Luneburg lens waveguide networks

We investigate certain configurations of Luneburg lenses that form light propagating and guiding networks. We study single Luneburg lens dynamics and apply the single lens ray tracing solution to various arrangements of multiple lenses. The wave propagating features of the Luneburg lens networks are also verified through direct numerical solutions of Maxwell's equations. We find that Luneburg lenses may form efficient waveguides for light propagation and guiding. The additional presence of nonlinearity improves the focusing characteristics of the networks.

Exceptional Point Dynamics in Photonic Honeycomb Lattices with PT Symmetry

We theoretically investigate the flow of electromagnetic waves in complex honeycomb photonic lattices with local PT symmetries. Such PT structure is introduced via a judicious arrangement of gain or loss across the honeycomb lattice, characterized by a gain/loss parameter γ. We found a new class of conical diffraction phenomena where the formed cone is brighter and travels along the lattice with a transverse speed proportional to Sqrt (γ).

Predicting catastrophes in nonlinear dynamical systems by compressive sensing

An extremely challenging problem of significant interest is to predict catastrophes in advance of their occurrences. We present a general approach to predicting catastrophes in nonlinear dynamical systems under the assumption that the system equations are completely unknown and only time series reflecting the evolution of the dynamical variables of the system are available. Our idea is to expand the vector field or map of the underlying system into a suitable function series and then to use the compressive-sensing technique to accurately estimate the various terms in the expansion. Examples using paradigmatic chaotic systems are provided to demonstrate our idea.

Motion of Wavefunction Zeros in Spin-Boson Systems

In the analytic-Bargmann representation associated with the harmonic oscillator and spin coherent states, the wavefunction as entire complex functions can be factorized in terms of their zeros in a unique way. The Schrödinger equation of motion for the wavefunction is turned to a system of equations for its zeros. The motion of these zeros as a non-linear flow of points is studied and interpreted for linear and non-linear bosonic and spin Hamiltonians. Attention is given to the study of the zeros of the Jaynes-Cummings model and to its finite analoque. Numerical solutions are derived and discussed.
