Indivisibility of electron bubbles in helium

A recent proposal by Maris[1], that single electron bubbles in helium might fission into separate, particle-like entities, does not properly take into account the failure of the adiabatic approximation when, due to tunneling, there is a long electronic time scale. The point along the fission pathway of a photoexcited p-state bubble, where the adiabatic approximation first breaks down, occurs well before the bubble waist has pinched down forming two cavities. In the connected two-lobed geometry, the p- and s-states are strongly mixed by an antisymmetric vibrational mode, and the excitation decays by the mechanism where one lobe collapses while the other expands into the spherical s-state geometry. The extreme pressure jump in a photoexcited bubble leads to shock formation that may halt the elongation even before adiabaticity is compromised. In this case, the photoexcited bubble decays radiatively from the relaxed p-state geometry. [1] H.J. Crystallography and Riemann Surfaces

The level set of an elliptic function is a doubly periodic point set in C. To obtain a wider spectrum of point sets, we consider, more generally, a Riemann surface S immersed in C^2 and its sections (``cuts'') by C. We give S a crystallographic isometry in C^2 by defining a fundamental surface element as a conformal map of triangular domains and S as its extension by reflections in the triangle edges. Our main result concerns the special case of maps of right triangles, with the right angle being a regular point of the map. For this class of maps we show that only seven Riemann surfaces, when cut, form point sets that are discrete in C. Their isometry groups all have a rank-four lattice subgroup, but only three of the corresponding point sets are doubly periodic in C. The remaining surfaces form quasiperiodic point sets closely related to the vertex sets of quasiperiodic tilings. In fact, vertex sets of familiar tilings are recovered in all cases by applying the construction to a piecewise flat approximation of the corresponding Riemann surface. The geometry of point sets formed by cuts of Riemann surfaces is no less ``rigid'' than the geometry determined by a tiling, and has the distinct advantage in having a regular behavior with respect to the complex parameter which specifies the cut.

X-ray phase determination by the principle of minimum charge

When the charge density in a crystal or a quasicrystal is reconstructed from its Fourier modes, the global minimum value of the density is sensitively dependent on the relative phases of the modes. The set of phases that maximizes the value of the global minimum, corresponds, by positivity of the density, to the charge density having the minimum total charge that is consistent with the measured Fourier amplitudes. Phases which minimize the total charge (i.e. the average charge density) also have the property that the lowest minima of the charge density become exactly degenerate and proliferate within the unit cell. The large number of degenerate minima have the effect that density maxima are forced to occupy ever smaller regions of the unit cell. Thus by minimizing charge, the atomicity of the charge density is enhanced as well. Charge minimization applied to simulated crystalline and quasicrystalline diffraction data successfully reproduces the correct phases starting from random initial values.

The Entropy of Square-Free Words

Finite alphabets of at least three letters permit the construction of square-free words of infinite length. We show that the entropy density is strictly positive and derive reasonable lower and upper bounds. Finally, we present an approximate formula which is asymptotically exact with rapid convergence in the number of letters.

Logarithmically slow domain growth in nonrandomly frustrated systems--- A summary of the major results

Here, we summarize the most important results of our study of logarithmically slow growth of domains following a quench in two models without randomness in their Hamiltonians. This is a slightly updated version of a paper to appear in the Proceedings of the 1st Annual Tohwa University International Symposium, Fukuoka, Japan (American Institute of Physics, 1992). It is meant to serve as a brief summary of cond-mat/9204015 for those who do not wish to read all the details contained therein (and don't want to hassle with 2 MBytes of tex/ps files).
