A lecture on Arithmetic Mirror Symmetry and Calabi-Yau manifolds

We extend our variant of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces \cite{GN3} and clarify its relation with mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds. We introduce two classes (for the models A and B) of Calabi-Yau manifolds fibrated by K3 surfaces with some special Picard lattices. These two classes are related with automorphic forms on IV type domains which we studied in our papers \cite{GN1}-\cite{GN6}. Conjecturally these automorphic forms take part in the quantum intersection pairing for model A, Yukawa coupling for model B and mirror symmetry between these two classes of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Recently there were several papers by physicists where it was shown on some examples. We propose a problem of classification of introduced Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our papers \cite{GN1}-\cite{GN6} and \cite{N3}-\cite{N14} give a hope that this is possible. They describe possible Picard or transcendental lattices of general K3 fibers of the Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Automorphic Forms and Lorentzian Kac-Moody Algebras. Part II

We give variants of lifting construction, which define new classes of modular forms on the Siegel upper half-space of complex dimension 3 with respect to the full paramodular groups (defining moduli of Abelian surfaces with arbitrary polarization). The data for these liftings are Jacobi forms of integral and half-integral indices. In particular, we get modular forms which are generalizations of the Dedekind eta-function. Some of these forms define automorphic corrections of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras with hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrices of rank three classified in Part I of this paper. We also construct many automorphic forms which give discriminants of moduli of K3 surfaces with conditions on Picard lattice. These results are important for Mirror Symmetry and theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras.

Automorphic Forms and Lorentzian Kac--Moody Algebras. Part I

Using the general method which was applied to prove finiteness of the set of hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrices of elliptic and parabolic type, we classify all symmetric (and twisted to symmetric) hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrices of elliptic type and of rank 3 with a lattice Weyl vector. We develop the general theory of reflective lattices T with 2 negative squares and reflective automorphic forms on homogeneous domains of type IV defined by T. We consider this theory as mirror symmetric to the theory of elliptic and parabolic hyperbolic reflection groups and corresponding hyperbolic root systems. We formulate Arithmetic Mirror Symmetry Conjecture relating both these theories and prove some statements to support this Conjecture. This subject is connected with automorphic correction of Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras. We define Lie reflective automorphic forms which are the most beautiful automorphic forms defining automorphic Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras, and we formulate finiteness Conjecture for these forms. Detailed study of automorphic correction and Lie reflective automorphic forms for generalized Cartan matrices mentioned above will be given in Part II.

The Igusa modular forms and ``the simplest'' Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras

We find automorphic corrections for the Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras with the simplest generalized Cartan matrices of rank 3: A_{1,0} = 2 0 -1 0 2 -2 -1 -2 2 and A_{1,I} = 2 -2 -1 -2 2 -1 -1 -1 2 For A_{1,0} this correction is given by the Igusa Sp_4(Z)-modular form χ_{35} of weight 35, and for A_{1,I} by a Siege modular form of weight 30 with respect to a 2-congruence subgroup. We find infinite product or sum expansions for these forms. Our method of construction of χ_{35} leads to the direct construction of Siegel modular forms by infinite product expansions, whose divisors are the Humbert surfaces with fixed discriminants. Existence of these forms was proved by van der Geer in 1982 using some geometrical consideration. We announce a list of all hyperbolic symmetric generalized Cartan matrices A of rank 3 such that A has elliptic or parabolic type, A has a lattice Weyl vector, and A contains the affine submatrix \tilde{A}_1.

The Remark on Discriminants of K3 Surfaces Moduli as Sets of Zeros of Automorphic Forms

We show that for any $N>0$ there exists a natural even $n>N$ such that the discriminant of moduli of K3 surfaces of the degree $n$ is not equal to the set of zeros of any automorphic form on the corresponding IV type domain. We give the necessary condition on a "condition $S\subset L_{K3}$ on Picard lattice of K3'' for the corresponding moduli $\M_{S\subset L_{K3}}$ of K3 to have the discriminant which is equal to the set of zeros of an automorphic form. We conjecture that the set of $S\subset L_{K3}$ satisfying this necessary condition is finite if $\rk S \le 17$. We consider this finiteness conjecture as "mirror symmetric'' to the known finiteness results for arithmetic reflection groups in hyperbolic spaces and as important for the theory of Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras and the related theory of automorphic forms.

Reflection groups in hyperbolic spaces and the denominator formula for Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras

This is a continuation of our "Lecture on Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the arithmetic type" \cite{25}. We consider hyperbolic (i.e. signature $(n,1)$) integral symmetric bilinear form $S:M\times M \to {\Bbb Z}$ (i.e. hyperbolic lattice), reflection group $W\subset W(S)$, fundamental polyhedron $\Cal M$ of $W$ and an acceptable (corresponding to twisting coefficients) set $P({\Cal M})\subset M$ of vectors orthogonal to faces of $\Cal M$ (simple roots). One can construct the corresponding Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebra ${\goth g}={\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W,P({\Cal M})))$ which is graded by $M$. We show that $\goth g$ has good behavior of imaginary roots, its denominator formula is defined in a natural domain and has good automorphic properties if and only if $\goth g$ has so called {\it restricted arithmetic type}. We show that every finitely generated (i.e. $P({\Cal M})$ is finite) algebra ${\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W_1,P({\Cal M}_1)))$ may be embedded to ${\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W,P({\Cal M})))$ of the restricted arithmetic type. Thus, Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type is a natural class to study. Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type have the best automorphic properties for the denominator function if they have {\it a lattice Weyl vector $ρ$}. Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the restricted arithmetic type with generalized lattice Weyl vector $ρ$ are called {\it elliptic}

K3 surfaces, Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras and Mirror Symmetry

We consider the variant of Mirror Symmetry Conjecture for K3 surfaces which relates "geometry" of curves of a general member of a family of K3 with "algebraic functions" on the moduli of the mirror family. Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras are involved in this construction. We give several examples when this conjecture is valid.

Siegel automorphic form corrections of some Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebras

We find automorphic form corrections which are generalized Lorentzian Kac--Moody superalgebras without odd real simple roots (see R. Borcherds \cite{Bo1} -- \cite{Bo7}, V. Kac \cite{Ka1} -- \cite{Ka3}, R. Moody \cite{Mo} and §~6 of this paper) for two elliptic Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras of the rank $3$ with a lattice Weyl vector, and calculate multiplicities of their simple and arbitrary imaginary roots (see an appropriate general setting in \cite{N5}). These Kac--Moody algebras are defined by hyperbolic (i.e. with exactly one negative square) symmetrized generalized Cartan matrices $$G_1\ =\ \left(\matrix\hphantom{-} 2&-2&-2\\-2 &\hphantom{-}2&-2\\-2&-2& \hphantom{-} 2 \endmatrix\right)\hskip30pt \text{and} \hskip 30pt G_2\ =\ \left(\matrix\hphantom{-}4 & -4 & -12& -4 \\-4 &\hphantom{-}4 &-4&-12

A lecture on Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the arithmetic type

We name an indecomposable symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix $A$ and the corresponding Kac--Moody Lie algebra ${\goth g} ^\prime (A)$ {\it of the arithmetic type} if for any $β\in Q$ with $(β| β)<0$ there exist $n(β)\in {\Bbb N}$ and an imaginary root $α\in Δ^{im}$ such that $n(β)β\equiv α\mod Ker\ (.|.)$ on $Q$. Here $Q$ is the root lattice. This generalizes "symmetrizable hyperbolic" type of Kac and Moody. We show that generalized Cartan matrices of the arithmetic type are divided in $4$ types: (a) finite, (b) affine, (c) rank two, and (d) arithmetic hyperbolic type. The last type is very closely related with arithmetic groups generated by reflections in hyperbolic spaces with the field of definition $\Bbb Q$. We apply results of the author and É.B. Vinberg on arithmetic groups generated by reflections in hyperbolic spaces to describe generalized Cartan matrices of the arithmetic hyperbolic type and to show that there exists a finite set of series of the generalized Cartan matrices of the arithmetic hyperbolic type. For the symmetric case all these series are known.

Diagram Method for 3-Folds and its Application to Kahler Cone and Picard Number of Calabi-Yau 3-Folds, I. with Appendix by Vyacheslav V. Shokurov: "Anticanonical boundedness for curves"

We prove the general diagram method theorem valid for the quite large class of 3-folds with Q-factorial singularities (see Basic Theorem 1.3.2 and also Theorem 2.2.6). This gives the generalization of our results about Fano 3-folds with Q-factorial terminal singularities (Preprint alg-geom/9311007). As an application, we get the following result about 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds X: Assume that the Picard number ρ(X) > 93. Then one of two cases (i) or (ii) holds: (i) there exists a small extremal ray on X; (ii) There exists a nef element h such that h^3=0 (thus, the nef cone NEF(X) and the cubic intersection hypersurface W_X have a common point; here, we don't claim that h is rational!). As a corollary, we get: Let X be a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifold. Assume that the nef cone NEF(X) is finite polyhedral and X does not have a small extremal ray. Then there exists a rational nef element h with h^3=0 if ρ(X)>93. To prove these results about Calabi-Yau manifolds, we also use one result of V.V. Shokurov on the length of divisorial extremal rays (see Appendix by V.V. Shokurov). Thus, one should consider the results on Calabi-Yau 3-folds above as our common results with V.V. Shokurov. We also discuss generalization of results above to so called Q-factorial models of Calabi-Yau 3-folds, which sometimes permits to involve non-polyhedral case and small extremal rays to the game.

Algebraic Surfaces with Log-Terminal Singularities and nef Anticanonical Class and Reflection Groups in Lobachevsky Spaces. I (Basics of the Diagram Method)

In our preprint: "Algebraic surfaces with log-terminal singularities and nef anticanonical class and reflection groups in Lobachevsky spaces", Preprint Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik, Bonn, (1989) MPI/89-28 (Russian), we had extended the diagram method to algebraic surfaces with nef anticanonical class (before, it was applied to Del Pezzo surfaces). The main problem here is that Mori polyhedron may not be finite polyhedral in this case. In the §4 of this preprint we had shown that this method does work for algebraic surfaces with nef anticanonical class and log terminal singularities. Recently, using in particular these our results, Valery Alexeev (Boundedness and K^2 for log surfaces, Preprint (1994), alg-geom/942007), obtained strong and important results for surfaces of general type with semi-log canonical singularities. The reason is that Del Pezzo surfaces (the diagram method is especially effective for them) and surfaces of general type "are connected" through surfaces with numerically zero canonical class. This was the main reason that we decided to make this English translation of the first part (§1--§3) of our preprint above with some extensions (where we give omitted proofs) and minor corrections. This part contains basics of the diagram method for generalized reflection groups in Lobachevsky spaces and for surfaces with nef anticanonical class.

On the Brauer Group of Real Algebraic Surfaces

Let X be a real projective algebraic manifold, s numerates connected components of X(R) and _2Br(X) the subgroup of elements of order 2 of the cohomological Brauer group Br(X). We study the natural homomorphism ξ: _2Br(X) \to (Z/2)^s and prove that ξis epimorphic if H^3(X(C)/G;Z/2) \to H^3(X(R);Z/2) is injective. Here G=Gal(C/R). For an algebraic surface X with H^3(X(C)/G;Z/2)=0 and X(R)\not=\emptyset, we give a formula for dim _2Br(X). As a corollary, for a real Enriques surfaces Y, the ξis epimorphic and dim _2Br(Y)=2s-1 if both liftings of the antiholomorphic involution of Y to the universal covering K3- surface X have non-empty sets of real points (this is the general case). For this case, we also give a formula for the number s_{nor} of non-orientable components of Y which is very important for the topological classification of real Enriques surfaces.

On the Topological Classification of Real Enriques Surfaces. I

This note contains preliminary calculation of topological types or real Enriques surfaces. We realize 59 topological types of real Enriques surfaces (Theorem 6) and show that all other topological types belong to the list of 21 topological types (Theorem 7). In fact, our calculation contains much more information which is probably useful to constract or prohibit unknown topological types.
