Going beyond Top EFT

We present a new way to interpret Top Standard Model measurements going beyond the SMEFT framework. Instead of the usual paradigm in Top EFT, where the main effects come from tails in momenta distributions, we propose an interpretation in terms of new physics which only shows up at loop-level. The effects of these new states, which can be lighter than required within the SMEFT, appear as distinctive structures at high momenta, but may be suppressed at the tails of distributions. As an illustration of this phenomena, we present the explicit case of a UV model with a $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetry, including a Dark Matter candidate and a top-partner. This simple UV model reproduces the main features of this class of signatures, particularly a momentum-dependent form factor with more structure than the SMEFT. As the new states can be lighter than in SMEFT, we explore the interplay between the reinterpretation of direct searches for colored states and Dark Matter, and Top measurements made by ATLAS and CMS in the differential $t \bar t$ final state. We also compare our method with what one would expect using the SMEFT reinterpretation, finding that using the full loop information provides a better discriminating power.

Exploring the political pulse of a country using data science tools

In this paper we illustrate the use of Data Science techniques to analyse complex human communication. In particular, we consider tweets from leaders of political parties as a dynamical proxy to political programmes and ideas. We also study the temporal evolution of their contents as a reaction to specific events. We analyse levels of positive and negative sentiment in the tweets using new tools adapted to social media. We also train an Artificial Intelligence to recognise the political affiliation of a tweet. The AI is able to predict the origin of the tweet with a precision in the range of 71-75\%, and the political leaning (left or right) with a precision of around 90\%. This study is meant to be viewed as a proof-of-concept of interdisciplinary nature, at the interface between Data Science and political analysis.

Exploring SMEFT in VH with Machine Learning

In this paper we study the use of Machine Learning techniques to exploit kinematic information in VH, the production of a Higgs in association with a massive vector boson. We parametrise the effect of new physics in terms of the SMEFT framework. We find that the use of a shallow neural network allows us to dramatically increase the sensitivity to deviations in VH respect to previous estimates. We also discuss the relation between the usual measures of performance in Machine Learning, such as AUC or accuracy, with the more adept measure of Asimov significance. This relation is particularly relevant when parametrising systematic uncertainties. Our results show the potential of incorporating Machine Learning techniques to the SMEFT studies using the current datasets.

Displaced Vertices from Pseudo-Dirac Dark Matter

Displaced vertices are relatively unusual signatures for dark matter searches at the LHC. We revisit the model of pseudo-Dirac dark matter (pDDM), which can accommodate the correct relic density, evade direct detection constraints, and generically provide observable collider signatures in the form of displaced vertices. We use this model as a benchmark to illustrate the general techniques involved in the analysis, the complementarity between monojet and displaced vertex searches, and provide a comprehensive study of the current bounds and prospective reach.

Updated Global SMEFT Fit to Higgs, Diboson and Electroweak Data

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have recently released significant new data on Higgs and diboson production in LHC Run 2. Measurements of Higgs properties have improved in many channels, while kinematic information for $h \to γγ$ and $h \to ZZ$ can now be more accurately incorporated in fits using the STXS method, and $W^+ W^-$ diboson production at high $p_T$ gives new sensitivity to deviations from the Standard Model. We have performed an updated global fit to precision electroweak data, $W^+W^-$ measurements at LEP, and Higgs and diboson data from Runs 1 and 2 of the LHC in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), allowing all coefficients to vary across the combined dataset, and present the results in both the Warsaw and SILH operator bases. We exhibit the improvement in the constraints on operator coefficients provided by the LHC Run 2 data, and discuss the correlations between them. We also explore the constraints our fit results impose on several models of physics beyond the Standard Model, including models that contribute to the operator coefficients at the tree level and stops in the MSSM that contribute via loops.

Sterile Neutrino portal to Dark Matter II: Exact Dark symmetry

We analyze a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a dark sector composed of a scalar and a fermion, both singlets under the SM gauge group but charged under a dark sector symmetry group. Sterile neutrinos, which are singlets under both groups, mediate the interactions between the dark sector and the SM particles, and generate masses for the active neutrinos via the seesaw mechanism. We explore the parameter space region where the observed Dark Matter relic abundance is determined by the annihilation into sterile neutrinos, both for fermion and scalar Dark Matter particles. The scalar Dark Matter case provides an interesting alternative to the usual Higgs portal scenario. We also study the constraints from direct Dark Matter searches and the prospects for indirect detection via sterile neutrino decays to leptons, which may be able to rule out Dark Matter masses below and around 100 GeV.

Sterile neutrino portal to Dark Matter I: The $U(1)_{B-L}$ case

In this paper we explore the possibility that the sterile neutrino and Dark Matter sectors in the Universe have a common origin. We study the consequences of this assumption in the simple case of coupling the dark sector to the Standard Model via a global $U(1)_{B-L}$, broken down spontaneously by a dark scalar. This dark scalar provides masses to the dark fermions and communicates with the Higgs via a Higgs portal coupling. We find an interesting interplay between Dark Matter annihilation to dark scalars - the CP-even that mixes with the Higgs and the CP-odd which becomes a Goldstone boson, the Majoron - and heavy neutrinos, as well as collider probes via the coupling to the Higgs. Moreover, Dark Matter annihilation into sterile neutrinos and its subsequent decay to gauge bosons and quarks, charged leptons or neutrinos lead to indirect detection signatures which are close to current bounds on the gamma ray flux from the galactic center and dwarf galaxies.

Doubling Up on Supersymmetry in the Higgs Sector

We explore the possibility that physics at the TeV scale possesses approximate $N = 2$ supersymmetry, which is reduced to the $N=1$ minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) at the electroweak scale. This doubling of supersymmetry modifies the Higgs sector of the theory, with consequences for the masses, mixings and couplings of the MSSM Higgs bosons, whose phenomenological consequences we explore in this paper. The mass of the lightest neutral Higgs boson $h$ is independent of $\tan β$ at the tree level, and the decoupling limit is realized whatever the values of the heavy Higgs boson masses. Radiative corrections to the top quark and stop squarks dominate over those due to particles in $N=2$ gauge multiplets. We assume that these radiative corrections fix $m_h \simeq 125$ GeV, whatever the masses of the other neutral Higgs bosons $H, A$, a scenario that we term the $h$2MSSM. Since the $H, A$ bosons decouple from the $W$ and $Z$ bosons in the $h$2MSSM at tree level, only the LHC constraints on $H, A$ and $H^\pm$ couplings to fermions are applicable. These and the indirect constraints from LHC measurements of $h$ couplings are consistent with $m_A \gtrsim 200$ GeV for $\tan β\in (2, 8)$ in the $h$2MSSM.

ALPs at Colliders

New pseudo-scalars, often called axion-like particles (ALPs), abound in model-building and are often associated with the breaking of a new symmetry. Traditional searches and indirect bounds are limited to light axions, typically in or below the KeV range for ALPs coupled to photons. We present collider bounds on ALPs from mono-$γ$, tri-$γ$ and mono-jet searches in a model independent fashion, as well as the prospects for the LHC and future machines. We find that they are complementary to existing searches, as they are sensitive to heavier ALPs and have the capability to cover an otherwise inaccessible region of parameter space. We also show that, assuming certain model dependent correlations between the ALP coupling to photons and gluons as well as considering the validity of the effective description of ALP interactions, mono-jet searches are in fact more suitable and effective in indirectly constraining ALP scenarios.

NSUSY fits

We perform a global fit to Higgs signal-strength data in the context of light stops in Natural SUSY. In this case, the Wilson coefficients of the higher dimensional operators mediating g g -> h and h -> γγ, given by c_g, c_γ, are related by c_g = 3 (1 + 3 α_s/(2 π)) c_γ/8. We examine this predictive scenario in detail, combining Higgs signal-strength constraints with recent precision measurements of m_W, b-> s γconstraints and direct collider bounds on weak scale SUSY, finding regions of parameter space that are consistent with all of these constraints. However it is challenging for the allowed parameter space to reproduce the observed Higgs mass value with sub-TeV stops. We discuss some of the direct stop discovery prospects and show how global Higgs fits can be used to exclude light stop parameter space difficult to probe by direct collider searches. We determine the current status of such indirect exclusions and estimate their reach by the end of the 8 TeV LHC run.
