High Speed Network Processing for Scientific Computing in the Open Cloud Testbed

This paper presents an FPGA-based SmartNIC architecture designed to address critical network challenges in data-intensive scientific computing. As scientific workflows increasingly demand high-bandwidth data movement and real-time monitoring across wide-area networks, the Open Cloud Testbed (OCT) provides an ideal platform for investigating in-network processing solutions at line rate. Our approach focuses on implementing network visibility, optimization, and orchestration capabilities through FPGA acceleration. The proposed system leverages P4-programmable data-plane functions to support packet parsing, marking, telemetry extraction, traffic steering, and machine learning inference, all without requiring host CPU intervention or modifications to application servers. As a concrete example, our framework integrates the SciTags standard, which enables associating network traffic with scientific context through packet marking. We implement a high-performance network bridge that counts packets by their SciTag values, as identified in the IPv6 Flow Label. Experimental evaluation on AMD U280 FPGAs in OCT demonstrates the feasibility of this approach, showing imperceptible processing latency and line-rate packet handling, while accurately monitoring scientific data flows.

Operational Experience and R&D results using the Google Cloud for High Energy Physics in the ATLAS experiment

The ATLAS experiment at CERN relies on a worldwide distributed computing Grid infrastructure to support its physics program at the Large Hadron Collider. ATLAS has integrated cloud computing resources to complement its Grid infrastructure and conducted an R&D program on Google Cloud Platform. These initiatives leverage key features of commercial cloud providers: lightweight configuration and operation, elasticity and availability of diverse infrastructure. This paper examines the seamless integration of cloud computing services as a conventional Grid site within the ATLAS workflow management and data management systems, while also offering new setups for interactive, parallel analysis. It underscores pivotal results that enhance the on-site computing model and outlines several R&D projects that have benefited from large-scale, elastic resource provisioning models. Furthermore, this study discusses the impact of cloud-enabled R\&D projects in three domains: accelerators and AI/ML, ARM CPUs and columnar data analysis techniques.

Exotic Higgs Decays

Exotic decays of the Standard Model-like Higgs boson into beyond-the-Standard Model particles are predicted in a wide range of well-motivated theories. The enormous samples of Higgs bosons that have been and will be produced at the Large Hadron Collider thus constitute one of the key discovery opportunities at that facility, particularly in the upcoming high-statistics high-luminosity run. Here we review recent theoretical work on models that predict or accommodate exotic Higgs decays, the status of current experimental searches, and look forward to future capabilities at dedicated Higgs factories and beyond.

W and Z Boson Production Cross Section Measurements in ATLAS

The electroweak boson inclusive production cross sections and their ratios are described in the electron and muon decay channels. The observation of W and Z bosons in the tau decay channel is also presented. The data from pp collisions at 7 TeV were collected during 2010 using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and the results are compared to predictions at NNLO in perturbative QCD.
