Symplectic approach to global stability

We present a new approach to the problem of proving global stability, based on symplectic geometry and with a focus on systems with several conserved quantities. We also provide a proof of instability for integrable systems whose momentum map is everywhere regular. Our results take root in the recently proposed notion of a confining function and are motivated by ghost-ridden systems, for whom we put forward the first geometric definition.

Foundations of ghost stability

We present a new method to analytically prove global stability in ghost-ridden dynamical systems. Our proposal encompasses all prior results and consequentially extends them. In particular, we show that stability can follow from a conserved quantity that is unbounded from below, contrary to expectation. Novel examples illustrate all our results. Our findings take root on a careful examination of the literature, here comprehensively reviewed for the first time. This work lays the mathematical basis for ulterior extensions to field theory and quantization, and it constitutes a gateway for inter-disciplinary research in dynamics and integrability.

Constraint characterization and degree of freedom counting in Lagrangian field theory

We present a Lagrangian approach to counting degrees of freedom in first-order field theories. The emphasis is on the systematic attainment of a complete set of constraints. In particular, we provide the first comprehensive procedure to ensure the functional independence of all constraints and discuss in detail the possible closures of the constraint algorithm. We argue degrees of freedom can but need not correspond to physical modes. The appendix comprises fully worked out, physically relevant examples of varying complexity.

(Extended) Proca-Nuevo under the two-dimensional loupe

Recently, two new families of non-linear massive electrodynamics have been proposed: Proca-Nuevo and Extended Proca-Nuevo. We explicitly show that both families are irremediably ghostful in two dimensions. Our calculations indicate the need to revisit the classical consistency of (Extended) Proca-Nuevo in higher dimensions before these settings can be regarded as ghostfree.

Symplectic quantization of multi-field Generalized Proca electrodynamics

We explicitly carry out the symplectic quantization of a family of multi-field Generalized Proca (GP) electrodynamics theories. In the process, we provide an independent derivation of the so-called secondary constraint enforcing relations -- consistency conditions that significantly restrict the allowed interactions in multi-field settings already at the classical level. Additionally, we unveil the existence of quantum consistency conditions, which apply in both single- and multi-field GP scenarios. Our newly found conditions imply that not all classically well-defined (multi-)GP theories are amenable to quantization. The extension of our results to the most general multi-GP class is conceptually straightforward, albeit algebraically cumbersome.

A Lagrangian constraint analysis of first order classical field theories with an application to gravity

We present a method that is optimized to explicitly obtain all the constraints and thereby count the propagating degrees of freedom in (almost all) manifestly first order classical field theories. Our proposal uses as its only inputs a Lagrangian density and the identification of the a priori independent field variables it depends on. This coordinate-dependent, purely Lagrangian approach is complementary to and in perfect agreement with the related vast literature. Besides, generally overlooked technical challenges and problems derived from an incomplete analysis are addressed in detail. The theoretical framework is minutely illustrated in the Maxwell, Proca and Palatini theories for all finite $d\geq 2$ spacetime dimensions. Our novel analysis of Palatini gravity constitutes a noteworthy set of results on its own. In particular, its computational simplicity is visible, as compared to previous Hamiltonian studies. We argue for the potential value of both the method and the given examples in the context of generalized Proca and their coupling to gravity. The possibilities of the method are not exhausted by this concrete proposal.

The complete theory of Maxwell and Proca fields

We present the most general ghost-free classical Lagrangian containing first-order derivatives and describing interacting real Abelian spin-one fields on Minkowski spacetime. We study both massive Proca and massless Maxwell fields and allow for a non-linear realization of mass, in the form of derivative self-interactions. Within this context, our construction notoriously extends the existing literature, which is limited to the case of a single Proca field and to multiple interacting Proca fields in the presence of a global rotational symmetry. In the limit of a single Proca field, we reproduce the known healthy interaction terms. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure ghost-freedom in any multi-field setup. We observe that, in general, the said conditions are not satisfied by the rotationally symmetric multi-Proca interactions suggested so far, which implies that they propagate ghosts. Our theory admits a plethora of applications in a wide range of subjects. For illustrative purposes, we provide concrete proposals in holographic condensed matter and black hole physics.

The Maxwell-Proca theory: definition and construction

We present a systematic construction of the most general first order Lagrangian describing an arbitrary number of interacting Maxwell and Proca fields on Minkowski spacetime. To this aim, we first formalize the notion of a Proca field, in analogy to the well known Maxwell field. Our definition allows for a non-linear realization of the Proca mass, in the form of derivative self-interactions. Consequently, we consider so-called generalized Proca/vector Galileons. We explicitly demonstrate the ghost-freedom of this complete Maxwell-Proca theory by obtaining its constraint algebra. We find that, when multiple Proca fields are present, their interactions must fulfill non-trivial differential relations in order to ensure the propagation of the correct number of degrees of freedom. These relations had so far been overlooked, which means previous multi-Proca proposals generically contain ghosts. This is a companion paper to arXiv:1905.06968 [hep-th]. It puts on a solid footing the theory there introduced.

Born-Oppenheimer Quantization of the Matrix Model for $\mathcal{N}=1$ super-Yang-Mills

We construct a quantum mechanical matrix model that approximates $\mathcal{N}=1$ super-Yang-Mills on $S^3\times\mathbb{R}$. We do so by pulling back the set of left-invariant connections of the gauge bundle onto the real superspace, with the spatial $\mathbb{R}^3$ compactified to $S^3$. We quantize the $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(2)$ matrix model in the weak-coupling limit using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and find that different superselection sectors emerge for the effective gluon dynamics in this regime, reminiscent of different phases of the full quantum theory. We demonstrate that the Born-Oppenheimer quantization is indeed compatible with supersymmetry, albeit in a subtle manner. In fact, we can define effective supercharges that relate the different sectors of the matrix model's Hilbert space. These effective supercharges have a different definition in each phase of the theory.

A companion to "Knot invariants and M-theory I'' [arXiv:1608.05128]: proofs and derivations

We construct two distinct yet related M-theory models that provide suitable frameworks for the study of knot invariants. We then focus on the four-dimensional gauge theory that follows from appropriately compactifying one of these M-theory models. We show that this theory has indeed all required properties to host knots. Our analysis provides a unifying picture of the various recent works that attempt an understanding of knot invariants using techniques of four-dimensional physics. This is a companion paper to arXiv:1608.05128, covering all but section 3.3. It presents a detailed mathematical derivation of the main results there, as well as additional material. Among the new insights, those related to supersymmetry and the topological twist are highlighted. This paper offers an alternative, complementary formulation of the contents in~\cite{Dasgupta:2016rhc}, but is self-contained and can be read independently.

BRST Symmetry: Boundary Conditions and Edge States in QED

In manifolds with spatial boundary, BRST formalism can be used to quantize gauge theories. We show that, in a $U(1)$ gauge theory, only a subset of all the boundary conditions allowed by the self-adjointness of the Hamiltonian preserves BRST symmetry. Hence, the theory can be quantized using BRST formalism only when that subset of boundary conditions is considered. We also show that for such boundary conditions, there exist fermionic states which are localized near the boundary.

Improvements to the Froissart bound from AdS/CFT

In this paper we consider the issue of the Froissart bound on the high energy behaviour of total cross sections. This bound, originally derived using principles of analyticity of scattering amplitudes, is seen to be satisfied by all the available experimental data on total hadronic cross sections. At strong coupling, gauge/gravity duality has been used to provide some insights into this behaviour. In this work, we find the subleading terms to the so-derived Froissart bound from AdS/CFT. We find that a $(\ln \frac{s}{s_0})$ term is obtained, with a negative coefficient. We see that the fits to the currently available data confirm improvement in the fits due to the inclusion of such a term, with the appropriate sign.

Monopoles, Dirac operator and index theory for fuzzy ${SU(3)}/({U(1)\times U(1)})$

The intersection of the 10-dimensional fuzzy conifold $Y_F^{10}$ with $S^5_F \times S^5_F$ is the compact 8-dimensional fuzzy space $X_F^8$. We show that $X_F^8$ is (the analogue of) a principal $U(1)\times U(1)$ bundle over fuzzy ${SU(3)}/({U(1) \times U(1)}) \left(\equiv\mathcal{M}^6_F\right)$. We construct $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ using the Gell-Mann matrices by adapting Schwinger's construction. The space $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ is of relevance in higher dimensional quantum Hall effect and matrix models of $D$-branes. Further we show that the sections of the monopole bundle can be expressed in the basis of $SU(3)$ eigenvectors. We construct the Dirac operator on $\mathcal{M}_F^6$ from the Ginsparg-Wilson algebra on this space. Finally, we show that the index of the Dirac operator correctly reproduces the known results in the continuum.
