Influence of misfit strain on the physical properties of Fe thin films

We investigate the growth of thin Fe layers on MgAl$_2$O$_4$~(001) and MgO~(001) substrates using dc magnetron sputtering. The crystal quality of Fe layers deposited on MgAl$_2$O$_4$ is found to be substantially higher as compared to Fe grown on MgO substrates. The effects of the crystal quality on the magnetic and electronic transport properties are discussed.

Texture fluctuations and emergent dynamics in coupled nanomagnets

We analyse the thermal fluctuations of magnetization textures in two stray field coupled elements, forming mesospins. To this end, the energy landscape associated with the thermal dynamics of the textures is mapped out and asymmetric energy barriers are identified. These barriers are modified by changing the gap that separates the mesospins. Moreover, the coupling between the edges leads to an anisotropy in the curvature of the energy surface at the metastable minima. This yields a dynamic mode splitting of the edge modes and affects the attempt switching frequencies. Thus, we elucidate the mechanism with which the magnons in the thermal bath generate the stochastic fluctuations of the magnetization at the edges.

Self-assembly and percolation in magnetic colloids

We study the self-assembly of branching-chain networks and crystals in a binary colloidal system with tunable interactions. The particle positions are extracted from microscope images and order parameters are extracted by image processing and statistical analysis. With these, we construct phase diagrams with respect to particle density, ratio and interaction. In order to draw a more complete picture, we complement the experiments with computer simulations. We establish a region in the phase diagram, where bead ratios and interactions are symmetric, promoting percolated structures.

Emergent anisotropy in magnetic metamaterials

We demonstrate directional dependence of the self-modification of internal mesospin textures in magnetic metamaterials, arising from the coupling of the atomic- and mesoscopic length-scales. Dressing the mesospins in different directions enables the quantification of the degree of texture in the internal magnetization and its impact on the interaction energy of the mesospins. The emerging anisotropy is manifested in a directional dependence of the remanent magnetization with temperature.

Thermal excitations within and among mesospins in artificial spin ice

We provide experimental and numerical evidence for thermal excitations within and among magnetic mesospins, forming artificial spin ice structures. At low temperatures, a decrease in magnetization and increase in susceptibility is observed with increasing temperature, interpreted as an onset of thermal fluctuations of the magnetic texture within the mesospins. At elevated temperatures a pronounced susceptibility peak is observed, related to thermally induced flipping of the mesospins and a collapse of the remanent state. The fluctuations, while occurring at distinct length- and energy-scales, are shown to be tunable by the interaction strength of the mesospins.

Steering light with magnetic textures

We study the steering of visible light using a combination of magneto-optical effects and the reconfigurability of magnetic domains in Yttrium-Iron Garnet films. The spontaneously formed stripe domains are used as a field-controlled optical grating, allowing for active spatiotemporal control of light. We discuss the basic ideas behind the approach and provide a quantitative description of the field dependence of the obtained light patterns. Finally, we calculate and experimentally verify the efficiency of our magneto-optical grating.

Multiple energy-scales in vertex-frustrated mesospin systems

The interplay between topology and energy-hierarchy plays a vital role in the collective magnetic order in artificial ferroic systems. Here we investigate, experimentally, the effect of having one or two activation energies of interacting Ising-like magnetic islands -- mesospins -- in thermalized, vertex-frustrated lattices. The thermally arrested magnetic states of the elements were determined using synchrotron-based magnetic microscopy after cooling the samples from temperatures above the Curie temperature of the material. Statistical analysis of the correlations between mesospins across several length-scales, reveals changes in the magnetic order, reflecting the amount of ground state plaquettes realized for a vertex-frustrated lattice. We show that the latter depends on the presence, or not, of different activation energies.

Direction-sensitive magnetophotonic surface crystal

Nanometer-thin rare-earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloys with precisely controlled compositions and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy are currently in the focus for ultrafast magnetophotonic applications. However, achieving lateral nanoscale dimensions, crucial for potential device downscaling, while maintaining designable optomagnetic functionality and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy is extremely challenging. Here we integrate nanosized Tb$_{18}$Co$_{82}$ ferrimagnetic alloys, having strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, within a gold plasmonic nanoantenna array to design micrometer-scale a magnetophotonic crystal that exhibit abrupt and narrow magneto-optical spectral features that are both magnetic field and light incidence direction controlled. The narrow Fano-type resonance arises through the interference of the individual nanoantenna's surface plasmons and a Rayleigh anomaly of the whole nanoantenna array, in both optical and magneto-optical spectra, which we demonstrate and explain using Maxwell-theory simulations. This robust magnetophotonic crystal opens the way for conceptually new high-resolution light incidence direction sensors, as well as for building blocks for plasmon-assisted all-optical magnetization switching in ferrimagnetic RE-TM alloys.

Temperature induced collapse of spin dimensionality in magnetic metamaterials

Spin and spatial dimensionalities are universal concepts, essential for describing both phase transitions and dynamics in magnetic materials. Lately, these ideas have been adopted to describe magnetic properties of metamaterials, as well as to replicate and explore ensembles of mesospins belonging to different universality classes. Here, we take the next step by investigating magnetic metamaterials not conforming to the conventional framework of continuous phase transitions. Instead of a continuous decrease in the moment with temperature, discrete steps are possible, resulting in a binary transition in the interactions of the elements. The transition is enabled by nucleation and annihilation of vortex cores, shifting topological charges between the interior and the edges of the elements. Consequently, the mesospins can be viewed as shifting their spin dimensionality, from 2 (XY-like) to 0, (vortices) at the transition. The results provide insight into how dynamics at different length-scales couple, which can lead to thermally driven topological transitions in magnetic metamaterials.

Ultrafast demagnetization in a ferrimagnet under electromagnetic field funneling

The quest to improve density, speed and energy efficiency of magnetic memory storage has led to exploration of new ways of optically manipulating magnetism at the ultrafast time scale, in particular in ferrimagnetic alloys. While all-optical magnetization switching is well-established on the femtosecond timescale, lateral nanoscale confinement and thus potential significant reduction of the size of the magnetic element remains an outstanding challenge. Here we employ resonant electromagnetic energy-funneling plasmon nanoantennas to influence the demagnetization dynamics of a ferrimagnetic TbCo alloy thin film. We demonstrate how Ag nanoring-shaped antennas under resonant optical femtosecond pumping reduce the overall magneto-optical response due to demagnetization in the underlying films up to three times compared to non-resonant illumination. We attribute such substantial reduction to the nanoscale confinement of the demagnetization process. This is qualitatively supported by the electromagnetic simulations that strongly evidence the optical energy-funneling to the nanoscale from the nanoantennas into the ferrimagnetic film. This is the first and defining step for reaching deterministic ultrafast all-optical magnetization switching at the nanoscale in such systems, opening a route to develop nanoscale ultrafast magneto-optics.

The effect of confinement on thermally induced fluctuations in nanomagnets

We study the magnetization dynamics in nanomagnets excited by stochastic magnetic fields to mimic temperature in a micromagnetic framework. The effect of confinement arising from the finite size of the structures is investigated, and we visualise the spatial extension of the internal magnon modes. Furthermore, we determine the temperature dependence of the magnon modes, and focus specifically on the low frequency edge modes, which are found to display fluctuations associated with switching between C- and S-states, thus posing an energy barrier. We classify this fluctuating behaviour in three different regimes, and calculate the associated energy barriers using the Arrhenius law.

Enhanced THz emission from spintronic Fe/Pt emitters through crystal growth optimization

We investigate the THz emission characteristics of ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metallic heterostructures, focusing on thin Fe/Pt bilayers. In particular, we report on the impact of optimized crystal growth of the epitaxial Fe layers on the THz emission amplitude and spectral bandwidth. We demonstrate an enhancement of the emitted intensity along with an expansion of the emission bandwidth. Both are related to reduced spin scattering and higher interface transmission. Our work provides a pathway for devicing optimal spintronic THz emitters based on epitaxial Fe. It also highlights how THz emission measurements can be utilized to characterize the changes in out-of-equilibrium spin current dynamics in metallic heterostructures, driven by subtle structural refinement.

Magnetic and all-optical switching properties of amorphous Tb$_x$Co$_{100-x}$ alloys

Amorphous Tb$_{x}$Co$_{100-x}$ magnetic alloys exhibit a list of intriguing properties, such as perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, high magneto-optical activity and magnetization switching using ultrashort optical pulses. Varying the Tb:Co ratio in these alloys allows for tuning properties such as the saturation magnetic moment, coercive field and the performance of the light-induced magnetization switching. In this work, we investigate the magnetic, optical and magneto-optical properties of various Tb$_{x}$Co$_{100-x}$ thin film alloy compositions. We report on the effect the choice of different seeding layers has on the structural and magnetic properties of Tb$_{x}$Co$_{100-x}$ layers. We also demonstrate that for a range of alloys, deposited on fused silica substrates, with Tb content of 24-30 at.$\%$, helicity dependent all-optical switching of magnetization can be achieved, albeit in a multi-shot framework. We explain this property to arise from the helicity-dependent laser induced magnetization on the Co sublattice due to the inverse Faraday effect. Our study provides an insight into material aspects for future potential hybrid magneto-plasmonic TbCo-based architectures.

Collective magnetic dynamics in artificial spin ice probed by AC susceptibility

We report on the study of the thermal dynamics of square artificial spin ice, probed by means of temperature and frequency dependent AC susceptibility. Pronounced influence of the inter-island coupling strength was found on the frequency response of the samples. Through the subsequent analysis of the frequency- and coupling-dependent freezing temperatures, we discuss the phenomenological parameters obtained in the framework of Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law in terms of the samples microscopic features. The high sensitivity and robust signal to noise ratio of AC susceptibility validates the latter as a promising and simple experimental technique for resolving the dynamics and temperature driven dynamics crossovers for the case of artificial spin ice.

Nanoscale magnetophotonics

This Perspective surveys the state-of-the-art and future prospects of science and technology employing the nanoconfined light (nanophotonics and nanoplasmonics) in combination with magnetism. We denote this field broadly as nanoscale magnetophotonics. We include a general introduction to the field and describe the emerging magneto-optical effects in magnetoplasmonic and magnetophotonic nanostructures supporting localized and propagating plasmons. Special attention is given to magnetoplasmonic crystals with transverse magnetization and the associated nanophotonic non-reciprocal effects, and to magneto-optical effects in periodic arrays of nanostructures. We give also an overview of the applications of these systems in biological and chemical sensing, as well as in light polarization and phase control. We further review the area of nonlinear magnetophotonics, the semiconductor spin-plasmonics, and the general principles and applications of opto-magnetism and nano-optical ultrafast control of magnetism and spintronics.

The impact of nanoscale compositional variation on the properties of amorphous alloys

The atomic distribution in amorphous FeZr alloys is found to be close to random, nevertheless, the composition can not be viewed as being homogenous at the nm-scale. The spatial variation of the local composition is identified as the root of the unusual magnetic properties in amorphous Fe$_{1-x}$Zr$_{x}$ alloys. The findings are discussed and generalised with respect to the physical properties of amorphous and crystalline materials.

Impact of the crystal orientation on spin-orbit torques in Fe/Pd bilayers

Spin-orbit torques in ferromagnetic (FM)/non-magnetic (NM) heterostructures offer more energy-efficient means to realize spin-logic devices; however, their strengths are determined by the heterostructure interface. This work examines crystal orientation impact on the spin-orbit torque efficiency in different Fe/Pd bilayer systems. Spin torque ferromagnetic measurements evidence that the damping-like torque efficiency is higher in epitaxial than in polycrystalline bilayer structures while the field-like torque is negligible in all bilayer structures. The strength of the damping-like torque decreases with deterioration of the bilayer epitaxial quality. The present finding provides fresh insight for the enhancement of spin-orbit torques in magnetic heterostructures.

Thickness dependent enhancement of the polar magneto-optic Kerr effect in Co magnetoplasmonic nanostructures

Large surface plasmon polariton assisted enhancement of the magneto-optical activity has been observed in the past, through spectral measurements of the polar Kerr rotation in Co hexagonal antidot arrays. Here, we report a strong thickness dependence, which is unexpected given that the Kerr effect is considered a surface sensitive phenomena. The maximum Kerr rotation was found to be -0.66 degrees for a 100 nm thick sample. This thickness is far above the typical optical penetration depth of a continuous Co film, demonstrating that in the presence of plasmons the critical lengthscales are dramatically altered, and in this case extended. We therefore establish that the plasmon enhanced Kerr effect does not only depend on the in-plane structuring of the sample, but also on the out-of-plane geometrical parameters, which is an important consideration in magnetoplasmonic device design.
