A Covariant Holographic Entanglement Entropy Proposal

With an aim towards understanding the time-dependence of entanglement entropy in generic quantum field theories, we propose a covariant generalization of the holographic entanglement entropy proposal of hep-th/0603001. Apart from providing several examples of possible covariant generalizations, we study a particular construction based on light-sheets, motivated in similar spirit to the covariant entropy bound underlying the holographic principle. In particular, we argue that the entanglement entropy associated with a specified region on the boundary in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence is given by the area of a co-dimension two bulk surface with vanishing expansions of null geodesics. We demonstrate our construction with several examples to illustrate its reduction to the holographic entanglement entropy proposal in static spacetimes. We further show how this proposal may be used to understand the time evolution of entanglement entropy in a time varying QFT state dual to a collapsing black hole background. Finally, we use our proposal to argue that the Euclidean wormhole geometries with multiple boundaries should be regarded as states in a non-interacting but entangled set of QFTs, one associated to each boundary.

Causal Holographic Information

We propose a measure of holographic information based on a causal wedge construction. The motivation behind this comes from an attempt to understand how boundary field theories can holographically reconstruct spacetime. We argue that given the knowledge of the reduced density matrix in a spatial region of the boundary, one should be able to reconstruct at least the corresponding bulk causal wedge. In attempt to quantify the `amount of information' contained in a given spatial region in field theory, we consider a particular bulk surface (specifically a co-dimension two surface in the bulk spacetime which is an extremal surface on the boundary of the bulk causal wedge), and propose that the area of this surface, measured in Planck units, naturally quantifies the information content. We therefore call this area the causal holographic information. We also contrast our ideas with earlier studies of holographic entanglement entropy. In particular, we establish that the causal holographic information, whilst not being a von Neumann entropy, curiously enough agrees with the entanglement entropy in all cases where one has a microscopic understanding of entanglement entropy.

Extremal surfaces as bulk probes in AdS/CFT

Motivated by the need for further insight into the emergence of AdS bulk spacetime from CFT degrees of freedom, we explore the behaviour of probes represented by specific geometric quantities in the bulk. We focus on geodesics and n-dimensional extremal surfaces in a general static asymptotically AdS spacetime with spherical and planar symmetry, respectively. While our arguments do not rely on the details of the metric, we illustrate some of our findings explicitly in spacetimes of particular interest (specifically AdS, Schwarzschild-AdS and extreme Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS). In case of geodesics, we find that for a fixed spatial distance between the geodesic endpoints, spacelike geodesics at constant time can reach deepest into the bulk. We also present a simple argument for why, in the presence of a black hole, geodesics cannot probe past the horizon whilst anchored on the AdS boundary at both ends. The reach of an extremal n-dimensional surface anchored on a given region depends on its dimensionality, the shape and size of the bounding region, as well as the bulk metric. We argue that for a fixed extent or volume of the boundary region, spherical regions give rise to the deepest reach of the corresponding extremal surface. Moreover, for physically sensible spacetimes, at fixed extent of the boundary region, higher-dimensional surfaces reach deeper into the bulk. Finally, we show that in a static black hole spacetime, no extremal surface (of any dimensionality, anchored on any region in the boundary) can ever penetrate the horizon.

NR/HEP: roadmap for the future

Physics in curved spacetime describes a multitude of phenomena, ranging from astrophysics to high energy physics. The last few years have witnessed further progress on several fronts, including the accurate numerical evolution of the gravitational field equations, which now allows highly nonlinear phenomena to be tamed. Numerical relativity simulations, originally developed to understand strong field astrophysical processes, could prove extremely useful to understand high-energy physics processes like trans-Planckian scattering and gauge-gravity dualities. We present a concise and comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art and important open problems in the field(s), along with guidelines for the next years. This writeup is a summary of the "NR/HEP Workshop" held in Madeira, Portugal from August 31st to September 3rd 2011.

Holographic insights and puzzles

The talk is composed of two parts, both set within the AdS/CFT context. In the first part, I discuss holographic insight into strongly coupled field theory in a black hole background. I conjecture two new gravitational solutions, dubbed black funnels and black droplets, which describe two distinct deconfined phases in the field theory at finite temperature. I also briefly mention puzzles associated with an analogous set-up in a rotating black hole background. In the second part of the talk, I discuss time-dependent states in a CFT on flat spacetime background, exemplified by the conformal soliton flow. Here I focus on puzzles regarding the nature of entropy in time-evolving states and its holographic dual.

The Fluid/Gravity Correspondence: a new perspective on the Membrane Paradigm

This talk gives an overview of the recently-formulated Fluid/Gravity correspondence, which was developed in the context of gauge/gravity duality. Mathematically, it posits that Einstein's equations (with negative cosmological constant) in d+1 dimensions capture the (generalized) Navier-Stokes equations in d dimensions. Given an arbitrary fluid dynamical solution, we can systematically construct a corresponding asymptotically AdS black hole spacetime with a regular horizon whose properties mimic that of the fluid flow. Apart from an overview of this construction, we describe some of its applications. The presentation is intended for a broad audience of relativists, and does not assume prior knowledge of string theory or gauge/gravity duality.

Holographic dual of collimated radiation

We propose a new and simple method of estimating the radiation due to an accelerated quark in a strongly coupled medium, within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular, we offer a heuristic explanation of the collimated nature of synchrotron radiation produced by a circling quark, which was recently studied in Phys.Rev.D81 (2010) 126001. The gravitational dual of such quark is a coiling string in AdS, whose backreaction on the spacetime geometry remains tightly confined, as if 'beamed' towards the boundary. While this appears to contradict conventional expectations from the scale/radius duality, we resolve the issue by observing that the backreaction of a relativistic string is reproduced by a superposition of gravitational shock waves. We further demonstrate that this proposal allows us to reduce the problem of computing the boundary stress tensor to merely calculating geodesics in AdS, as opposed to solving linearized Einstein's equations.

Relativistic Beaming in AdS/CFT

We propose a mechanism of 'beaming' the backreaction of a relativistic source in the bulk of AdS towards the boundary. Using this beaming mechanism to estimate the energy distribution from radiation by a circling quark in strongly coupled field theory, we find remarkable agreement with the previous results of arXiv:1001.3880. Apart from explaining a puzzling feature of these results and elucidating the scale/radius duality in AdS/CFT, our proposal provides a useful computational technique.

Hawking radiation in large N strongly-coupled field theories

We consider strongly coupled field theories at large N on black hole backgrounds. At sufficiently high Hawking temperature T_H, one expects a phase where the black hole is in equilibrium with a deconfined plasma. We explore this phase in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, and argue that two possible behaviors may result. At a given Hawking temperature T_H, field theories on large black hole backgrounds will couple strongly to the plasma and will be dual to novel bulk spacetimes having a single connected horizon which we dub {\it black funnels}. We construct examples of black funnels in low spacetime dimensions for different classes of field theory black holes. In this case, perturbing the equilibrium state results in the field theory exchanging heat with the black hole at a rate typical of conduction through deconfined plasma. In contrast, we argue that due to the finite physical size of plasma excitations, smaller black holes will couple only weakly to the field theory excitations. This situation is dual to bulk solutions containing two disconnected horizons which remain to be constructed. Here perturbations lead to heat exchange at a level typical of confined phases, even when T_H remains far above any deconfinement transition. At least at large N and strong coupling, these two behaviors are separated by a sharp transition. Our results also suggest a richer class of brane-world black holes than hitherto anticipated.

A holographic view on physics out of equilibrium

We review the recent developments in applying holographic methods to understand non-equilibrium physics in strongly coupled field theories. The emphasis will be on elucidating the relation between evolution of quantum field theories perturbed away from equilibrium and the dual picture of dynamics of classical fields in black hole backgrounds. In particular, we discuss the linear response regime, the hydrodynamic regime and finally the non-linear regime of interacting quantum systems. We also describe how the duality might be used to learn some salient aspects of black hole physics in terms of field theory observables.

Black funnels and droplets from the AdS C-metrics

We recently argued that the dynamics of strongly coupled field theories in black hole backgrounds is related via the AdS/CFT correspondence to two new classes of AdS black hole solutions: black funnels, and black droplets suspended above a second disconnected horizon. The funnel solutions are dual to black holes coupling strongly to a field theory plasma. In contrast, the droplet solutions describe black holes coupling only weakly. We continue our investigation of these solutions and construct a wide variety of examples from the AdS C-metric in four bulk spacetime dimensions. The solutions we find are dual to field theories on spatially compact universes with Killing horizons.

Brownian motion in AdS/CFT

We study Brownian motion and the associated Langevin equation in AdS/CFT. The Brownian particle is realized in the bulk spacetime as a probe fundamental string in an asymptotically AdS black hole background, stretching between the AdS boundary and the horizon. The modes on the string are excited by the thermal black hole environment and consequently the string endpoint at the boundary undergoes an erratic motion, which is identified with an external quark in the boundary CFT exhibiting Brownian motion. Semiclassically, the modes on the string are thermally excited due to Hawking radiation, which translates into the random force appearing in the boundary Langevin equation, while the friction in the Langevin equation corresponds to the excitation on the string being absorbed by the black hole. We give a bulk proof of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem relating the random force and friction. This work can be regarded as a step toward understanding the quantum microphysics underlying the fluid-gravity correspondence. We also initiate a study of the properties of the effective membrane or stretched horizon picture of black holes using our bulk description of Brownian motion.

Dynamical black holes and expanding plasmas

We analyse the global structure of time-dependent geometries dual to expanding plasmas, considering two examples: the boost invariant Bjorken flow, and the conformal soliton flow. While the geometry dual to the Bjorken flow is constructed in a perturbation expansion at late proper time, the conformal soliton flow has an exact dual (which corresponds to a Poincare patch of Schwarzschild-AdS). In particular, we discuss the position and area of event and apparent horizons in the two geometries. The conformal soliton geometry offers a sharp distinction between event and apparent horizon; whereas the area of the event horizon diverges, that of the apparent horizon stays finite and constant. This suggests that the entropy of the corresponding CFT state is related to the apparent horizon rather than the event horizon.

On Universality of Ergoregion Mergers

We study mergers of ergoregions in $d+1$-dimensional vacuum gravity. At the merger point, where the ergosurfaces bounding each ergoregion just touch, solutions exhibit universal behavior when there is rotation only in one plane: the angle between the merging ergosurfaces depends only on the symmetries of the solution, not on any other details of the configuration. We show that universality follows from the fact that the relevant component of Einstein's equation reduces to Laplace equation at the point of merger. Thus ergoregion mergers mimic mergers of Newtonian equipotentials and have similar universal behavior. For solutions with rotation in more than one plane, universality is lost. We demonstrate universality and non-universality in several explicit examples.

Holographic entanglement entropy for disconnected regions

We present a simple derivation of the entanglement entropy for a region made up of a union of disjoint intervals in 1+1 dimensional quantum field theories using holographic techniques. This generalizes the results for 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories derived previously by exploiting the uniformization map. We further comment on the generalization of our result to higher dimensional field theories.

Inflation in AdS/CFT

We study the AdS/CFT correspondence as a probe of inflation. We assume the existence of a string landscape containing at least one stable AdS vacuum and a (nearby) metastable de Sitter state. Standard arguments imply that the bulk physics in the vicinity of the AdS minimum is described by a boundary CFT. We argue that large enough bubbles of the dS phase, including those able to inflate, are described by mixed states in the CFT. Inflating degrees of freedom are traced over and do not appear explicitly in the boundary description. They nevertheless leave a distinct imprint on the mixed state. In the supergravity approximation, analytic continuation connects AdS/CFT correlators to dS/CFT correlators. This provides a framework for extracting further information as well. Our work also shows that no scattering process can create an inflating region, even by quantum tunneling, since a pure state can never evolve into a mixed state under unitary evolution.

Causal structures and holography

We explore the description of bulk causal structure in a dual field theory. We observe that in the spacetime dual to a spacelike non-commutative field theory, the causal structure in the boundary directions is modified asymptotically. We propose that this modification is described in the dual theory by a modification of the micro-causal light cone. Previous studies of this micro-causal light cone for spacelike non-commutativite field theories agree with the expectations from the bulk spacetime. We describe the spacetime dual to field theories with lightlike non-commutativity, and show that they generically have a drastic modification of the light cone in the bulk: the spacetime is non-distinguishing. This means that the spacetime while being devoid of closed timelike or null curves, has causal curves that are ``almost closed''. We go on to show that the micro-causal light cone in the field theory agrees with this prediction from the bulk.
