Ferroelectric Polarization Reversal vs Pump Spot Shape

It has recently been shown that the polarization of a ferroelectric can be strongly affected by light pumping or even transiently reversed by mid-IR pumping within a record short subpicosecond timescale. It was then suggested that the reversal of polarization is most likely prevented by the depolarizing field that appears during the process. To minimize the effect of the depolarizing field, I propose to create an elongated domain by choosing a corresponding pump spot shape. I calculate the polarization dynamics for a particular experimental setup with mid-IR pumping and show that the polarization reversal is possible in this case.

Dipole Ordering of Water Molecules in Cordierite: Monte Carlo Simulations

Electric dipoles of water molecules, enclosed singly in regularly spaced nanopores of a cordierite crystal, become ordered at low temperature due to their mutual interaction and show the frequency dependence of their dielectric susceptibility, typical for relaxor ferroelectrics, according to recent experimental data. The corresponding phase transition is accompanied by anomalies in thermodynamic quantities, such as heat capacity and dielectric susceptibility, which are calculated here using the Monte Carlo method, and their agreement the experimental data is discussed. Despite the increase in the correlation length, the partially filled dipole lattice at low temperatures, according to the calculations, does not have long-range order and corresponds to a dipole glass. This simulation gives a microscopical insight into the formation of polar nanoregions in relaxor ferroelectrics and the temperature dependence of their size.

Ultrafast reversal of the ferroelectric polarization by a midinfrared pulse

We calculate the ferroelectric polarization dynamics induced by a femtosecond midinfrared pulse as measured in the recent experiment by R. Mankowsky et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 197601 (2017). It is due to the nonlinear coupling of the excited infrared-active phonon with the ferroelectric mode or to the excitation of the ferroelectric mode itself depending on the pulse frequency. To begin with, we write the LiNbO$_3$ crystal symmetry invariant thermodynamic potential including electric field and nonlinear phonon coupling terms. We solve the equations of motion determined by this potential for phonon coordinates numerically in classical approximation. We explain the transient polarization reversal observed in the experiment by action of the depolarizing electric field which is due to bound charges at the polarization domain boundaries and give a reasonable estimate for its value. We argue that the polarization could be ultimately reversed when this field is screened.
