New proposal for numerical simulations of systems with a theta-vacuum term

A new approach to perform numerical simulations of systems with a theta-vacuum term is proposed, tested, and applied to CP3 The main new ingredient of this approach is the method used to compute the probability distribution function of the topological charge at theta=0. We comment also on the possibility of applying this approach to QCD at finite baryon density.

New proposal for numerical simulations of theta-vacuum like systems

We propose a new approach to perform numerical simulations of theta-vacuum like systems, test it in two analytically solvable models, and apply it to CP^3. The main new ingredient in our approach is the method used to compute the probability distribution function of the topological charge at theta=0. We do not get unphysical phase transitions (flattening behavior of the free energy density) and reproduce the exact analytical results for the order parameter in the whole theta-range within a few percent.

Parity and CT realization in QCD

We show that an essential assumption in the Vafa and Witten's theorem on P and CT realization in vector-like theories, the existence of a free energy density in Euclidean space in the presence of any external hermitian symmetry breaking source, does not apply if the symmetry is spontaneously broken. The assumption that the free energy density is well defined requires the previous assumption that the symmetry is realized in the vacuum. Even if Vafa and Witten's conjecture is plausible, actually a theorem is still lacking.

Baryonic thermal fluctuations in finite temperature QCD

We show how, contrary to physical intuition, thermal fluctuations of physical states having a non-vanishing baryonic number can be fully neglected in the thermodynamics of QCD at any physical temperature. We also discuss on the consistency between our results and the CPT theorem. The last part of this article is devoted to comment some interesting physical features which follow from this result.

The role of the Polyakov loop in the Dirac operator of QCD at finite temperature

We show how all the contributions to the determinant of the Dirac-Kogut-Susskind operator of QCD at finite temperature containing a net number of Polyakov loops become irrelevant in the infinite volume limit. We discuss also on two of the most interesting physical implications of this result: i) the restoration of the Polyakov symmetry in the full theory with dynamical fermions and ii) the total suppression of baryonic thermal fluctuations in QCD at finite temperature.

Frustration in Lattice Gauge Theory

We introduce a U(1) lattice gauge theory which incorporates explicit frustration in $d>2$. We show, by identifying an appropiate order parameter and through computer simulations, the existence of a frustrated region in the phase diagram of the model. We study this phase diagram and the nature of the transition lines.

Continuous Chiral Transition in Strongly Coupled Compact QED with the Standard Torus Topology

We analyze the phase diagram of compact QED on the torus with a chirally symmetric four fermion interaction added to the usual Wilson action. Inside a mean field approximation for the four fermion term, a line of first order phase transitions and another one of second order are found in the $(β, G)$ plane. Approaching the second order line a continuum limit can be defined. Critical exponents vary along this line in a similar way as in the non-compact model, suggesting that a non trivial interacting continuum theory can be constructed.

Complex Probability Distributions: A Solution for the Long-Standing Problem of QCD at Finite Density

We show how the prescription of taking the absolute value of the fermion determinant in the integration measure of QCD at finite density, forgetting its phase, reproduces the correct thermodynamical limit. This prescription, which applies also to other gauge theories with non-positive-definite integration measure, also has the advantage of killing finite size effects due to extremely small mean values of the cosine of the phase of the fermion determinant. We also give an explanation for the pathological behaviour of quenched QCD at finite density.

Strongly Coupled QED

A short review of some of the most relevant contributions to non-perturbative QED is done. Since a Gaussian behaviour of QED à la $λϕ^4$ has been ruled out by the numerical data, I analyse the other two most reliable scenarios, i.e. triviality à la Nambu-Jona Lasinio and non-Gaussian critical behaviour. I give a suggestive theoretical argument against a Gaussian behaviour of QED à la Nambu-Jona Lasinio, and show how the numerical data for the susceptibility at the critical point of QED support this result.

Investigation of spontaneous symmetry breaking from a non standard approach

We propose a new method for the study of the chiral properties of the ground state in Quantum Field Theories (QFT's) which is based on the computation of the probability distribution function (p.d.f.) of the chiral condensate in the chiral limit. We show how despite of the fact that Grassmann variables cannot be simulated on a computer, an analysis of spontaneous symmetry breaking without a symmetry breaking external field, which is standard in the case of spin systems, can also be done in QFT's with fermion degrees of freedom.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Fermion-Gauge Systems- A Non Standard Approach

We propose a new method for the study of the chiral properties of the ground state in QFT's based on the computation of the probability distribution function of the chiral condensate. It can be applied directly in the chiral limit and therefore no mass extrapolations are needed. Furthermore this approach allows to write up equations relating the chiral condensate with quantities computable by standard numerical methods, the functional form of these relations depending on the broken symmetry group. As a check, we report some results for the compact Schwinger model.

Static Chaos in Spin Glasses against quenched disorder perturbations

We study the chaotic nature of spin glasses against perturbations of the realization of the quenched disorder. This type of perturbation modifies the energy landscape of the system without adding extensive energy. We exactly solve the mean-field case, which displays a very similar chaos to that observed under magnetic field perturbations, and discuss the possible extension of these results to the case of short-ranged models. It appears that dimension four plays the role of a specific critical dimension where mean-field theory is valid. We present numerical simulation results which support our main conclusions.
