The number of fundamental constants from a spacetime-based perspective

We revisit Duff, Okun, and Veneziano's divergent views on the number of fundamental constants and argue that the issue can be set to rest by having spacetime as the starting point. This procedure disentangles the resolution in what depends on the assumed spacetime (whether relativistic or not) from the theories built over it. By defining that the number of fundamental constants equals the minimal number of independent standards necessary to express all observables, as assumed by Duff, Okun, and Veneziano, it is shown that the same units fixed by the apparatuses used to construct the spacetimes are enough to express all observables of the physical laws defined over them. As a result, the number of fundamental constants equals two in Galilei spacetime and one in relativistic spacetimes.

Neutrino physics and non-standard interactions

In most of the proposals for new physics beyond the standard model, neutrinos have new interactions and some of them have phenomenological consequences that, although at present they may seem purely academic, probably will have to be taken into account in the future neutrino experiments. Here we show that new interactions may imply the misidentification of the flavour of the neutrinos, and the experimental ability to distinguish neutrinos from antineutrinos.

An SU(5)$\otimes$Z_{13} Grand Unification Model

We propose an SU(5) grand unified model with an invisible axion and the unification of the three coupling constants which is in agreement with the values, at $M_Z$, of $α$, $α_s$, and $\sin^2θ_W$. A discrete, anomalous, $Z_{13}$ symmetry implies that the Peccei-Quinn symmetry is an automatic symmetry of the classical Lagrangian protecting, at the same time, the invisible axion against possible semi-classical gravity effects. Although the unification scale is of the order of the Peccei-Quinn scale the proton is stabilized by the fact that in this model the standard model fields form the SU(5) multiplets completed by new exotic fields and, also, because it is protected by the $Z_{13}$ symmetry.

The number of dimensional fundamental constants

We revisit, qualify, and objectively resolve the seemingly controversial question about what is the number of dimensional fundamental constants in Nature. For this purpose, we only assume that all we can directly measure are space and time intervals, and that this is enough to evaluate any physical observable. We conclude that the number of dimensional fundamental constants is two. We emphasize that this is an objective result rather than a "philosophical opinion", and we let it clear how it could be refuted in order to prove us wrong. Our conclusion coincides with Veneziano's string-theoretical one but our arguments are not based on any particular theory. As a result, this implies that one of the three usually considered fundamental constants "G", "c" or "h" can be eliminated and we show explicitly how this can be accomplished.

Neutrino-neutrino and neutrino-matter helicity flip interactions

Taking into account that neutrinos are massive particles and that they are produced mainly as states of negative helicity, we show that the neutral and charged current interactions change these neutrinos into transversally polarized states. This implies a considerable reduction of the neutrino flux when propagating through ordinary matter (electrons, protons and neutrons). The same happens when neutrinos propagate through the sea of relic neutrinos if these neutrinos are degenerate fermions. However, in this case the change of helicity depends on the value of the neutrino--anti-neutrino asymmetry.

The heavy top quark and right-handed currents

We consider a modification of the standard electroweak model with the third quark generation and the $τ$-lepton in vector representations of $SU(2)\otimes U(1)_Y$ electroweak symmetry. This is a new way to implement right-handed currents which are controlled by the usual Fermi constant, $G_F$, the weak mixing angle, $\sinθ_W$, and also by the right-handed mixing matrices which survive when the Lagrangian density is written in terms of the mass eigenstates. In this case there are also new CP violation phases.

Extra dimensions and color confinement

We consider an extension of the ordinary four dimensional Minkowski space by introducing additional dimensions which have their own Lorentz transformation. Particles can transform in a different way under each Lorentz group. We show that only quark interactions are slightly modified and that color confinement is automatic since these degrees of freedom run only in the extra dimensions. No compactification of the extra dimensions is needed.
