Dark monopoles

Monopoles have been a subject of much theoretical and experimental research since they were proposed to symmetrize Maxwell's equations. However, no experimental signature of their existence has been detected. Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain this lack of success. In here we generalize QED to a two photon theory where the extraordinary photon and the monopole belong to the dark sector, and the ordinary photon and the electron to the non-dark sector. A mixing interaction transforms both electron and monopole into dyons generating experimental consequences for indirect and direct monopole detection which we analyze.

Do heavy Monopoles hide from us ?

Dirac demonstrated that the existence of a single magnetic monopole in the universe could explain the discrete nature of electric charge. Magnetic monopoles naturally arise in most grand unified theories. However, the extensive experimental searches conducted thus far have not been successful. Here, we propose a mechanism in which magnetic monopoles bind deeply with neutral states, effectively hiding some of the properties of free monopoles. We explore various scenarios for these systems and analyze their detectability. In particular, one scenario is especially interesting, as it predicts a light state-an analog of an electron but with magnetic charge instead of electric charge-which we refer to as a magnetron.

Hybrid spectroscopy within the Graviton Soft-Wall model

In this analysis, the so-called holographic graviton soft-wall model (GSW), first developed to investigate the glueball spectrum, has been adopted to predict the masses of hybrids with different quantum numbers. Results have been compared with other models and lattice calculations. We have extended the GSW model by introducing two modifications based on anomalous dimensions in order to improve our agreement with other calculations and to remove the initial degeneracy not accounted for by lattice predictions. These modifications do not involve new parameters. The next step has been to identify which of our calculated states agree with the PDG data, leading to experimental hybrids. The procedure has been extended to include hybrids made of heavy quarks by incorporating the quark masses into the model.

The Phase Transition in the holographic Hard-Wall model

A Hawking-Page phase transition between AdS thermal and AdS Black Hole was presented as a mechanism for explaining the QCD deconfinement phase transition within holographic models. In order to implement temperature dependence in the confined phase we use a hard-wall AdS/QCD model, where the geometry at low temperatures is described also by a Black Hole metric. We then investigate the temperature dependence of glueball states described as gravitons propagating in deformed background spaces. Finally, we use potential models to physically describe the implications of our study.

Energy Loss of Monopolium in a Medium

We study the energy loss of excited monopolium in an atomic medium. We perform a classical calculation in line with a similar calculation performed for charged particles which leads in the non relativistic limit to the Bethe-Bloch formula except for the density dependence of the medium, which we do not consider in this paper. Our result shows that for maximally deformed Rydberg states the ionization of monopolium in a light atomic medium is similar to that of light ions.

Signatures of excited monopolium

We study electromagnetic properties of particles with magnetic moment and no charge using their behavior when traversing coils and solenoids. These particles via the Faraday-Lenz law create a current whose energy we calculate. We analyze both the case of very long lived, almost stable, particles and those with a finite lifetime. We use this development to study the behavior of monopolium a monopole-antimonopole bound state in its excited states.

Glueballs at high temperature within the Hard-Wall holographic model

In this investigation an holographic description of the deconfined phase transition of scalar and tensor glueballs is presented within the so called hard-wall model. The spectra of these bound states of gluons have been calculated from the linearized Einstein equations for a graviton propagating from a thermal $AdS_5$ space to an AdS Black-Hole. In this framework, the deconfined phase is reached via a two steps mechanism. We propose that the transition between the AdS thermal sector to the BH is described via a first order phase transition, with discontinuous masses at the critical temperature, which has been determined by Herzog's method of regulating the free energy densities. Then, the glueball masses diverge with increasing $T$ in the BH phase and thus lead to deconfined states à la Hagedorn.

Looking for monopolium excited states with electromagnetic detectors

We study the detection of particles with magnetic moment and no charge by using coils and solenoids. The detector uses the Faraday-Lenz law to create a current whose energy is measured. Our development can be applied to any particle with magnetic moment. The neutron is ideal to show our detector scheme for particles with long lifetimes and the result is encouraging. However, our interest lies in the detection of monopolium states which decays much faster than neutrons. The accelerator scenario with a relatively low monopole mass $\sim 1000$ GeV requires the generalization of the scheme to finite lifetimes. We use two descriptions, which we have called Dirac and Schwinger, (also $β$-coupling), schemes, in our study. The theoretical behavior of excited monopolia in coils teaches us many of their properties. However, their small production cross sections, given the achievable LHC luminosities, makes detection using coils difficult. Therefore, we generalize the discussion to cosmological heavy monopolium. Our scheme becomes useful for those and supplements detectors like MoEDAL and MAPP in distinguishing monopolia from other long lived particles.

Meson and glueball spectroscopy within the graviton soft wall model

The graviton soft wall model (GSW) provides a unified description of the scalar glueball and meson spectra with a unique energy scale. This success has led us to extend the analysis to the description of the spectra of other hadrons. We use this model to calculate masses of the odd and even ground states of glueballs for various spins, and show that the GSW model is able to reproduce the Regge trajectory of these systems. In addition, the spectra of the $ρ$, $a_1$ and the $η$ mesons will be addressed. Results are in excellent agreement with current experimental data.Furthermore such an achievement is obtained without any additional parameters. Indeed, the only two parameters appearing in these spectra are those that were previously fixed by the light scalar meson and glueball spectra. Finally, in order to describe the $π$ meson spectrum, a suitable modification of the dilaton profile function has been included in the analysis to properly take into account the Goldstone realization of chiral symmetry. The present investigation confirms that the GSW model provides an excellent description of the spectra of mesons and glueballs with only a small number of parameters unveiling a relevant predicting power.

Primordial monopolium as dark matter

The existence of monopoles is a characteristic signature of Kaluza-Klein multidimensional theories. The topology of these solutions is extremely interesting. The existence of a dipole solution, which we have associated to a monople-anti-monopole bound state, is the leitmotiv of this investigation. The dipole in its lowest energy state, which we here call also monopolium, is electromagnetically inert in free space interacting only gravitationally. Monopolium when interacting with time dependent magnetic fields acquires a time dependent induced magnetic moment and radiates. We have analyzed the most favorable astrophysical scenario for radiative monopolium and found that the amount of radiation is so small that is not detectable by conventional equipments. These findings suggest that Kaluza-Klein monopolium, if existent, would be a candidate for a primordial dark matter constituent.

Scalar spectrum in a graviton soft wall model

In this study we present a unified phenomenological analysis of the scalar glueball and scalar meson spectra within an AdS/QCD framework in the bottom up approach. For this purpose we generalize the recently developed graviton soft-wall (GSW) model, which has shown an excellent agreement with the lattice QCD glueball spectrum, to a description of glueballs and mesons with a unique energy scale. In this scheme, dilatonic effects, are incorporated in the metric as a deformation of the AdS space. We apply the model also to the heavy meson spectra with success. We obtain quadratic mass equations for all scalar mesons while the glueballs satisfy an almost linear mass equation. Besides their spectra, we also discuss the mixing of scalar glueball and light scalar meson states within a unified framework: the GSW model. To this aim, the light-front holographic approach, which connects the mode functions of AdS/QCD to the light-front wave functions, is applied. This relation provides the probabilistic interpretation required to properly investigate the mixing conditions.

Pure glueball states in a Light-Front holographic approach

A phenomenological analysis of the scalar glueball and scalar meson spectra is carried out by using the AdS/QCD framework in the bottom-up approach. The resulting spectra are in good agreement for glueballs with lattice QCD results and for mesons with PDG data. We make use of the relation between the mode functions in AdS/QCD and the wave functions in Light-Front $QCD$ to discuss the mixing of glueballs and mesons. The results of our investigation point out that above 2 GeV scalar particles will appear in almost degenerate pairs of unmixed glueball and mesons states leading to an interesting phenomenology whereby gluon dynamics could be well investigated.

Scattering of charged particles off monopole-antimonopole pairs

The Large Hadron Collider is reaching energies never achieved before allowing the search for exotic particles in the TeV mass range. In a continuing effort to find monopoles we discuss the effect of the magnetic dipole field created by a pair of monopole-anti-monopole or monopolium on the successive bunches of charged particles in the beam at LHC.

The Inhomogeneous Phase of Dense Skyrmion Matter

It was predicted qualitatively in ref.[1] that skyrmion matter at low density is stable in an inhomogeneous phase where skyrmions condensate into lumps while the remaining space is mostly empty. The aim of this paper is to proof quantitatively this prediction. In order to construct an inhomogeneous medium we distort the original FCC crystal to produce a phase of planar structures made of skyrmions. We implement mathematically these planar structures by means of the 't Hooft instanton solution using the Atiyah-Manton ansatz. The results of our calculation of the average density and energy confirm the prediction suggesting that the phase diagram of the dense skyrmion matter is a lot more complex than a simple phase transition from the skyrmion FCC crystal lattice to the half-skyrmion CC one. Our results show that skyrmion matter shares common properties with standard nuclear matter developing a skin and leading to a binding energy equation which resembles the Weiszaecker mass formula.

Scalar and Tensor Glueballs as Gravitons

The bottom-up approach of the AdS/CFT correspondence leads to the study of field equations in an $AdS_5$ background and from their solutions to the determination of the hadronic mass spectrum. We extend the study to the equations of $AdS_5$ gravitons and determine from them the glueball spectrum. We propose an original presentation of the results which facilitates the comparison of the various models with the spectrum obtained by lattice QCD. This comparison allows to draw some phenomenological conclusions.

Ion scattering on monopoles

Magnetic monopoles have been a subject of interest since Dirac established the relation between the existence of monopoles and charge quantization. The Dirac quantization condition bestows the monopole with a huge magnetic charge. We study the scattering of charged ions by monopoles and use backscattering techniques to devise a method to detect monopoles bound in matter.

A model calculation of double parton distribution functions of the pion

Two-parton correlations in the pion are investigated in terms of double parton distribution functions. A Poincaré covariant Light-Front framework has been adopted. As non perturbative input, the pion wave function obtained within the so-called soft-wall AdS/QCD model has been used. Results show how novel dynamical information on the structure of the pion, not accessible through one-body parton distribution, are encoded in double parton distribution functions.
