficients. We call this subfamily the isoperiodic deformations of the hyperelliptic curves relative to the given differential of the second kind $\Omega.$ We deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of isoperiodic deformations. We discuss reality conditions as well. Using the obtained results, we solve the following problem for the Korteweg-de Vries and sine-Gordon equations: starting from an algebro-geometric data which generate a real periodic solution of a period $T$, how to deform the data, so that the associated solutions remain periodic with the same period $T$.

Triangular isomonodromic solutions to a Fuchsian system from superelliptic curves

We give fundamental solutions of arbitrarily sized matrix Fuchsian linear systems, in the case where the coefficients $B^{(i)}$ of the systems are matrix solutions of the Schlesinger system that are upper triangular, and whose eigenvalues follow an arithmetic progression of a rational difference. The values on the superdiagonals of the matrices $B^{(i)}$ are given by contour integrals of meromorphic differentials defined on Riemann surfaces obtained by compactification of superelliptic curves. We show that our fundamental solutions are isomonodromic by obtaining their monodromy matrices.

Mutual incidence matrix of two balanced incomplete block designs

We propose to consider a mutual incidence matrix $M$ of two balanced incomplete block designs built on the same finite set. In the simplest case, this matrix reduces to the standard incidence matrix of one block design. We find all eigenvalues of the matrices $MM^T$ and $M^TM$ and their eigenspaces.

Enumeration of multi-rooted plane trees

We give closed form expressions for the numbers of multi-rooted plane trees with specified degrees of root vertices. This results in an infinite number of integer sequences some of which are known to have an alternative interpretation. We also propose recursion relations for numbers of such trees as well as for the corresponding generating functions. Explicit expressions for the generating functions corresponding to plane trees having two and three roots are derived. As a by-product, we obtain a new binomial identity and a conjecture relating hypergeometric functions.

Isoharmonic deformations and constrained Schlesinger systems

We introduce and study the dynamics of Chebyshev polynomials on $d>2$ real intervals. We define isoharmonic deformations as a natural generalization of the Chebyshev dynamics. This dynamics is associated with a novel class of constrained isomonodromic deformations for which we derive the constrained Schlesinger equations. We provide explicit solutions to these equations in terms of differentials on an appropriate family of hyperelliptic curves of any genus $g=d-1\ge 2$. The verification of the obtained solutions relies on the combinatorial properties of the Bell polynomials and on the analysis on the Hurwitz spaces. From the point of view of the classical algebraic geometry we formulate and solve the problem of constrained Jacobi inversion for hyperelliptic curves. We discuss applications of the obtained results in integrable systems, e.g. billiards within ellipsoids in $\mathbb R^d$.

Triangular Schlesinger systems and superelliptic curves

We study the Schlesinger system of partial differential equations in the case when the unknown matrices of arbitrary size $(p\times p)$ are triangular and the eigenvalues of each matrix form an arithmetic progression with a rational difference $q$, the same for all matrices. We show that such a system possesses a family of solutions expressed via periods of meromorphic differentials on the Riemann surfaces of superelliptic curves. We determine the values of the difference $q$, for which our solutions lead to explicit polynomial or rational solutions of the Schlesinger system. As an application of the $(2\times2)$-case, we obtain explicit sequences of rational solutions and one-parameter families of rational solutions of Painlevé VI equations. Using similar methods, we provide algebraic solutions of particular Garnier systems.

Enumeration of N-rooted maps using quantum field theory

A one-to-one correspondence is proved between the N-rooted ribbon graphs, or maps, with e edges and the (e-N+1)-loop Feynman diagrams of a certain quantum field theory. This result is used to obtain explicit expressions and relations for the generating functions of N-rooted maps and for the numbers of N-rooted maps with a given number of edges using the path integral approach applied to the corresponding quantum field theory.

Feynman diagrams, ribbon graphs, and topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin

We consider two seemingly unrelated problems, the calculation of the WKB expansion of the harmonic oscillator wave functions and the counting the number of Feynman diagrams in QED or in many-body physics and show that their solutions are both encoded in a single enumerative problem, the calculation of the number of certain types of ribbon graphs. In turn, the numbers of such ribbon graphs as a function of the number of their vertices and edges can be determined recursively through the application of the topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin to the algebraic curve encoded in the Schrödinger equation of the harmonic oscillator. We show how the numbers of these ribbon graphs can be written down in closed form for any given number of vertices and edges. We use these numbers to obtain a formula for the number of N-rooted ribbon graphs with e edges, which is the same as the number of Feynman diagrams for 2N-point function with e+1-N loops.

Note on algebro-geometric solutions to triangular Schlesinger systems

We construct algebro-geometric upper triangular solutions of rank two Schlesinger systems. Using these solutions we derive two families of solutions to the sixth Painlevé equation with parameters $({1}/{8}, -{1}/{8}, {1}/{8}, {3}/{8})$ expressed in simple forms using periods of differentials on elliptic curves. Similarly for every integer $n$ different from $0$ and $-1$ we obtain one family of solutions to the sixth Painlevé equation with parameters $(\frac{9n^2+12n+4}{8}, -\frac{n^2}{8}, \frac{n^2}{8}, \frac{4-n^2}{8})$.

Topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin and the Harmonic Oscillator

We apply the Chekhov-Eynard-Orantin topological recursion to the curve corresponding to the quantum harmonic oscillator and demonstrate that the result is equivalent to the WKB wave function. We also show that using the multi-differentials obtained by the topological recursion from the harmonic oscillator curve, one generates naturally the so-called Poincaré polynomials associated with the orbifolds of the metric ribbon graphs.

A new relationship between block designs

We propose a procedure of constructing new block designs starting from a given one by looking at the intersections of its blocks with various sets and grouping those sets according to the structure of the intersections. We introduce a symmetric relationship of friendship between block designs built on a set $V$ and consider families of block designs where all designs are friends of each other, the so-called friendly families. We show that a friendly family admits a partial ordering. Furthermore, we exhibit a map from the power set of $V$, partially ordered by inclusion, to a friendly family of a particular type which preserves the partial order.

Algebro-geometric solutions of the Schlesinger systems and the Poncelet-type polygons in higher dimensions

A new method to construct algebro-geometric solutions of rank two Schlesinger systems is presented. For an elliptic curve represented as a ramified double covering of CP^1, a meromorphic differential is constructed with the following property: the common projection of its two zeros on the base of the covering, regarded as a function of the only moving branch point of the covering, is a solution of a Painleve VI equation. This differential provides an invariant formulation of a classical Okamoto transformation for the Painleve VI equations. A generalization of this differential to hyperelliptic curves is also constructed. In this case, positions of zeros of the differential provide part of a solution of the multidimensional Garnier system. The corresponding solutions of the rank two Schlesinger systems associated with elliptic and hyperelliptic curves are constructed in terms of this differential. The initial data for construction of the meromorphic differential include a point in the Jacobian of the curve, under the assumption that this point has nonvariable coordinates with respect to the lattice of the Jacobian while the branch points vary. It appears that the cases where the coordinates of the point are rational correspond to periodic trajectories of the billiard ordered games associated with g confocal quadrics in (g+1)-dimensional space. This is a generalization of a situation studied by Hitchin, who related algebraic solutions of a Painleve VI equation with the Poncelet polygons.

Cluster automorphisms and compatibility of cluster variables

In this paper, we introduce a notion of unistructural cluster algebras, for which the set of cluster variables uniquely determines the clusters. We prove that cluster algebras of Dynkin type and cluster algebras of rank 2 are unistructural, then prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is unistructural or of Euclidean type, then $f: \mathcal{A}\to \mathcal{A}$ is a cluster automorphism if and only if $f$ is an automorphism of the ambient field which restricts to a permutation of the cluster variables. In order to prove this result, we also investigate the Fomin-Zelevinsky conjecture that two cluster variables are compatible if and only if one does not appear in the denominator of the Laurent expansions of the other.

On higher genus Weierstrass sigma-function

The goal of this paper is to propose a new way to generalize the Weierstrass sigma-function to higher genus Riemann surfaces. Our definition of the odd higher genus sigma-function is based on a generalization of the classical representation of the elliptic sigma-function via Jacobi theta-function. Namely, the odd higher genus sigma-function $σ_χ(u)$ (for $u\in \C^g$) is defined as a product of the theta-function with odd half-integer characteristic $β^χ$, associated with a spin line bundle $χ$, an exponent of a certain bilinear form, the determinant of a period matrix and a power of the product of all even theta-constants which are non-vanishing on a given Riemann surface. We also define an even sigma-function corresponding to an arbitrary even spin structure. Even sigma-functions are constructed as a straightforward analog of a classical formula relating even and odd sigma-functions. In higher genus the even sigma-functions are well-defined on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces outside of a subspace defined by vanishing of the corresponding even theta-constant.

Cluster Automorphisms

In this article, we introduce the notion of cluster automorphism of a given cluster algebra as a $\ZZ$-automorphism of the cluster algebra that sends a cluster to another and commutes with mutations. We study the group of cluster automorphisms in detail for acyclic cluster algebras and cluster algebras from surfaces, and we compute this group explicitly for the Dynkin types and the Euclidean types.
