Computing with rational symmetric functions and applications to invariant theory and PI-algebras

Let the formal power series f in d variables with coefficients in an arbitrary field be a symmetric function decomposed as a series of Schur functions, and let f be a rational function whose denominator is a product of binomials of the form (1 - monomial). We use a classical combinatorial method of Elliott of 1903 further developed in the Partition Analysis of MacMahon in 1916 to compute the generating function of the multiplicities (i.e., the coefficients) of the Schur functions in the expression of f. It is a rational function with denominator of a similar form as f. We apply the method to several problems on symmetric algebras, as well as problems in classical invariant theory, algebras with polynomial identities, and noncommutative invariant theory.

Shirshov's theorem and division rings that are left algebraic over a subfield

Let D be a division ring. We say that D is left algebraic over a (not necessarily central) subfield K of D if every x in D satisfies a polynomial equation x^n + a_{n-1}x^{n-1}+...+a_0=0 with a_0,...,a_{n-1} in K. We show that if D is a division ring that is left algebraic over a subfield K of bounded degree d then D is at most d^2-dimensional over its center. This generalizes a result of Kaplansky. For the proof we give a new version of the combinatorial theorem of Shirshov that sufficiently long words over a finite alphabet contain either a q-decomposable subword or a high power of a non-trivial subword. We show that if the word does not contain high powers then the factors in the q-decomposition may be chosen to be of almost the same length. We conclude by giving a list of problems for algebras that are left algebraic over a commutative subring.

Algebraic Properties of Codimension Series of PI-Algebras

For a PI-algebra R over a field of characteristic 0 let T(R) be the T-ideal of the polynomial identities of R and let c(R,t) be the codimension series of R (i.e., the generating function of the codimension sequence of R). Let A, B and R be PI-algebras such that T(R)=T(A)T(B). We show that if c(A,t) and c(B,t) are rational functions, then c(R,t) is also rational. If c(A,t) is rational and c(B,t) is algebraic, then c(R,t) is also algebraic. The proof is based on the fact that the product of two exponential generating functions behaves as the exponential generating function of the sequence of the degrees of the outer tensor products of two sequences of representations of symmetric groups.

Cocharacters of polynomial identities of upper triangular matrices

We give an easy algorithm which calculates the generating function of the cocharacter sequence of the T-ideal of the polynomial identities of the algebra of upper triangular matrices over a field of characteristic zero. Applying this algorithm we have found the explicit form of the multiplicities in two cases: (i) for the "largest" partitions; (ii) for matrices of small size and for all partitions.

Inner and Outer Automorphisms of Free Metabelian Nilpotent Lie algebras

We describe the groups of inner and outer automorphisms of the free metabelian nilpotent Lie algebra of finite rank over a field of characteristic 0. To obtain this result we first describe the groups of inner and continuous outer automorphisms of the completion with respect to the formal power series topology of the free metabelian Lie algebra finite rank.

Algebras generated by two quadratic elements

Let K be a field of any characteristic and let R be an algebra generated by two elements satisfying quadratic equations. Then R is a homomorphic image of F=K for suitable a,b,c,d in K. We establish that F can be embedded into the 2x2 matrix algebra M_2(E[t]) with entries from the polynomial algebra E[t] over the algebraic closure E of K and that F and M_2(E) satisfy the same polynomial identities as K-algebras. When the quadratic equations have double zeros, our result is a partial case of more general results by Ufnarovskij, Borisenko and Belov from the 1980's. When each of the equations has different zeros, we improve a result of Weiss, also from the 1980's.

Centralizers in endomorphism rings

We prove that the centralizer Cen(f) in Hom_R(M,M) of a nilpotent endomorphism f of a finitely generated semisimple left R-module M (over an arbitrary ring R) is the homomorphic image of the opposite of a certain Z(R)-subalgebra of the full m x m matrix algebra M_m(R[z]), where m is the dimension (composition length) of ker(f). If R is a local ring, then we provide an explicit description of the above Cen(f). If in addition Z(R) is a field and R/J(R) is finite dimensional over Z(R), then we give a formula for the Z(R)-dimension of Cen(f). If R is a local ring, f is as above and g is an arbitrary element of Hom_R(M,M), then we give a complete description of the containment Cen(f) in Cen(g) in terms of an appropriate R-generating set of M. Using our results about nilpotent endomorphisms, for an arbitrary (not necessarily nilpotent) linear map f in Hom_K(V,V) of a finite dimensional vector space V over a field K we determine the PI-degree of Cen(f) and give other information about the polynomial identities of Cen(f).

Dimension of automorphisms with fixed degree for polynomial algebras

Let $K[x,y]$ be the polynomial algebra in two variables over an algebraically closed field $K$. We generalize to the case of any characteristic the result of Furter that over a field of characteristic zero the set of automorphisms $(f,g)$ of $K[x,y]$ such that $\max\{\text{deg}(f),\text{deg}(g)\}=n\geq 2$ is constructible with dimension $n+6$. The same result holds for the automorphisms of the free associative algebra $K< x,y>$. We have also obtained analogues for free algebras with two generators in Nielsen -- Schreier varieties of algebras.

Automorphisms of polynomial algebras and Dirichlet series

Let GF(q)[x,y] be the polynomial algebra in two variables over the finite field GF(q) with q elements. We give an exact formula and the asymptotics for the number p(n) of automorphisms (f,g) of GF(q)[x,y] such that max{deg(f),deg(g)}=n. We describe also the Dirichlet series generating function p(1)/1^s+p(2)/2^s+p(3)/3^s+.... The same results hold for the automorphisms of the free associative algebra GF(q) . We have also obtained analogues for free algebras with two generators in Nielsen - Schreier varieties of algebras.

Degree estimate for commutators

Let K be a free associative algebra over a field K of characteristic 0 and let each of the noncommuting polynomials f,g generate its centralizer in K . Assume that the leading homogeneous components of f and g are algebraically dependent with degrees which do not divide each other. We give a counterexample to the recent conjecture of Jie-Tai Yu that deg([f,g])=deg(fg-gf) > min{deg(f),deg(g)}. Our example satisfies deg(g)/2 < deg([f,g]) < deg(g) < deg(f) and deg([f,g]) can be made as close to deg(g)/2 as we want. We obtain also a counterexample to another related conjecture of Makar-Limanov and Jie-Tai Yu stated in terms of Malcev - Neumann formal power series. These counterexamples are found using the description of the free algebra K considered as a bimodule of K[u] where u is a monomial which is not a power of another monomial and then solving the equation [u^m,s]=[u^n,r] with unknowns r,s in K .

The Conjecture of Nowicki on Weitzenboeck derivations of polynomial algebras

The Weitzenboeck theorem states that the algebra of constants of a linear locally nilpotent derivation of the polynomial algebra K[Z]=K[z_1,...,z_m] in m variables over a field K of characteristic 0 is finitely generated. If m=2n and the Jordan normal form of the derivation consists of Jordan cells of size 2 only, we may assume that K[Z]=K[X,Y] and the derivation sends y_i to x_i and x_i to 0, i=1,...,n. Nowicki conjectured that the algebra of constants of this derivation is generated by x_1,...,x_n and x_iy_j-x_jy_i, i<j. Recently this conjecture was confirmed in the Ph.D. thesis of Khoury, and also by Derksen. In this paper we give an elementary proof of the conjecture of Nowicki. Then we find a very simple system of defining relations of the algebra of constants which corresponds to the reduced Groebner basis of the related ideal with respect to a suitable admissible order, and present an explicit basis of the algebra of constants as a vector space.

Planar trees, free nonassociative algebras, invariants, and elliptic integrals

We consider absolutely free nonassociative algebras and, more generally, absolutely free algebras with (maybe infinitely) many multilinear operations. Such algebras are described in terms of labeled reduced planar rooted trees. This allows to apply combinatorial techniques to study their Hilbert series and the asymptotics of their coefficients. These algebras satisfy the Nielsen-Schreier property and their subalgebras are also free. Then, over a field of characteristic 0, we investigate the subalgebras of invariants under the action of a linear group, their sets of free generators and their Hilbert series. It has turned out that, except in the trivial cases, the algebra of invariants is never finitely generated. In important partial cases the Hilbert series of the algebras of invariants and the generating functions of their sets of free generators are expressed in terms of elliptic integrals.

Defining Relations of Low Degree of Invariants of Two $4 \times 4$ Matrices

Over a field K of characteristic 0, we study the algebra of invariants of the general linear group GL(4,K) acting by simultaneous conjugation on two matrices of order 4. It coincides with the trace algebra generated by all traces of products of two generic matrices of order 4. It is known that the minimal degree of the defining relations of any homogeneous minimal generating set of this algebra is equal to 12. Starting with the generating set given recently by Drensky and Sadikova, we have determined all relations of degree < 15. For this purpose we have developed further algorithms based on representation theory of the general linear group and easy computer calculations with standard functions of Maple.

Defining Relations of Minimal Degree of the Trace Algebra of $3 \times 3$ Matrices

The trace algebra C(n,d) over a field of characteristic 0 is generated by all traces of products of d generic nxn matrices, n,d>1. Minimal sets of generators of C(n,d) are known for n=2 and n=3 for any d as well as for n=4 and n=5 and d=2. The defining relations between the generators are found for n=2 and any d and for n=3, d=2 only. Starting with the generating set of C(3,d) given by Abeasis and Pittaluga in 1989, we have shown that the minimal degree of the set of defining relations of C(3,d) is equal to 7 for any d>2. We have determined all relations of minimal degree. For d=3 we have also found the defining relations of degree 8. The proofs are based on methods of representation theory of the general linear group and easy computer calculations with standard functions of Maple.

Automorphic equivalence problem for free associative algebras of rank two

Let K be the free associative algebra of rank 2 over an algebraically closed constructive field of any characteristic. We present an algorithm which decides whether or not two elements in K are equivalent under an automorphism of K . A modification of our algorithm solves the problem whether or not an element in K is a semiinvariant of a nontrivial automorphism. In particular, it determines whether or not the element has a nontrivial stabilizer in Aut K . An algorithm for equivalence of polynomials under automorphisms of C[x,y] was presented by Wightwick. Another, much simpler algorithm for automorphic equivalence of two polynomials in K[x,y] for any algebraically closed constructive field K was given by Makar-Limanov, Shpilrain, and Yu. In our approach we combine an idea of the latter three authors with an idea from the unpubished thesis of Lane used to describe automorphisms which stabilize elements of K . This also allows us to give a simple proof of the corresponding result for K[x,y] obtained by Makar-Limanov, Shpilrain, and Yu.

Coordinates and Automorphisms of Polynomial and Free Associative Algebras of Rank Three

We study z-automorphisms of the polynomial algebra K[x,y,z] and the free associative algebra K over a field K, i.e., automorphisms which fix the variable z. We survey some recent results on such automorphisms and on the corresponding coordinates. For K we include also results about the structure of the z-tame automorphisms and algorithms which recognize z-tame automorphisms and z-tame coordinates.
