Universal Behavior and the Two-component Character of Magnetically Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

We present a detailed review of scaling behavior in the magnetically underdoped cuprate superconductors (hole dopings less than 0.20) and show that it reflects the presence of two coupled components throughout this doping regime: a non-Landau Fermi liquid and a spin liquid whose behavior maps onto the theoretical Monte Carlo calculations of the 2D Heisenberg model of localized Cu spins for most of its temperature domain. We use this mapping to extract the doping dependence of the strength, $f(x)$ of the spin liquid component and the effective interaction, J_eff(x) between the remnant localized spins that compose it; we find both decrease linearly with x as the doping level increases. We discuss the physical origin of pseudogap behavior and conclude that it is consistent with scenarios in which the both the large energy gaps found in the normal state and their subsequent superconductivity are brought about by the coupling between the Fermi liquid quasiparticles and the spin liquid excitations, and that differences in this coupling between the 1-2-3 and 2-1-4 materials can explain the measured differences in their superconducting transition temperatures and other properties.

The role of striction at magnetic and structural transitions in iron-pnictides

We discuss the role of striction in the intertwined magnetic and structural phase transitions in the underdoped iron-pnictides. The magneto-elastic coupling to acoustic modes is then derived and estimated in framework of the multiband spectrum for itinerant electrons with nesting features. We argue that the 1-st order character of the magneto-elastic phase transition originates from the lattice instabilities near the onset of spin-density wave order introducing, thus, a shear acoustic mode as a new order parameter. Taking non-harmonic termis in the lattice energy into account may explain the splitting of the structural and magnetic transitions in some oxypnictides. Fluctuations of the magnetic order parameter show up in the precursory temperature dependence of the elastic moduli.

Magnetic field-induced gapless state in multiband superconductors

We investigate theoretically the properties of s-wave multiband superconductors in the weak coupling (BCS) limit in the presence of pair-breaking effects of magnetic field. It is shown that a qualitatively new gapless superconducting state must appear in quasi-2D superconductors in magnetic fields parallel to the plane, corresponding to a Sarma state induced on one of the Fermi surfaces. The emergence of the new state in s-wave multiband superconductors in the absence of anisotropy or spin-orbit interaction is usually accompanied by a zero-temperature first-order metamagnetic phase transition. For anisotropic or non s-wave multiband superconductors the order of the zero-temperature metamagnetic transition depends on model parameters, and it may take the form of a smooth crossover. The details of the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram for multiband superconductors are investigated analytically at zero temperature and numerically at a finite temperature. It is shown the zero-temperatures first-order phase transition gives rise to a critical region on the B-T phase diagram. We suggest possible experiments to detect the new gapless state.

On superconducting and magnetic properties of iron-oxypnictides

Pairing symmetry in oxypnictides, a new family of multiband high-Tc superconductors, is partially imposed by the positions of multiple Fermi pockets, which itself can give rise to new order parameters, such as s+,- states or the state of dx^2-y^2 symmetry. Other pairing states may appear on small pockets for long range interactions, but they are expected to be sensitive to defects. We identify the competing antiferromagnetic order with the triplet exciton transition in the semi- metallic background and discuss whether its coexistence with superconductivity explains the doping dependence of Tc.

Gapless Fermi Surfaces in Superconducting CeCoIn5?

According to [M.A. Tanatar et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 067002 (2005)], in a multi-band d-wave superconductor CeCoIn5 electrons remain partially uncondensed. Interactions must induce superconducting order on all Fermi surfaces. We calculate specific heat and thermal conductivity in a two band model in presence of defects. Superconductivity originates on one Fermi surface, inducing a smaller gap on the other. Impurities diminish the induced gap and increase the density of states, restoring rapidly the Wiedemann-Franz law for this Fermi surface. Our calculations are in agreement with experiment.

Phenomenological model of protected behavior in the cuprate superconductors

By extending previous work on the scaling of low frequency magnetic properties of the 2-1-4 cuprates to the 1-2-3 materials, we arrive at a consistent phenomenological description of protected behavior in the pseudogap state of the magnetically underdoped cuprates. Between zero hole doping and a doping level of $\sim 0.22$ it reflects the presence of a mixture of an insulating spin liquid that produces the measured magnetic scaling behavior and a Fermi liquid that becomes superconducting for doping levels $x>0.06$. Our analysis suggests the existence of two quantum critical points, at doping levels, $x \sim 0.05$ and $x \sim 0.22$, and that d-wave superconductivity in the pseudogap region arises from quasiparticle-spin liquid interaction, i.e. magnetic interactions between quasiparticles in the Fermi liquid induced by their coupling to the spin liquid excitations.

Two-fluid behavior of the Kondo lattice in the 1/N slave boson approach

It has been recently shown by Nakatsuji, Pines, and Fisk [S. Nakatsuji, D. Pines, and Z. Fisk, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 016401 (2004)] from the phenomenological analysis of experiments in Ce1-xLaxCoIn5 and CeIrIn5 that thermodynamic and transport properties of Kondo lattices below coherence temperature can be very successfully described in terms of a two-fluid model, with Kondo impurity and heavy electron Fermi liquid contributions. We analyze thermodynamic properties of Kondo lattices using 1/N slave boson treatment of the periodic Anderson model and show that these two contributions indeed arise below the coherence temperature. We find that the Kondo impurity contribution to thermodynamics corresponds to thermal excitations into the flat portion of the energy spectrum.

Competition between phonon superconductivity and Kondo screening in mixed valence and heavy fermion compounds

We consider competition of Kondo effect and s-wave superconductivity in heavy fermion and mixed valence superconductors, using the phenomenological approach for the periodic Anderson model. Similar to the well known results for single-impurity Kondo effect in superconductors, we have found principal possibility of a re-entrant regime of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in heavy fermion superconductors in a narrow range of model parameters and concentration of f-electrons. Suppression of $T_c$ in mixed valence superconductors is much weaker. Our theory has most validity in the low-temperature Fermi liquid regime, without re-entrant behavior of $T_c$. To check its applicability, we performed the fit for the $x$-dependence of $T_c$ in Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Ru$_3$Si$_2$ and obtained an excellent agreement with the experimental data, although no re-entrance was found in this case. Other experimental data are discussed in the light of our theoretical analysis. In particular, we compare temperatures of the superconducting transition for some known homologs, i.e., the analog periodic lattice compounds with and without f-elements. For a few pairs of homologs superconductivity exists only in the heavy fermion materials, thus confirming uniqueness of superconductivity mechanisms for the latter. We suggest that for some other compounds the value of $T_c$ may remain of the same order in the two homologs, if superconductivity originates mainly on some light Fermi surface, but induces sizable superconducting gap on another Fermi surface, for which hybridization or other heavy fermion effects are more significant.

Ferromagnetism from localized deep impurities in magnetic semiconductors

We propose that localized defects in magnetic semiconductors act as deep impurities and can be described by the Anderson model. Within this model, hybridization of d-orbitals and p-orbitals gives rise to a non-RKKY indirect exchange mechanism, when the localized d-electrons are exchanged through both conduction and valence bands. For semiconductors with indirect band gap the non-RKKY part of exchange integral is antiferromagnetic, which suppresses ferromagnetism. In case of direct band gap, this exchange mechanism can, under certain conditions, lead to enhancement of ferromagnetism. The indirect exchange intergral is much stronger than RKKY, and can be sufficiently long range. Thus, a potentially new class of high-temperature magnetic semiconductors emerges, where doped carriers are not necessary to mediate ferromagnetism. Curie temperatures in such magnetic semiconductors are determined mostly by the interaction between localized impurities, not Zener mechanism. This effect could also be responsible for unusually high Curie temperatures in some magnetic semiconductors with direct band gap, such as GaMnAs.

Inhomogeneous LOFF phase revisited for surface superconductivity

We consider 2D surface superconductivity in high magnetic fields parallel to the surface. We demonstrate that the spin-orbit interaction at the surface changes the properties of the inhomogeneous superconducting Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state that develops above fields given by the paramagnetic criterion. Strong spin-orbit interaction significantly broadens the range of existence of the LOFF phase, which takes the form of periodic superconducting stripes running along the field direction on the surface, leading to the anisotropy of its properties. In connection with experiments by J.H. Schon et al. [Nature 914, 434 (2001)] on superconductivity of electrically doped films of the cuprate material CaCuO2, we also discuss this problem for the d-wave pairing to indicate the possibility of a re-orientation transition as the magnetic field direction is rotated in the plane parallel to the surface. Our results provide a tool for studying surface superconductivity as a function of doping.

Impurity correlations in dilute Kondo alloys

The single impurity Kondo model is often used to describe metals with dilute concentrations (n_i) of magnetic impurities. Here we examine how dilute the impurities must be for this to be valid by developing a virial expansion in impurity density. The O(n_i^2) term is determined from results on the 2-impurity Kondo problem by averaging over the RKKY coupling. The non-trivial fixed point of the 2-impurity problem could produce novel singularities in the heat capacity of dilute alloys at O(n_i^2).

Exotic ground states and impurities in multiband superconductors

We consider the effect of isotropic impurity scattering on the exotic superconducting states that arise from the usual BCS mechanism in substances of cubic and hexagonal symmetry where the Fermi surface contains inequivalent but degenerate pockets (e.g. around several points of high symmetry). As examples we look at CeCo$_2$, CeRu$_2$, and LaB$_6$; all of which have such Fermi surface topologies and the former exhibits unconventional superconducting behavior. We find that while these non s-wave states are suppressed by non-magnetic impurities, the suppression is much weaker than would be expected for unconventional superconductors with isotropic non-magnetic impurity scattering.

Ferromagnetism and superstructure in Ca_{1-x}La_xB_6

We critically investigate the model of a doped excitonic insulator, which recently has been invoked to explain some experimental properties of the ferromagnetic state in Ca_{1-x}La_xB_6. We demonstrate that the ground state of this model is intrinsically unstable towards the appearance of a superstructure. In addition, the model would lead to a phase separation regime and the domain structure which may be prevented by the Coulomb forces only. Recent experiments indicate that a superstructure may indeed show up in this material.

Conventional mechanisms for "exotic" superconductivity

We consider the pairing state due to the usual BCS mechanism in substances of cubic and hexagonal symmetry where the Fermi surface forms pockets around several points of high symmetry. We find that the symmetry imposed on the multiple pocket positions could give rise to a multidimensional nontrivial superconducting order parameter. The time reversal symmetry in the pairing state is broken. We suggest several candidate substances where such ordering may appear, and discuss means by which such a phase may be identified.

Coherent transport and nonlocality in mesoscopic SNS junctions: anomalous magnetic interference patterns

We show that in {\em ballistic} mesoscopic SNS junctions the period of critical current vs. magnetic flux dependence (magnetic interference pattern), $I_c(Φ)$, changes {\em continuously and non-monotonically} from $Φ_0$ to $2Φ_0$ as the length-to-width ratio of the junction grows, or temperature drops. In {\em diffusive} mesoscopic junctions the change is even more drastic, with the first zero of $I_c(Φ)$ appearing at $3Φ_0$. The effect is a manifestation of nonlocal relation between the supercurrent density and superfluid velocity in the normal part of the system, with the characteristic scale $ξ_T = \hbar v_F/2πk_BT$ (ballistic limit) or $\tildeξ_T = \sqrt{\hbar D/2πk_BT}$ (diffusive limit), the normal metal coherence length, and arises due to restriction of the quasiparticle phase space near the lateral boundaries of the junction. It explains the $2Φ_0$-periodicity recently observed by Heida et al. (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 57}, R5618 (1998)). We obtained explicit analytical expressions for the magnetic interference pattern for a junction with an arbitrary length-to-width ratio. Experiments are proposed to directly observe the $Φ_0\to 2Φ_0$- and $Φ_0\to 3Φ_0$-transitions.

Finite-size scaling for the S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain

Corrections to the asymptotic correlation function in a Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain are known to vanish slowly (logarithmically) as a function of the distance r or the chain size L. This leads to significant differences with numerical results. We calculate the sub-leading logarithmic corrections to the finite-size correlation function, using renormalization group improved perturbation theory, and compare the result with numerical data.

The Screening Cloud in the k-Channel Kondo Model: Perturbative and Large-k Results

We demonstrate the existence of a large Kondo screening cloud in the k-channel Kondo model using both renormalization group improved perturbation theory and the large-k limit. We study position (r) dependent spin Green's functions in both static and equal time cases. The equal-time Green's function provides a natural definition of the screening cloud profile, in which the large Kondo scale appears. At large distances it consists of both a slowly varying piece and a piece which oscillates at twice the Fermi wave-vector. This function is calculated at all r in the large-k limit. Static Green's functions (Knight shift or susceptibility) consist only of a term oscillating at 2kF, and appear to factorize into a function of r times a function of T for rT << vF, in agreement with NMR experiments. Most of the integrated susceptibility comes from the impurity-impurity part with conduction electron contributions suppressed by powers of the bare Kondo coupling. The single-channel and overscreened multi-channel cases are rather similar although anomalous power-laws occur in the latter case at large r and low T due to irrelevant operator corrections.
