Method to identify parent Hamiltonians for trial states

We describe a general method to identify exact, local parent Hamiltonians for trial states like quantum Hall or spin liquid states, which we have used extensively during the past decade. It can be used to identify exact parent Hamiltonians, either directly or via the construction of simpler annihilation operators from which a parent Hamiltonian respecting all the required symmetries can be constructed. Most remarkably, however, the method provides approximate parent Hamiltonians whenever an exact solution is not available within the space of presumed interaction terms.

Laughlin states and their quasi-particle excitations on the torus

We provide a full derivation of Laughlin's Jastrow-type wave functions for quantized Hall states subject to periodic boundary conditions using an operator formalism. The construction includes the quasi-hole and the technically more challenging quasi-electron excitation, which was left as an open problem in the classic paper by Haldane and Rezayi [Phys. Rev. B 31, 2529 (1985)].

The 1D Ising model and topological order in the Kitaev chain

We elaborate on the topological order in the Kitaev chain, a p-wave superconductor with nearest-neighbor pairing amplitude equal to the hopping term Delta=t, and chemical potential mu=0. In particular, we write out the explicit eigenstates of the open chain in terms of fermion operators, and show that the states as well as their energy eigenvalues are formally equivalent to those of an Ising chain. The models are physically different, as the topological order in the Kitaev chain corresponds to conventional order in the Ising model.
