Stokes waves with constant vorticity: I. numerical computation

Periodic traveling waves are numerically computed in a constant vorticity flow subject to the force of gravity. The Stokes wave problem is formulated via a conformal mapping as a nonlinear pseudo-differential equation, involving a periodic Hilbert transform for a strip, and solved by the Newton-GMRES method. It works well with a fast Fourier transform and is more effective than a boundary integral method. The result is in excellent agreement, qualitatively and quantitatively, with earlier ones. For strong positive vorticity, in the finite or infinite depth, overhanging profiles are found as the steepness increases and tend to a touching wave, whose profile self-intersects somewhere along the trough line, trapping an air bubble; the numerical solutions become unphysical as the steepness increases further and make a gap in the wave speed versus steepness plane; a touching wave then takes over and the physical solutions follow in the wave speed versus steepness plane until they ultimately tend to an extreme wave, which exhibits a sharp corner at the crest. Overhanging waves of nearly maximum heights are found to approach rigid body rotation of a fluid disk as the strength of positive vorticity increases.

Oscillation estimates of eigenfunctions via the combinatorics of noncrossing partitions

We study oscillations in the eigenfunctions for a fractional Schrödinger operator on the real line. An argument in the spirit of Courant's nodal domain theorem applies to an associated local problem in the upper half plane and provides a bound on the number of nodal domains for the extensions of the eigenfunctions. Using the combinatorial properties of noncrossing partitions, we turn the nodal domain bound into an estimate for the number of sign changes in the eigenfunctions. We discuss applications in the periodic setting and the Steklov problem on planar domains.

Wave breaking in the Whitham equation

We prove wave breaking --- bounded solutions with unbounded derivatives --- in the nonlinear nonlocal equation which combines the dispersion relation of water waves and a nonlinearity of the shallow water equations, provided that the slope of the initial datum is sufficiently negative, whereby we solve a Whitham's conjecture. We extend the result to equations of Korteweg-de Vries type for a range of fractional dispersion.

Shallow water models with constant vorticity

We modify the nonlinear shallow water equations, the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the Whitham equation, to permit constant vorticity, and examine wave breaking, or the lack thereof. By wave breaking, we mean that the solution remains bounded but its slope becomes unbounded in finite time. We show that a solution of the vorticity-modified shallow water equations breaks if it carries an increase of elevation; the breaking time decreases to zero as the size of vorticity increases. We propose a full-dispersion shallow water model, which combines the dispersion relation of water waves and the nonlinear shallow water equations in the constant vorticity setting, and which extends the Whitham equation to permit bidirectional propagation. We show that its small amplitude and periodic traveling wave is unstable to long wavelength perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value, and stable otherwise, similarly to the Benjamin-Feir instability in the irrotational setting; the critical wave number grows unboundedly large with the size of vorticity. The result agrees with that from a multiple scale expansion of the physical problem. We show that vorticity considerably alters the modulational stability and instability in the presence of the effects of surface tension.

Modulational instability in the full-dispersion Camassa-Holm equation

We determine the stability and instability of a sufficiently small and periodic traveling wave to long wavelength perturbations, for a nonlinear dispersive equation which extends a Camassa-Holm equation to include all the dispersion of water waves and the Whitham equation to include nonlinearities of medium amplitude waves. In the absence of the effects of surface tension, the result qualitatively agrees with the Benjamin-Feir instability of a Stokes wave. In the presence of the effects of surface tension, it qualitatively agrees with those from formal asymptotic expansions of the physical problem and it improves upon that for the Whitham equation, correctly predicting the limit of strong surface tension. We discuss the modulational stability and instability in the Camassa-Holm equation and related models.

Norm inflation for equations of KdV type with fractional dispersion

We demonstrate norm inflation for nonlinear nonlocal equations, which extend the Korteweg-de Vries equation to permit fractional dispersion, in the periodic and non-periodic settings. That is, an initial datum is smooth and arbitrarily small in a Sobolev space, but the solution becomes arbitrarily large in the Sobolev space after an arbitrarily short time.

Wave breaking in a shallow water model

We prove wave breaking --- bounded solutions with unbounded derivatives --- in the nonlinear nonlocal equations which combine the dispersion relation of water waves and the nonlinear shallow water equations, and which generalize the Whitham equation to permit bidirectional wave propagation, provided that the slope of the initial data is sufficiently negative.

Modulational instability in a full-dispersion shallow water model

We propose a shallow water model which combines the dispersion relation of water waves and the Boussinesq equations, and which extends the Whitham equation to permit bidirectional propagation. We establish that its sufficiently small, periodic wave train is spectrally unstable to long wavelength perturbations, provided that the wave number is greater than a critical value, like the Benjamin-Feir instability of a Stokes wave. We verify that the asso- ciated linear operator possesses infinitely many collisions of purely imaginary eigenvalues, but they do not contribute to instability away from the origin in the spectral plane to the leading order in the amplitude parameter. We discuss the effects of surface tension on the modulational instability. The results agree with those from formal asymptotic expansions and numerical computations for the physical problem.

Modulational instability in nonlinear nonlocal equations of regularized long wave type

We study the stability and instability of periodic traveling waves in the vicinity of the origin in the spectral plane, for equations of Benjamin- Bona-Mahony (BBM) and regularized Boussinesq types permitting nonlocal dispersion. We extend recent results for equations of Korteweg-de Vries type and derive modulational instability indices as functions of the wave number of the underlying wave. We show that a sufficiently small, periodic traveling wave of the BBM equation is spectrally unstable to long wavelength perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value and a sufficiently small, periodic traveling wave of the regularized Boussinesq equation is stable to square integrable perturbations.

Pressure transfer functions for interfacial fluid problems

We make a consistent derivation, from the governing equations, of the pressure transfer function in the small-amplitude Stokes wave regime and the hydrostatic approximation in the small-amplitude solitary water wave regime, in the presence of a background shear flow. The results agree with the well-known formulae in the zero vorticity case, but they incorporate the effects of vorticity through solutions to the Rayleigh equation. We extend the results to permit continuous density stratification and to internal waves between two constant-density fluids. Several examples are discussed.

On the recovery of traveling water waves with vorticity from the pressure at the bed

We propose higher-order approximation formulae recovering the surface elevation from the pressure at the bed and the background shear flow for small-amplitude Stokes and solitary water waves. They offer improvements over the pressure transfer function and the hydrostatic approximation. The formulae compare reasonably well with asymptotic approximations of the exact relation between the pressure at the bed and the surface wave in the zero vorticity case, but they incorporate the effects of vorticity through solutions of the Rayleigh equation. Several examples are discussed.

Modulational Instability in the Whitham Equation with Surface Tension and Vorticity

We study modulational stability and instability in the Whitham equation, combining the dispersion relation of water waves and a nonlinearity of the shallow water equations, and modified to permit the effects of surface tension and constant vorticity. When the surface tension coefficient is large, we show that a periodic traveling wave of sufficiently small amplitude is unstable to long wavelength perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value, and stable otherwise, similarly to the Benjamin-Feir instability of gravity waves. In the case of weak surface tension, we find intervals of stable and unstable wave numbers, whose boundaries are associated with the extremum of the group velocity, the resonance between the first and second harmonics, the resonance between long and short waves, and a resonance between dispersion and the nonlinearity. For each constant vorticity we show that a periodic traveling wave of sufficiently small amplitude is unstable if the wave number is greater than a critical value, and stable otherwise. Moreover it can be made stable for a sufficiently large vorticity. The results agree with those based upon numerical computations or formal multiple-scale expansions for the physical problem.

Stability of Periodic Traveling Waves for Nonlinear Dispersive Equations

We consider the stability and instability of periodic travling waves for Korteweg-de Vries type equations with fractional dispersion and other nonlinear dispersive equations. We establish that a constrained minimizer for the related variational problem is nonlinearly stable to period preserving perturbations. We also discuss when the associated linearized equation admits exponentially growing solutions. The proof utilizes the variational structure of the equation.

Modulational Instability in Equations of KdV Type

It is a matter of experience that nonlinear waves in dispersive media, propagating primarily in one direction, may appear periodic in small space and time scales, but their characteristics --- amplitude, phase, wave number, etc. --- slowly vary in large space and time scales. In the 1970's, Whitham developed an asymptotic (WKB) method to study the effects of small "modulations" on nonlinear periodic wave trains. Since then, there has been a great deal of work aiming at rigorously justifying the predictions from Whitham's formal theory. We discuss recent advances in the mathematical understanding of the dynamics, in particular, the instability of slowly modulated wave trains for nonlinear dispersive equations of KdV type.

Modulational Instability in the Whitham Equation for Water Waves

We show that periodic traveling waves with sufficiently small amplitudes of the Whitham equation, which incorporates the dispersion relation of surface water waves and the nonlinearity of the shallow water equations, are spectrally unstable to long wavelengths perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value, bearing out the Benjamin-Feir instability of Stokes waves; they are spectrally stable to square integrable perturbations otherwise. The proof involves a spectral perturbation of the associated linearized operator with respect to the Floquet exponent and the small amplitude parameter. We extend the results to related, nonlinear dispersive equations.

Modulational instability and variational structure

We study the modulational instability of periodic traveling waves for a class of Hamiltonian systems in one spatial dimension. We examine how the Jordan block structure of the associated linearized operator bifurcates for small values of the Floquet exponent to derive a criterion governing instability to long wavelengths perturbations in terms of the kinetic and potential energies, the momentum, the mass of the underlying wave, and their derivatives. The dispersion operator of the equation is allowed to be nonlocal, for which Evans function techniques may not be applicable. We illustrate the results by discussing analytically and numerically equations of Korteweg-de Vries type.
