Superconducting properties of Nb$_{0.85}$Sc$_{0.15}$ film deposited by magnetron co-sputtering

The technology has been developed for synthesizing Nb$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$ films using magnetron co-sputtering from Nb and Sc targets. The material synthesis was accompanied by structural characterization using X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectometry methods, which enabled the determination of thickness, phase composition and crystal structure. We also analyzed the superconducting properties. The critical temperature $T_c$ was measured for samples with different concentarions of Sc and Nb. The maximum value of $T_c$ equal to 6.35 K was observed for sample with a scandium content of approximately 15 %, which was determined by Auger spectroscopy. Transport and magnetoresistive measurements were performed in microbridges with length of 50 $\mu$m, width of 2 $\mu$m, and thickness of 30 nm. The critical current density was as high as 2.5 $\text{ MA/cm}^{2}$. Magnetic measurements were performed with the field oriented perpendicular to the sample. The upper critical field $H_{c2}(0) = 3.2$ T, electron diffusion coefficient $D = 1.1$ $\text{cm}^{2}/s$, and coherence length $\xi_{GL} = 10.1$ nm. The synthesized Nb$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$ intermetallic compound shows promise for various functional cryogenic electronics devices. \keywords{NbSc; superconductor; microbridge}

Anomalous microwave response in the dissipative regime of topological superconducting devices based on Bi2Te2.3Se0.7

Superconducting proximity junctions based on topological insulators are widely believed to harbor Majorana-like bound states. The latter serves as a paradigm non-local topological quantum computation protocols. Nowadays, a search for topological phases in different materials, perspective for a realization of topological qubits, is one of the central efforts in quantum physics. It is motivated, in particular, by recent observation of anomalous ac Josephson effect, which being a signature of Majorana physics. Its manifestations, such as a fractional Josephson frequency and the absence of the first (or several odd in more rare cases), Shapiro steps, were reported for different materials. Here we study Shapiro steps in Nb/Bi2Te2.3Se0.7/Nb junctions, based on ultrasmall single crystals of a 3D topological insulator synthesized by a physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique. We present evidence that our junctions are ballistic. When subjected to microwave radiation, the junctions exhibit Shapiro steps, but the first step is missing. Typically it is assumed that the missing first step (MFS) effect cannot be observed in the presence of quasiparticle poisoning due to suppression of the 4π-periodic component. Our findings within the context of the RSJ-model of Josephson junction dynamics show that such behaviour of samples corresponds to a specific condition, requiring a minimum of 5% of the 4π-component for disappearance of the first Shapiro step.

Hydrogenic Spin-Valley states of the Bromine donor in 2H-MoTe$_2$

In semiconductors, the identification of doping atomic elements allowing to encode a qubit within spin states is of intense interest for quantum technologies. In transition metal dichalcogenides semiconductors, the strong spin-orbit coupling produces locked spin-valley states with expected long coherence time. Here we study the substitutional Bromine Br\textsubscript{Te} dopant in 2H-MoTe$_2$. Electron spin resonance measurements show that this dopant carries a spin with long-lived nanoseconds coherence time. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we find that the hydrogenic wavefunctions associated with the dopant levels have characteristics spatial modulations that result from their hybridization to the \textbf{Q}-valleys of the conduction band. From a Fourier analysis of the conductance maps, we find that the amplitude and phase of the Fourier components change with energy according to the different irreducible representations of the impurity-site point-group symmetry. These results demonstrate that a dopant can inherit the locked spin-valley properties of the semiconductor and so exhibit long spin-coherence time.

Limitations of the current-phase relation measurements by an asymmetric dc-SQUID

Exotic quantum transport phenomena established in Josephson junctions (JJs) are reflected by a non-sinusoidal current-phase relation (CPR). The solidified approach to measure the CPR is via an asymmetric dc-SQUID with a reference JJ that has a high critical current. We probed this method by measuring CPRs of hybrid JJs based on a 3D topological insulator (TI) Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se with a nanobridge acting as a reference JJ. We captured both highly skewed and sinusoidal critical current oscillations within single devices which contradicts the uniqueness of the CPR. This implies that the widely used method provides inaccurate CPR measurement and leads to misinterpretation. It was shown that the accuracy of the CPR measurement is mediated by the asymmetry in derivatives of the CPRs but not in critical currents as was previously thought. We provided considerations for an accurate CPR measurement that encourage future experiments with reference CPRs different from those that were used before.
