Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-non-invariant aspects of a scalar tachyon field Lagrangian and the scalar tachyon Feynman propagator

A consistent theory of faster-than-light particles (tachyons) can be built replacing the standard Lorentz-invariant approach to the quantum field theory of tachyons by the Lorentz-covariant one, invoking a concept of the preferred reference frame. This is a mandatory condition imposed by the causality conservation. In this article some features of a Lorentz-violating (but Lorentz-covariant) Lagrangian of a scalar tachyon field are considered. It is shown that the equation of motion and Feynman propagator resulting from it are Lorentz-invariant, while the Lorentz symmetry of the suggested tachyon field model can be defined as covariantly broken.

How to implant a causal $Θ$ function into a tachyon field operator, or why tachyons do not violate causality

The postulate of the preferred reference frame in which the signal propagation is governed by retarded causality is a must for any theory of faster-than-light particles and signals. Such a system does exist and is the comoving system of the relativistic cosmology. Restrictions imposed by the causality conservation can be expressed via a causal $Θ$ function assumed to be acting in both, the classical and quantum field theories of tachyons. A Lorentz-covariant introduction of this $Θ$ function, which ensures a causal behaviour of real tachyons (asymptotic tachyon states) preventing the appearance of causal loops constructed with the use of faster-than-light particles and signals, into the tachyon quantum field operators is suggested.

A note on a new paradox in superluminal signalling

The Tolman paradox is well known as a base for demonstrating the causality violation by faster-than-light signals within special relativity. It is constructed using a two-way exchange of faster-than-light signals between two inertial observers who are in a relative motion receding one from another. Recently a one-way superluminal signalling arrangement was suggested as a possible construction of a causal paradox. In this note we show that this suggestion is not correct, and no causality principle violation can occur in any one-way signalling by the use of faster-than-light particles and signals.

Experimental aspects of the tachyon hypothesis

This note is aimed at an introductory presentation of experimental characteristics of charged tachyons, deduced under the assumption that the tachyons possess standard electromagnetic interactions. In particular, Cherenkov radiation by tachyons, their ionization loss in tracking devices and the bremsstrahlung loss in electromagnetic calorimeters are considered.
