Localised Horizons and Holographic Thermodynamics: Supercooling in the 1/D Expansion

In holography, four-dimensional confining gauge theories are often modelled by five-dimensional Einstein--scalar gravity by choosing a specific form of the scalar potential. In a large class of non-conformal theories, we show that a predictive structure emerges for the thermal confinement transition by generalising the gravitational dual to $D+1$ dimensions and using a $1/D$ expansion. These results are independent of the details of the scalar potential, hinting towards universality. The black brane geometry dual to the deconfined phase can be analytically constructed due to its effects being localised near the horizon at leading order. The solution does not exist below a minimal temperature $T_{\rm min}$ and the maximum possible supercooling in the transition $ε_{\rm sc} = 1-T_{\rm min}/T_{\rm c}$ is generically suppressed by a factor of $1/D^2$. Remarkably, the maximum supercooling at the leading order is set by the speed of sound in the deconfined phase of the gauge theory at the critical temperature, $ε_{\rm sc}=c_s^2(T_{\rm c})/2$. These predictions agree with explicit calculations in an exponential superpotential, improved holography, and the thermal transition in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang--Mills on a sphere.

Axion Quality Problem: Keep Calm and Baryon

Axion models generically suffer from a severe quality problem when coupled to gravity. In this article we provide a very simple model with a high quality axion. The axion is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the baryon number symmetry, $U(1)_B$, of a new composite sector that breaks $U(1)_B$ spontaneously when it confines. A controlled example is a supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) with $N_c = N_f$. The axion shift symmetry is automatically protected due to the high dimension of the gauge-invariant baryon operator, with the Peccei-Quinn breaking operators arising at dimension $N_c+2$. The standard model gauge group is embedded as a subgroup of the flavor symmetry group of SQCD that has an anomaly with $U(1)_B$, generating the standard coupling with gluons.

Prediction for Maximum Supercooling in SU(N) Confinement Transition

The thermal confinement phase transition (PT) in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory is first-order for $N\geq 3$, with bounce action scaling as $N^2$. Remarkably, lattice data for the action include a small coefficient whose presence likely strongly alters the PT dynamics. We give evidence, utilizing insights from softly-broken SUSY YM models, that the small coefficient originates from a deconfined phase instability just below the critical temperature. We predict the maximum achievable supercooling in $SU(N)$ theories to be a few percent, which can be tested on the lattice. We briefly discuss the potentially significant suppression of the associated cosmological gravitational wave signals.

Dynamics of the Fermion-Rotor System

We explore the dynamics of the fermion-rotor system, a simple impurity model in d=1+1 dimensions that consists of a collection of purely right-moving fermions interacting with a quantum mechanical rotor localised at the origin. This was first introduced by Polchinski as a toy model for monopole-fermion scattering and is surprisingly subtle, with ingoing and outgoing fermions carrying different quantum numbers. We show that the rotor acts as a twist operator in the low-energy theory, changing the quantum numbers of excitations that have previously passed through the origin to ensure scattering consistent with all symmetries. We further show how generalisations of this model with multiple rotors and unequal charges can be viewed as a UV-completion of boundary states for chiral theories, including the well-studied 3450 model. We compute correlation functions between ingoing and outgoing fermions and show that fermions dressed with the rotor degree of freedom act as local operators and create single-particle states, generalising an earlier result obtained in a theory with a single rotor and equal charges. Finally, we point out a mod 2 anomaly in these models that descends from the Witten anomaly in 4d

Supercooled Confinement

We study general properties of confinement phase transitions in the early universe. An observable gravitational wave signal from such transitions requires significant supercooling. However, in almost all understood examples of confining gauge theories the degree of supercooling is too small to give interesting gravitational wave signals. We review and highlight the evidence why supercooling is not generic in confining gauge theories. The exceptions are Randall-Sundrum models which define a strongly coupled gauge theory holographically by a 5D gravitational theory. We construct a simple illustrative model of a 4D gauge theory inspired by features of the Randall-Sundrum model. It is a large-$N$ gauge theory in the conformal window coupled to a weakly coupled scalar field which undergoes a supercooled phase transition that breaks the conformal symmetry and triggers confinement. We show that there are interesting features in the gravitational wave spectra that can carry the imprint of the confining gauge theory.

Higher Axion Strings

We study the minimal requirements to obtain axion strings for axions with exponentially good quality. These ingredients appear in theories where an axion coming from a higher-form gauge field mixes with the phase of a complex scalar field in a situation that resembles higher-groups. The resulting axion is perturbatively massless and inherits a high-quality shift symmetry from the global higher-form symmetry while being compatible with a post-inflationary axion scenario. Due to differences and resemblances with both, extra-dimensional and field theory axions, we call this field the higher axion. To this end, we study a toy model on a 5-dimensional manifold with boundary. The boundary hosts the complex scalar that provides axion strings through standard mechanisms. In addition, we study how these scenarios may arise in heterotic string theory and type II string compactifications.

Monopole-Fermion Scattering and the Solution to the Semiton/Unitarity Puzzle

We study Polchinski's "fermion-rotor system" as an accurate description of charged Weyl fermions scattering on a magnetic monopole core in the limit of zero gauge coupling. Traditionally it was thought such scattering could lead to fractional particle numbers ("semitons"). By direct calculations we show those semitonic processes are in fact free propagation, facilitated by composite fermion-rotor operators interpolating the "forbidden" states, effectively "recovering" both ingoing and outgoing states in every lowest partial wave. Non-semitonic Callan-Rubakov processes are unchanged.

Heavy QCD Axion in $b\to s$ transition: Enhanced Limits and Projections

We study a "heavy" QCD axion whose coupling to the standard model is dominated by $a G \widetilde{G}$ but with $m_a \gg m_πf_π/ f_a$. This is well motivated as it can solve the strong CP problem while evading the axion quality problem. It also poses interesting challenges for its experimental search due to its suppressed couplings to photons and leptons. Such axion with mass around a GeV is kinematically inaccessible or poorly constrained by most experimental probes except B-factories. We study $B \to K a$ transitions as a powerful probe of the heavy QCD axion by performing necessary 2-loop calculations for the first time, together with some improvement on the existing analysis strategy. We find some of the existing limits are enhanced by at least an order of magnitude. We also demonstrate that the bounds are robust against unknown UV physics. For forthcoming data sets of the Belle II experiment, we provide a projection that $f_a$ of a few TeV is within its future reach, which is relevant to the quality problem.

Heavy QCD Axion at Belle II: Displaced and Prompt Signals

The QCD axion is a well-motivated addition to the standard model to solve the strong $C\!P$ problem. If the axion acquires mass dominantly from a hidden sector, it can be as heavy as $O(1)$ GeV, and the decay constant can be as low as $O(100)$ GeV without running into the axion quality problem. We propose new search strategies for such heavy QCD axions at the Belle II experiment, where the axions are expected to be produced via $B\to K a$. We find that a subsequent decay $a\to 3π$ with a displaced vertex leads to a unique signal with essentially no background, and that a dedicated search can explore the range $O(1$-$10)$ TeV of decay-constant values. We also show that $a\to γγ$ can cover a significant portion of currently unexplored region of $150 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 500$ MeV.

A solar origin of the XENON1T excess without stellar cooling problems

Solar interpretations of the recent XENON1T excess events, such as axion or dark photon emissions from the sun, are thought to be at odds with stellar cooling bounds from the horizontal branch stars and red giants. We propose a simple effective field theory of a dark photon in which a $Z_2$ symmetry forbids a single dark photon emission in the dense stars, thereby evading the cooling bounds, while the $Z_2$ is spontaneously broken in the vacuum and sun, thereby explaining the XENON1T excess. The scalar responsible for the $Z_2$ breaking has an extremely flat potential, but the flatness can be maintained under quantum corrections. The UV completion of the EFT generally requires the existence of new electrically charged particles with sub-TeV masses with $O(1)$ couplings to the dark photon, offering the opportunity to test the scenario further and opening a new window into the dark sector in laboratory experiments.

Effective negative specific heat by destabilization of metastable states in dipolar systems

We study dipolarly coupled three dimensional spin systems in both the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles by introducing appropriate numerical methods to determine the microcanonical temperature and by realizing a canonical model of heat bath. In the microcanonical ensemble, we show the existence of a branch of stable antiferromagnetic states in the low energy region. Other metastable ferromagnetic states exist in this region: by externally perturbing them, an effective negative specific heat is obtained. In the canonical ensemble, for low temperatures, the same metastable states are unstable and reach a new branch of more robust metastable states which is distinct from the stable one. Our statistical physics approach allows us to put some order in the complex structure of stable and metastable states of dipolar systems.

Landau-Zener Tunneling of Solitons

A simple mechanical analog describing Landau-Zener tunneling effect is proposed using two weakly coupled chains of nonlinear oscillators with gradually decreasing (first chain) and increasing (second chain) masses. The model allows to investigate nonlinear generalization of Landau-Zener tunneling effect considering soliton propagation and tunneling between the chains. It is shown that soliton tunneling characteristics become drastically dependent on its amplitude in nonlinear regime. The validity of the developed tunneling theory is justified via comparison with direct numerical simulations on oscillator ladder system.
