High Precision Fundamental Physics Experiments at JLab with Spin-transparent Storage Rings of Low-energy Polarized Electron Beams

A breakthrough in fundamental physics experiments measuring particle spin precession may happen if spin-transparent storage rings become adopted tools for such experiments. We present a new design of highly specialized table-sized storage rings, which use low-energy polarized electron beams and Mott polarimetry. Based on the spin transparency ansatz, the spin precession stemming from the magnetic dipole moment is canceled at any beam energy after an electron's turn along the periodic orbit in the ring. Meanwhile, a spin precession induced by the fundamental physics of interest, e.g., the electron's permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) and/or ultralight-dark-matter-mediated forces such as axions, will accumulate. However, capitalizing on such types of rings is not only desirable for measurements of EDMs and axion searches relevant to $CP$ violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe, but may also find very promising applications in quantum computing.

Demonstration of a novel phase space painting method in a coupled lattice to mitigate space charge in high-intensity hadron beams

Multi-turn charge-exchange injection is the primary method of creating high-intensity hadron beams in circular accelerators, and phase space painting during injection enables tailoring of the accumulated phase space distribution. A technique we call eigenpainting allows injection of particles into a single mode of a coupled ring, providing full four-dimensional control of the phase space distribution. Under ideal conditions, uniform eigenpainting generates a linear-force equilibrium distribution in the transverse plane, with zero volume in four-dimensional transverse phase space, even including space charge. We have implemented eigenpainting for the first time in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Accumulator Ring. Injecting 8.8 $μ$C of 800 MeV beam, we obtain a final ratio of intrinsic transverse emittances of $\approx$2.4. We analyze the effect of space charge on the final distribution through comparison of the reconstructed phase space to particle-in-cell simulations.

Feasibility of proton bunch compression in an operational high-power accelerator

A muon collider (MC) would require a high-power proton driver to generate intense muon beams at the start of the accelerator chain. Like other high-power facilities, the driver would accumulate intense proton bunches via charge-exchange injection from a linac into a ring. However, unlike other facilities, the MC would require an extreme longitudinal compression of the bunch. We aim to experimentally study the proposed compression scheme at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), which boasts a world-leading proton bunch intensity. In this paper, we describe the operating parameters of the SNS compared to the MC design, the capabilities of the current RF system, and the available beam diagnostics in the SNS accumulator ring. We also present initial simulations and experiments to judge the feasibility of the proposed research.

Concept of Very-Asymmetric Lepton Collider for Dark Matter Search

Accelerator-based searches for dark matter are aiming for high sensitivity and need an experimental setup with high luminosity. This field of research is often called intensity frontier physics. One of the best motivated portals of interaction between dark matter and ordinary matter is a dark photon which could be observed as a resonance in the invariant mass of the decay products. Electron-positron collisions are known to be the cleanest interaction for such a study. In this paper we propose a scheme for a collider which allows for a luminosity of a few orders of magnitude higher than could be obtained in a conventional symmetric collider and with a few times higher accessible mass than is possible using a positron beam and a fixed target approach. The key concept is based on asymmetric energies: a high-energy circulating positron beam and a low-energy high-intensity electron beam, and optimization of the beam interaction region. We present here a configuration of a collision region of 10 MeV electron and 4 GeV positron beams.

Multiple Energy Storage Rings

Energy recovery linacs have been studied and developed over a number of decades. In the standard arrangement there is a separate particle source and particle beam dump. In this paper, a new arrangement is explored where the energy recovery linac is used as an energy source in a storage ring which has multiple beam energies. Several interesting topologies for the multiple beam energies are shown schematically. Possible energy equilibria with and without radiation damping are discussed. This idea may have applications to the problem of electron cooling.
