Weighted Diophantine approximation on manifolds

We establish a weighted simultaneous Khintchine-type theorem, both convergence and divergence, for all nondegenerate manifolds, which answers a problem posed in [Math. Ann., 337(4):769-796, 2007]. This extends the main results of [Acta Math., 231:1-30, 2023] and [Ann. of Math. (2), 175(1):187-235, 2012] in the weighted set-up. As a by-product of our method, we also obtain a multiplicative Khintchine-type convergence theorem for all nondegenerate manifolds, which is a simultaneous analogue of the celebrated result of Bernik, Kleinbock, and Margulis for dual approximation.

The dimension of well approximable numbers

In this survey article, we explore a central theme in Diophantine approximation inspired by a celebrated result of Besicovitch on the Hausdorff dimension of well approximable real numbers. We outline some of the key developments stemming from Besicovitch's result, with a focus on the Mass Transference Principle, Ubiquity and Diophantine approximation on manifolds and fractals. We highlight the subtle yet profound connections between number theory and fractal geometry, and discuss several open problems at their intersection.

Twisted Diophantine approximation on manifolds

In twisted Diophantine approximation, for a fixed $m\times n$ matrix $\boldsymbol\alpha$ one is interested in sets of vectors $\boldsymbol\beta\in\mathbb R^m$ such that the system of affine forms $\mathbb R^n \ni \mathbf q \mapsto \boldsymbol\alpha\mathbf q + \boldsymbol\beta \in \mathbb R^m$ satisfies some given Diophantine condition. In this paper we introduce the notion of manifolds which are of $\boldsymbol\alpha$-twisted Khintchine type for convergence or divergence. We provide sufficient conditions under which nondegenerate analytic manifolds exhibit this twisted Khintchine-type behaviour. Furthermore, we investigate the intersection properties of the sets of $\boldsymbol\alpha$-twisted badly approximable and well approximable vectors with nondegenerate manifolds.

Rational points near manifolds and Khintchine theorem

In this paper, we complete the long-standing challenge to establish a Khintchine-type theorem for arbitrary nondegenerate manifolds in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, our main result finally removes the analyticity assumption from the Khintchine type theorem proved in [Ann. of Math. 175 (2012), 187-235]. Furthermore, we obtain a Jarník-type refinement of our main result, which uses Hausdorff measures. The results are also obtained in the inhomogeneous setting. The proofs are underpinned by a sharper version of a `quantitative nondivergence' result of Bernik--Kleinbock--Margulis and a duality argument which we use to study rational points near manifolds.

p-adic root separation and the discriminant of integer polynomials

In this paper we investigate the following related problems: (A) the separation of $p$-adic roots of integer polynomials of fixed degree and bounded height; and (B) counting integer polynomials of a fixed degree and bounded height with discriminant divisible by a (large) power of a fixed prime. One of the consequences of our findings is the existence, for all large $Q>1$, of $Q^{2/n}$ integer irreducible polynomials $P$ of degree $n$ and height $\asymp Q$ with an almost prime power discriminant of maximal size, that is $|D(P)|\asymp Q^{2n-2}$ and $D(P)=p^kC_P$ with $C_P\in\mathbb{Z}$ satisfying $|C_P|\ll1$. Our method generalises techniques developed for the real case and relies on a quantitative non-divergence estimate developed by Kleinbock and Tomanov.

Good functions, measures, and the Kleinbock-Tomanov conjecture

In this paper we prove a conjecture of Kleinbock and Tomanov \cite[Conjecture~FP]{KT} on Diophantine properties of a large class of fractal measures on $\mathbb{Q}_p^n$. More generally, we establish the $p$-adic analogues of the influential results of Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Weiss \cite{KLW} on Diophantine properties of friendly measures. We further prove the $p$-adic analogue of one of the main results in \cite{Kleinbock-exponent} due to Kleinbock concerning Diophantine inheritance of affine subspaces, which answers a question of Kleinbock. One of the key ingredients in the proofs of \cite{KLW} is a result on $(C, α)$-good functions whose proof crucially uses the mean value theorem. Our main technical innovation is an alternative approach to establishing that certain functions are $(C, α)$-good in the $p$-adic setting. We believe this result will be of independent interest.

Borel-Cantelli, zero-one laws and inhomogeneous Duffin-Schaeffer

The most versatile version of the classical divergence Borel-Cantelli lemma shows that for any divergent sequence of events $E_n$ in a probability space satisfying a quasi-independence condition, its corresponding limsup set $E_\infty$ has positive probability. In particular, it provides a lower bound on the probability of $E_\infty$. In this paper we establish a new version of this classical result which guarantees, under an additional mild assumption, that the probability of $E_\infty$ is not just positive but is one. Unlike existing optimal results, it is applicable within the setting of arbitrary probability spaces. We then go onto to consider a range of applications in number theory and dynamical systems. These include new results on the inhomogeneous Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture. In particular, we establish alternatives to the classical (homogeneous) zero-one laws of Cassels and Gallagher and use them to resolve the so-called weak Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture for an arbitrary rational inhomogeneous shift. As a bi-product, we establish the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with congruence relations. The applications to dynamical systems include new characterisations of Borel-Cantelli sequences and new dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemmas, as well as characterising Khintchine-type sequences for shrinking targets.

Bad is null

In this paper we develop a general framework of badly approximable points in a metric space $X$ equipped with a $σ$-finite doubling Borel regular measure $μ$. We establish that under mild assumptions the $μ$-measure of the set of badly approximable points is always zero. The framework can be applied to a variety of settings in Diophantine approximation and dynamical systems, which we also consider, including weighted and $S$-arithmetic Diophantine approximations, Diophantine approximation on manifolds and intrinsic approximations on fractals.

Rectangular shrinking targets for $\mathbb{Z}^m$ actions on tori: well and badly approximable systems

In this paper we investigate the shrinking target property for irrational rotations. This was first studied by Kurzweil (1951) and has received considerable interest of late. Using a new approach, we generalize results of Kim (2007) and Shapira (2013) by proving a weighted effective analogue of the shrinking target property. Furthermore, our results are established in the much wider $S$-arithmetic setting.

Khintchine's theorem and Diophantine approximation on manifolds

In this paper we initiate a new approach to studying approximations by rational points to points on smooth submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our main result is a convergence Khintchine type theorem for arbitrary nondegenerate submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$, which resolves a longstanding problem in the theory of Diophantine approximation. Furthermore, we refine this result using Hausdorff $s$-measures and consequently obtain the exact value of the Hausdorff dimension of $τ$-well approximable points lying on any nondegenerate submanifold for a range of Diophantine exponents $τ$ close to $1/n$. Our approach uses geometric and dynamical ideas together with a new technique of `generic and special parts'. In particular, we establish sharp upper bounds for the number of rational points of bounded height lying near the generic part of a non-degenerate manifold. In turn, we give an explicit exponentially small bound for the measure of the special part of the manifold. The latter uses a result of Bernik, Kleinbock and Margulis.

The Divergence Borel-Cantelli Lemma revisited

Let $(Ω, \mathcal{A}, μ)$ be a probability space. The classical Borel-Cantelli Lemma states that for any sequence of $μ$-measurable sets $E_i$ ($i=1,2,3,\dots$), if the sum of their measures converges then the corresponding $\limsup$ set $E_\infty$ is of measure zero. In general the converse statement is false. However, it is well known that the divergence counterpart is true under various additional 'independence' hypotheses. In this paper we revisit these hypotheses and establish both sufficient and necessary conditions for $E_\infty$ to have either positive or full measure.

Simultaneous p-adic Diophantine approximation

The goal of this paper is to develop the theory of weighted Diophantine approximation of rational numbers to $p$-adic numbers. Firstly, we establish complete analogues of Khintchine's theorem, the Duffin-Schaeffer theorem and the Jarník-Besicovitch theorem for `weighted' simultaneous Diophantine approximation in the $p$-adic case. Secondly, we obtain a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of weighted simultaneously approximable points lying on $p$-adic manifolds. This is valid for very general classes of curves and manifolds and have natural constraints on the exponents of approximation. The key tools we use in our proofs are the Mass Transference Principle, including its recent extension due to Wang and Wu, and a Zero-One law for weighted $p$-adic approximations established in this paper.

Dirichlet is not just Bad and Singular

It is well known that in dimension one the set of Dirichlet improvable real numbers consists precisely of badly approximable and singular numbers. We show that in higher dimensions this is not the case by proving that there exist continuum many Dirichlet improvable vectors that are neither badly approximable nor singular. This is a consequence of a stronger statement that involves very well approximable points. In the last section we formulate the notion of intermediate Dirichlet improvable sets concerning approximations by rational planes of every intermediate dimension and show that they coincide. This naturally extends a classical theorem of Davenport and Schmidt (1969) which states that the simultaneous form of Dirichlet's theorem is improvable if and only if the dual form is improvable. Consequently, our main "continuum" result is equally valid for the corresponding intermediate Diophantine sets of badly approximable, singular and Dircihlet improvable points.

Winning property of badly approximable points on curves

In this paper we prove that badly approximable points on any analytic non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is an absolute winning set. This confirms a key conjecture in the area stated by Badziahin and Velani (2014) which represents a far-reaching generalisation of Davenport's problem from the 1960s. Amongst various consequences of our main result is a solution to Bugeaud's problem on real numbers badly approximable by algebraic numbers of arbitrary degree. The proof relies on new ideas from fractal geometry and homogeneous dynamics.

Bad($\mathbf{w}$) is hyperplane absolute winning

In 1998 Kleinbock conjectured that any set of weighted badly approximable $d\times n$ real matrices is a winning subset in the sense of Schmidt's game. In this paper we prove this conjecture in full for vectors in $\mathbf{R}^d$ in arbitrary dimensions by showing that the corresponding set of weighted badly approximable vectors is hyperplane absolute winning. The proof uses the Cantor potential game played on the support of Ahlfors regular absolutely decaying measures and the quantitative non-divergence estimate for a class of fractal measures due to Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss and Weiss. To establish the existence of a relevant winning strategy in the Cantor potential game we introduce a new approach using two independent diagonal actions on the space of lattices.

A lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of weighted simultaneously approximable points over manifolds

Given a weight vector $τ=(τ_{1}, \dots, τ_{n}) \in \mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}$ with each $τ_{i}$ bounded by certain constraints, we obtain a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of $τ$-approximable points points over a manifold $\mathcal{M}$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is twice continuously differentiable. From this we produce a lower bound for the set of $ψ$-approximable points over a manifold where $ψ$ is a general approximation function with certain limits. The proof is based on a technique developed by Beresnevich et al. in arXiv:1712.03761, but we use an alternative mass transference style theorem.

Number Theory meets Wireless Communications: an introduction for dummies like us

In this chapter we introduce the theory of Diophantine approximation via a series of basic examples from information theory relevant to wireless communications. In particular, we discuss Dirichlet's theorem, badly approximable points, Dirichlet improvable and singular points, the metric (probabilistic) theory of Diophantine approximation including the Khintchine-Groshev theorem and the theory of Diophantine approximation on manifolds. We explore various number theoretic approaches used in the analysis of communication characteristics such as Degrees of Freedom (DoF). In particular, we improve the result of Motahari et al regarding the DoF of a two-user X-channel. In essence, we show that the total DoF can be achieved for all (rather than almost all) choices of channel coefficients with the exception of a subset of strictly smaller dimension than the ambient space. The improvement utilises the concept of jointly non-singular points that we introduce and a general result of Kadyrov et al on the $δ$-escape of mass in the space of lattices. We also discuss follow-up open problems that incorporate a breakthrough of Cheung and more generally Das et al on the dimension of the set of singular points.

Quantitative non-divergence and Diophantine approximation on manifolds

The goal of this survey is to discuss the Quantitative non-Divergence estimate on the space of lattices and present a selection of its applications. The topics covered include extremal manifolds, Khintchine-Groshev type theorems, rational points lying close to manifolds and badly approximable points on manifolds. The main emphasis is on the role of the Quantitative non-Divergence estimate in the aforementioned topics within the theory of Diophantine approximation, and therefore this paper should not be regarded as a comprehensive overview of the area.
