Twist, elementary deformation, and KK correspondence in generalized complex geometry

We define the operations of conformal change and elementary deformation in the setting of generalized complex geometry. Then we apply Swann's twist construction to generalized (almost) complex and Hermitian structures obtained by these operations and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the Courant integrability of the resulting twisted structures. In particular, we associate to any appropriate generalized Kahler manifold (M, G, \mathcal J ) with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field a new generalized Kahler manifold, depending on the choice of a pair of non-vanishing functions and compatible twist data. We study this construction when (M, G, \mathcal J) is (diagonal) toric, with emphasis on the four dimensional case. In particular, we apply it to deformations of the standard flat Kahler metric on C^{n}, the Fubini-Study Kahler metric on CP^{2} and the so called admissible Kahler metrics on Hirzebruch surfaces. As a further application, we recover the KK (Kahler-Kahler) correspondence, which is obtained by specializing to the case of an ordinary Kahler manifold.

Quarter-pinched Einstein metrics interpolating between real and complex hyperbolic metrics

We show that the one-loop quantum deformation of the universal hypermultiplet provides a family of complete $1/4$-pinched negatively curved quaternionic Kähler (i.e. half conformally flat Einstein) metrics $g^c$, $c\ge 0$, on $\mathbb R^4$. The metric $g^0$ is the complex hyperbolic metric whereas the family $(g^c)_{c>0}$ is equivalent to a family of metrics $(h^b)_{b>0}$ depending on $b=1/c$ and smoothly extending to $b=0$ for which $h^0$ is the real hyperbolic metric. In this sense the one-loop deformation interpolates between the real and the complex hyperbolic metrics. We also determine the (singular) conformal structure at infinity for the above families.

Lecture Notes on Mathematical Methods of Classical Physics

These notes grew out of a lecture course on mathematical methods of classical physics for students of mathematics and mathematical physics at the master's level. Also, physicists with a strong interest in mathematics may find this text useful as a resource complementary to existing textbooks on classical physics. Topics include Lagrangian Mechanics, Hamiltonian Mechanics, Hamilton-Jacobi Theory, as well as Classical Field Theory formulated in the language of jet bundles. The latter topic also covers important examples of field theories such as sigma models, gauge theory, and Einstein's theory of general relativity.

ASK/PSK-correspondence and the r-map

We formulate a correspondence between affine and projective special Kähler manifolds of the same dimension. As an application, we show that, under this correspondence, the affine special Kähler manifolds in the image of the rigid r-map are mapped to one-parameter deformations of projective special Kähler manifolds in the image of the supergravity r-map. The above one-parameter deformations are interpreted as perturbative $α'$-corrections in heterotic and type-II string compactifications with $N=2$ supersymmetry. Also affine special Kähler manifolds with quadratic prepotential are mapped to one-parameter families of projective special Kähler manifolds with quadratic prepotential. We show that the completeness of the deformed supergravity r-map metric depends solely on the (well-understood) completeness of the undeformed metric and the sign of the deformation parameter.

Completeness of projective special Kähler and quaternionic Kähler manifolds

We prove that every projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{regular boundary behaviour} is complete and defines a family of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds depending on a parameter $c\ge 0$. We also show that, irrespective of its boundary behaviour, every complete projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{cubic prepotential} gives rise to such a family. Examples include non-trivial deformations of non-compact symmetric quaternionic Kähler manifolds.

Completeness of hyperbolic centroaffine hypersurfaces

This paper is concerned with the completeness (with respect to the centroaffine metric) of hyperbolic centroaffine hypersurfaces which are closed in the ambient vector space. We show that completeness holds under generic regularity conditions on the boundary of the convex cone generated by the hypersurface. The main result is that completeness holds for hyperbolic components of level sets of homogeneous cubic polynomials. This implies that every such component defines a complete quaternionic Kähler manifold of negative scalar curvature.

Special Geometry of Euclidean Supersymmetry IV: the local c-map

We consider timelike and spacelike reductions of 4D, N = 2 Minkowskian and Euclidean vector multiplets coupled to supergravity and the maps induced on the scalar geometry. In particular, we investigate (i) the (standard) spatial c-map, (ii) the temporal c-map, which corresponds to the reduction of the Minkowskian theory over time, and (iii) the Euclidean c-map, which corresponds to the reduction of the Euclidean theory over space. In the last two cases we prove that the target manifold is para-quaternionic Kahler. In cases (i) and (ii) we construct two integrable complex structures on the target manifold, one of which belongs to the quaternionic and para-quaternionic structure, respectively. In case (iii) we construct two integrable para-complex structures, one of which belongs to the para-quaternionic structure. In addition we provide a new global construction of the spatial, temporal and Euclidean c-maps, and separately consider a description of the target manifold as a fibre bundle over a projective special Kahler or para-Kahler base.

Quaternionic Kähler metrics associated with special Kähler manifolds

We give an explicit formula for the quaternionic Kähler metrics obtained by the HK/QK correspondence. As an application, we give a new proof of the fact that the Ferrara-Sabharwal metric as well as its one-loop deformation is quaternionic Kähler. A similar explicit formula is given for the analogous (K/K) correspondence between Kähler manifolds endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field. As an example, we apply this formula in the case of an arbitrary conical Kähler manifold.

Locally homogeneous nearly Kähler manifolds

We construct locally homogeneous 6-dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds as quotients of homogeneous nearly Kähler manifolds $M$ by freely acting finite subgroups of $Aut_0(M)$. We show that non-trivial such groups do only exists if $M=S^3\times S^3$. In that case we classify all freely acting subgroups of $Aut_0(M)=SU (2) \times SU (2) \times SU (2)$ of the form $A\times B$, where $A\subset SU (2) \times SU (2)$ and $B\subset SU (2)$.

On the boundary behaviour of left-invariant Hitchin and hypo flows

We investigate left-invariant Hitchin and hypo flows on $5$-, $6$- and $7$-dimensional Lie groups. They provide Riemannian cohomogeneity-one manifolds of one dimension higher with holonomy contained in $SU(3)$, $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$, respectively, which are in general geodesically incomplete. Generalizing results of Conti, we prove that for large classes of solvable Lie groups $G$ these manifolds cannot be completed: a complete Riemannian manifold with parallel $SU(3)$-, $G_2$- or $Spin(7)$-structure which is of cohomogeneity one with respect to $G$ is flat, and has no singular orbits. We furthermore classify, on the non-compact Lie group $SL(2,C)$, all half-flat $SU(3)$-structures which are bi-invariant with respect to the maximal compact subgroup $SU(2)$ and solve the Hitchin flow for these initial values. It turns out that often the flow collapses to a smooth manifold in one direction. In this way we recover an incomplete cohomogeneity-one Riemannian metric with holonomy equal to $G_2$ on the twisted product $SL(2,C)\times_{SU(2)} C^2$ described by Bryant and Salamon.

Time-like reductions of five-dimensional supergravity

In this paper we study the scalar geometries occurring in the dimensional reduction of minimal five-dimensional supergravity to three Euclidean dimensions, and find that these depend on whether one first reduces over space or over time. In both cases the scalar manifold of the reduced theory is described as an eight-dimensional Lie group $L$ (the Iwasawa subgroup of $G_{2(2)}$) with a left-invariant para-quaternionic-Kähler structure. We show that depending on whether one reduces first over space or over time, the group $L$ is mapped to two different open $L$-orbits on the pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space $G_{2(2)}/(SL(2) \cdot SL(2))$. These two orbits are inequivalent in the sense that they are distinguished by the existence of integrable $L$-invariant complex or para-complex structures.

Classification of complete projective special real surfaces

We determine all complete projective special real surfaces. By the supergravity r-map, they give rise to complete projective special Kähler manifolds of dimension 6, which are distinguished by the image of their scalar curvature function. By the supergravity c-map, the latter manifolds define in turn complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds of dimension 16.

Conification of Kähler and hyper-Kähler manifolds

Given a Kähler manifold $M$ endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field $Z$, we construct a conical Kähler manifold $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is recovered as a Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. Similarly, given a hyper-Kähler manifold $(M,g,J_1,J_2,J_3)$ endowed with a Killing vector field $Z$, Hamiltonian with respect to the Kähler form of $J_1$ and satisfying $\mathcal{L}_ZJ_2= -2J_3$, we construct a hyper-Kähler cone $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is a certain hyper-Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. In this way, we recover a theorem by Haydys. Our work is motivated by the problem of relating the supergravity c-map to the rigid c-map. We show that any hyper-Kähler manifold in the image of the c-map admits a Killing vector field with the above properties. Therefore, it gives rise to a hyper-Kähler cone, which in turn defines a quaternionic Kähler manifold. Our results for the signature of the metric and the sign of the scalar curvature are consistent with what we know about the supergravity c-map.

Geometric structures on Lie groups with flat bi-invariant metric

Let L\subset V=\bR^{k,l} be a maximally isotropic subspace. It is shown that any simply connected Lie group with a bi-invariant flat pseudo-Riemannian metric of signature (k,l) is 2-step nilpotent and is defined by an element η\in Λ^3L\subset Λ^3V. If ηis of type (3,0)+(0,3) with respect to a skew-symmetric endomorphism J with J^2=\e Id, then the Lie group {\cal L}(η) is endowed with a left-invariant nearly Kähler structure if \e =-1 and with a left-invariant nearly para-Kähler structure if \e =+1. This construction exhausts all complete simply connected flat nearly (para-)Kähler manifolds. If η\neq 0 has rational coefficients with respect to some basis, then {\cal L}(η) admits a lattice Γ, and the quotient Γ\setminus {\cal L}(η) is a compact inhomogeneous nearly (para-)Kähler manifold. The first non-trivial example occurs in six dimensions.

Half-flat Structures and Special Holonomy

It was proven by Hitchin that any solution of his evolution equations for a half-flat SU(3)-structure on a compact six-manifold M defines an extension of M to a seven-manifold with holonomy in G_2. We give a new proof, which does not require the compactness of M. More generally, we prove that the evolution of any half-flat G-structure on a six-manifold M defines an extension of M to a Ricci-flat seven-manifold N, for any real form G of SL(3,C). If G is noncompact, then the holonomy group of N is a subgroup of the noncompact form G_2^* of G_2^C. Similar results are obtained for the extension of nearly half-flat structures by nearly parallel G_2- or G_2^*-structures, as well as for the extension of cocalibrated G_2- and G_2^*-structures by parallel Spin(7)- and Spin(3,4)-structures, respectively. As an application, we obtain that any six-dimensional homogeneous manifold with an invariant half-flat structure admits a canonical extension to a seven-manifold with a parallel G_2- or G_2^*-structure. For the group H_3 \times H_3, where H_3 is the three-dimensional Heisenberg group, we describe all left-invariant half-flat structures and develop a method to explicitly determine the resulting parallel G_2- or G_2^*-structure without integrating. In particular, we construct three eight-parameter families of metrics with holonomy equal to G_2 and G_2^*. Moreover, we obtain a strong rigidity result for the metrics induced by a half-flat structure (ω,ρ) on H_3 \times H_3 satisfying ω(Z,Z)=0 where Z denotes the centre. Finally, we describe the special geometry of the space of stable three-forms satisfying a reality condition. Considering all possible reality conditions, we find four different special Kähler manifolds and one special para-Kähler manifold.

Geometric construction of the r-map: from affine special real to special Kähler manifolds

We give an intrinsic definition of (affine very) special real manifolds and realise any such manifold $M$ as a domain in affine space equipped with a metric which is the Hessian of a cubic polynomial. We prove that the tangent bundle $N=TM$ carries a canonical structure of (affine) special Kähler manifold. This gives an intrinsic description of the $r$-map as the map $M\mapsto N=TM$. On the physics side, this map corresponds to the dimensional reduction of rigid vector multiplets from 5 to 4 space-time dimensions. We generalise this construction to the case when $M$ is any Hessian manifold.
