Foliated Open Books

This paper introduces a new type of open book decomposition for a contact three-manifold with a specified characteristic foliation $\mathcal{F}_\xi$ on its boundary. These \textit{foliated open books} offer a finer tool for studying contact manifolds with convex boundary than existing models, as the boundary foliation carries more data than the dividing set. In addition to establishing fundamental results about the uniqueness and existence of foliated open books, we carefully examine their relationship with the partial open books introduced by Honda-Kazez-Matic. Foliated open books have user-friendly cutting and gluing properties, and they arise naturally as submanifolds of classical open books for closed three-manifolds. We define three versions of foliated open books (embedded, Morse, and abstract), and we prove the equivalence of these models as well as a Giroux Correspondence which characterizes the foliated open books associated to a fixed triple $(M, \xi, \mathcal{F})$.

A self-pairing theorem for tangle Floer homology

We show that for a tangle $T$ with $-\partial^0T \cong \partial^1 T$ the Hochschild homology of the tangle Floer homology $\widetilde{\mathit{CT}}(T)$ is equivalent to the link Floer homology of the closure $T' = T/(-\partial^0T \sim \partial^1 T)$ of the tangle, linked with the tangle axis. In addition, we show that the action of the braid group on tangle Floer homology is faithful.

Combinatorial tangle Floer homology

In this paper we extend the idea of bordered Floer homology to knots and links in $S^3$: Using a specific Heegaard diagram, we construct gluable combinatorial invariants of tangles in $S^3$, $D^3$ and $I\times S^2$. The special case of $S^3$ gives back a stabilized version of knot Floer homology.

On the equivalence of Legendrian and transverse invariants in knot Floer homology

Using the grid diagram formulation of knot Floer homology, Ozsvath, Szabo and Thurston defined an invariant of transverse knots in the tight contact 3-sphere. Shortly afterwards, Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz and Szabo defined an invariant of transverse knots in arbitrary contact 3-manifolds using open book decompositions. It has been conjectured that these invariants agree where they are both defined. We prove this fact by defining yet another invariant of transverse knots, showing that this third invariant agrees with the two mentioned above.

Legendrian and transverse twist knots

In 1997, Chekanov gave the first example of a Legendrian nonsimple knot type: the $m(5_2)$ knot. Epstein, Fuchs, and Meyer extended his result by showing that there are at least $n$ different Legendrian representatives with maximal Thurston--Bennequin number of the twist knot $K_{-2n}$ with crossing number $2n+1$. In this paper we give a complete classification of Legendrian and transverse representatives of twist knots. In particular, we show that $K_{-2n}$ has exactly $\lceil\frac{n^2}2\rceil$ Legendrian representatives with maximal Thurston--Bennequin number, and $\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$ transverse representatives with maximal self-linking number. Our techniques include convex surface theory, Legendrian ruling invariants, and Heegaard Floer homology.

On invariants for Legendrian knots

Suppose that L is a null--homologous Legendrian knot in a contact 3--manifold. We determine the connection between the sutured invariant of the complement of L and the Legendrian invariant defined by Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz and Szabo. In particular, we derive a vanishing theorem for the Legendrian invariant in the presence of Giroux torsion in the complement of the knot, and reprove several known properties of the Legendrian invariant from this perspective.
