Photon Efficiency of High-Dimensional Quantum Key Distribution

We investigate entanglement-based quantum key distribution protocols, with particular emphasis on their efficiency under realistic conditions of satellite quantum communications, where performance is limited by the low power of a received signal and background radiation. We focus on scenarios where each photon pair is used to encode multiple qubits in order to optimally utilize the weak signal. By optimizing over the source intensity and the number of encoded qubits we study the theoretical information limit for the QKD efficiency. We show that the optimal efficiency is attained for finite entangled photons pair production probability which is in contrast to conventional communication efficiency maximized in the limit of vanishing signal strength. The multiqubit encoding can enhance the secret key rate by up to an order of magnitude compared to single-qubit schemes.

Nontrivial Aharonov-Bohm effect and alternating dispersion of magnons in cone-state ferromagnetic rings

Soft magnetic dots in the form of thin rings have unique topological properties. They can be in a vortex state with no vortex core. Here, we study the magnon modes of such systems both analytically and numerically. In an external magnetic field, magnetic rings are characterized by easy-cone magnetization and shows a giant splitting of doublets for modes with the opposite value of the azimuthal mode quantum number. The effect of the splitting can be refereed as a magnon analog of the topology-induced Aharonov-Bohm effect. For this we develop an analytical theory to describe the non-monotonic dependence of the mode frequencies on the azimuthal mode number, influenced by the balance between the local exchange and non-local dipole interactions.

Nonlinear spin dynamics of ferromagnetic ring in the vortex state and its application for spin-transfer nano-oscillator

We study a nonlinear spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic ring in a vortex state induced by the spin-polarized current. We also suggest to use the ferromagnetic ring as a free layer of a coreless vortex spin-transfer nano-oscillator. The calculated working frequency is about several GHz, that is much higher than the gyromode frequency of the disk-based vortex oscillator. The response of the vortex-state ring to the spin-polarized current has hysteretic behavior with the reasonable values of the thresholds current densities: ignition threshold is about $10^{8} \text{A}\text{cm}^{-2}$, and elimination current to maintain the oscillations has much lower values about $10^{6} \text{A} \text{cm}^{-2}$. The output signal can be extracted by the help of the inverse spin Hall effect or by the giant magnetoresistance. The output electromotive force averaged over all sample vanishes, and we suggest to use a ferromagnetic ring or disk in a vortex state as a GMR analyzer. For an inverse spin Hall analyser we advise to use two heavy metals with different signs of Spin-Hall angle. The ring-based STNO is supposed to increase the areas of practical application of the STNOs.

Analytic density of states of two-dimensional Chern insulator

We present analytic expressions for the density of states and its consistent derivation for the two-dimensional Qi-Wu-Zhang (QWZ) Hamiltonian, a generic model for the Chern topological insulators of class A. This density of states is expressed in terms of elliptical integrals. We discuss and plot special cases of the dispersion relations and the corresponding densities of states. Spectral moments are also presented. The exact formulae ought to be useful in determining physical properties of the non-interacting Chern insulators and within the dynamical mean-field theory for interacting fermions with the QWZ Hamiltonian in the non-interacting limit.
