Imaging and controlling vortex dynamics in mesoscopic superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor arrays

Harnessing the properties of vortices in superconductors is crucial for fundamental science and technological applications; thus, it has been an ongoing goal to locally probe and control vortices. Here, we use a scanning probe technique that enables studies of vortex dynamics in superconducting systems by leveraging the resonant behavior of a raster-scanned, magnetic-tipped cantilever. This experimental setup allows us to image and control vortices, as well as extract key energy scales of the vortex interactions. Applying this technique to lattices of superconductor island arrays on a metal, we obtain a variety of striking spatial patterns that encode information about the energy landscape for vortices in the system. We interpret these patterns in terms of local vortex dynamics and extract the relative strengths of the characteristic energy scales in the system, such as the vortex-magnetic field and vortex-vortex interaction strengths, as well as the vortex chemical potential. We also demonstrate that the relative strengths of the interactions can be tuned and show how these interactions shift with an applied bias. The high degree of tunability and local nature of such vortex imaging and control not only enable new understanding of vortex interactions, but also have potential applications in more complex systems such as those relevant to quantum computing.

Majorana zero modes and their bosonization

The simplest continuum model of a one-dimensional non-interacting superconducting fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase is studied in great detail using analytical methods. In a first step, we present a full exact diagonalization of the fermionic Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian for a system of finite length and with open boundaries. In particular, we derive exact analytical expressions for the Majorana zero modes emerging in the topologically non-trivial phase, revealing their spatial localization, their transformation properties under symmetry operations, and the exact finite-size energy splitting of the associated quasi-degenerate ground states. We then proceed to analyze the model via exact operator bosonization in both open and closed geometries. In the closed wire geometry, we demonstrate fermion parity switching from twisting boundary conditions in the topologically non-trivial phase. For the open wire, on the other hand, we first take a semiclassical approach employing the Mathieu equation to study the two quasi-degenerate ground states as well as their energy splitting at finite system sizes. We then finally derive the exact forms of the Majorana zero modes in the bosonic language using vertex-algebra techniques. These modes are verified to be in exact agreement with the results obtained from the fermionic description. The complementary viewpoints provided by the fermionic and bosonic formulations of the superconducting SPT phase are reconciled, allowing us to provide a complete and exact account of how Majorana zero modes manifest in a bosonized description of an SPT phase.

Phase Space Entanglement Spectrum

We generalize the position- and momentum-space entanglement cuts to a family of cuts corresponding to regions in the classical phase space. We explicitly compute the entanglement spectra of free fermionic many-body wavefunctions for a family of phase space entanglement cuts that continuously interpolates between position- and momentum-space cuts. For inversion symmetric wavefunctions, the phase space entanglement spectrum possess a chiral symmetry, to which a topological index can be associated.

Embedded Topological Insulators

We present a generalization of free fermionic topological insulators that are composed of topological subsystems of differing dimensionality. We specifically focus on topological subsystems of nonzero co-dimension are embedded within a trivial insulating environment. A general procedure is described to isolate and classify such embedded topological insulators and we present three representative examples in varying dimensions and symmetry classes. Moreover, we demonstrate with concrete examples that the presence of periodically embedded topological insulators in an otherwise trivially classified system can lead to topologically non-trivial physical phenomena on crystalline defects; namely, novel topological surface/edge modes at stacking faults and partial edge dislocations.

Effective field theory of an anomalous Hall metal from interband quantum fluctuations

We construct an effective field theory, a two-dimensional two-component metallic system described by a model with two Fermi surfaces ("pockets"). This model describes a translationally invariant metallic system with two types of fermions, each with its own Fermi surface, with forward scattering interactions. This model, in addition to the $O(2)$ rotational invariance, has a $U(1) \times U(1)$ symmetry of separate charge conservation for each Fermi surface. For sufficiently attractive interactions in the $d$-wave (quadrupolar) channel this model has an interesting phase diagram that includes a spontaneously generated anomalous Hall metal phase. We derive the Landau-Ginzburg effective action of quadrupolar order parameter fields which enjoys an $O(2)\times U(1)$ global symmetry associated to spatial isotropy and the internal $U(1)$ relative phase symmetries respectively. We show that the order parameter theory is dynamically local with a dynamical scaling of $z=2$ and perform a one-loop renormalization group analysis of the Landau-Ginzburg theory. The electronic liquid crystal phases that result from spontaneous symmetry breaking are studied and we show the presence of Landau damped Nambu-Goldstone modes at low momenta that is a signature of non-Fermi liquid behavior. Electromagnetic linear response is also analyzed in both the normal and symmetry broken phases from the point of view of the order parameter theory. The nature of the coupling of electromagnetism to the order parameter fields in the normal phase is non-minimal and decidedly contains a precursor to the anomalous Hall response in the form of a order-parameter-dependent Chern-Simons term in the effective action.

Holographic Dynamics from Multiscale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz

The Multiscale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA) is a tensor network based variational ansatz that is capable of capturing many of the key physical properties of strongly correlated ground states such as criticality and topological order. MERA also shares many deep relationships with the AdS/CFT (gauge-gravity) correspondence by realizing a UV complete holographic duality within the tensor networks framework. Motivated by this, we have re-purposed the MERA tensor network as an analysis tool to study the real-time evolution of the 1D transverse Ising model in its low energy excited state sector. We performed this analysis by allowing the ancilla qubits of the MERA tensor network to acquire quantum fluctuations, which yields a unitary transform between the physical (boundary) and ancilla qubit (bulk) Hilbert spaces. This then defines a reversible quantum circuit which is used as a `holographic transform' to study excited states and their real-time dynamics from the point of the bulk ancillae. In the gapped paramagnetic phase of the transverse field Ising model, we demonstrate the holographic duality between excited states induced by single spin-flips (Ising `magnons') acting on the ground state and single ancilla qubit spin-flips. The single ancillae qubit excitation is shown to be stable in the bulk under real-time evolution and hence defines a stable holographic quasiparticle which we have named the `hologron'. The `dictionary' between the bulk and boundary is determined and realizes many features of the holographic correspondence in a non-CFT limit of the boundary theory. As an added spin-off, this dictionary together with the extension to multi-hologron sectors gives us a systematic way to construct quantitatively accurate low energy effective Hamiltonians.

Of Bulk and Boundaries: Generalized Transfer Matrices for Tight-Binding Models

We construct a generalized transfer matrix corresponding to noninteracting tight-binding lattice models, which can subsequently be used to compute the bulk bands as well as the edge states. Crucially, our formalism works even in cases where the hopping matrix is non-invertible. Following Hatsugai [PRL 71, 3697 (1993)], we explicitly construct the energy Riemann surfaces associated with the band structure for a specific class of systems which includes systems like Chern insulator, Dirac semimetal and graphene. The edge states can then be interpreted as non-contractible loops, with the winding number equal to the bulk Chern number. For these systems, the transfer matrix is symplectic, and hence we also describe the windings associated with the edge states on $Sp(2, \mathbb{R})$ and interpret the corresponding winding number as a Maslov index.

Interaction effects on topological phase transitions via numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo calculations

We theoretically study topological phase transitions in four generalized versions of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with up to $2\times 18^2$ sites. All models are free of the fermion-sign problem allowing numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations to be performed to extremely low temperatures. We numerically compute the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant and spin Chern number $C_σ$ directly from the zero-frequency single-particle Green's functions, and study the topological phase transitions driven by the tight-binding parameters at different on-site interaction strengths. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant and spin Chern number, which are complementary to each another, characterize the topological phases and identify the critical points of topological phase transitions. Although the numerically determined phase boundaries are nearly identical for different system sizes, we find strong system-size dependence of the spin Chern number, where quantized values are only expected upon approaching the thermodynamic limit. For the Hubbard models we considered, the QMC results show that correlation effects lead to shifts in the phase boundaries relative to those in the non-interacting limit, without any spontaneously symmetry breaking. The interaction-induced shift is non-perturbative in the interactions and cannot be captured within a "simple" self-consistent calculation either, such as Hartree-Fock. Furthermore, our QMC calculations suggest that quantum fluctuations from interactions stabilize topological phases in systems where the one-body terms preserve the $D_3$ symmetry of the lattice, and destabilize topological phases when the one-body terms break the $D_3$ symmetry.

Topological order in a correlated three-dimensional topological insulator

Motivated by experimental progress in the growth of heavy transition metal oxides, we theoretically study a class of lattice models of interacting fermions with strong spin-orbit coupling. Focusing on interactions of intermediate strength, we derive a low-energy effective field theory for a fully gapped, topologically ordered, fractionalized state with an eight-fold ground-state degeneracy. This state is a fermionic symmetry-enriched topological phase with particle-number conservation and time-reversal symmetry. The topological terms in the effective field theory describe a quantized magnetoelectric response and nontrivial mutual braiding statistics of dynamical extended vortex loops with emergent fermions in the bulk. We explicitly compute the expected mutual statistics in a specific model on the pyrochlore lattice within a slave-particle mean-field theory. We argue that our model also provides a possible condensed-matter realization of oblique confinement.

Entanglement Entropy and Spectra of the One-dimensional Kugel-Khomskii Model

We study the quantum entanglement of the spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the one- dimensional Kugel-Khomskii model, which includes both gapless and gapped phases, using analytical techniques and exact diagonalization with up to 16 sites. We compute the entanglement entropy, and the entanglement spectra using a variety of partitions or "cuts" of the Hilbert space, including two distinct real-space cuts and a momentum-space cut. Our results show the Kugel-Khomski model possesses a number of new features not previously encountered in studies of the entanglement spectra. Notably, we find robust gaps in the entanglement spectra for both gapped and gapless phases with the orbital partition, and show these are not connected to each other. We observe the counting of the low-lying entanglement eigenvalues shows that the "virtual edge" picture which equates the low-energy Hamiltonian of a virtual edge, here one gapless leg of a two-leg ladder, to the "low-energy" entanglement Hamiltonian breaks down for this model, even though the equivalence has been shown to hold for similar cut in a large class of closely related models. In addition, we show that a momentum space cut in the gapless phase leads to qualitative differences in the entanglement spectrum when compared with the same cut in the gapless spin-1/2 Heisenberg spin chain. We emphasize the new information content in the entanglement spectra compared to the entanglement entropy, and using quantum entanglement present a refined phase diagram of the model. Using analytical arguments, exploiting various symmetries of the model, and applying arguments of adiabatic continuity from two exactly solvable points of the model, we are also able to prove several results regarding the structure of the low-lying entanglement eigenvalues.

Exact Chiral Spin Liquids and Mean-Field Perturbations of Gamma Matrix Models on the Ruby Lattice

We theoretically study an exactly solvable Gamma matrix generalization of the Kitaev spin model on the ruby lattice, which is a honeycomb lattice with "expanded" vertices and links. We find this model displays an exceptionally rich phase diagram that includes: (i) gapless phases with stable spin fermi surfaces, (ii) gapless phases with low-energy Dirac cones and quadratic band touching points, and (iii) gapped phases with finite Chern numbers possessing the values {\pm}4,{\pm}3,{\pm}2 and {\pm}1. The model is then generalized to include Ising-like interactions that break the exact solvability of the model in a controlled manner. When these terms are dominant, they lead to a trivial Ising ordered phase which is shown to be adiabatically connected to a large coupling limit of the exactly solvable phase. In the limit when these interactions are weak, we treat them within mean-field theory and present the resulting phase diagrams. We discuss the nature of the transitions between various phases. Our results highlight the richness of possible ground states in closely related magnetic systems.

Visualizing landscapes of the superconducting gap in heterogeneous superconductor thin films: geometric influences on proximity effects

The proximity effect is a central feature of superconducting junctions as it underlies many important applications in devices and can be exploited in the design of new systems with novel quantum functionality. Recently, exotic proximity effects have been observed in various systems, such as superconductor-metallic nanowires and graphene-superconductor structures. However, it is still not clear how superconducting order propagates spatially in a heterogeneous superconductor system. Here we report intriguing influences of junction geometry on the proximity effect for a 2D heterogeneous superconductor system comprised of 2D superconducting islands on top of a surface metal. Depending on the local geometry, the superconducting gap induced in the surface metal region can either be confined to the boundary of the superconductor, in which the gap decays within a short distance (~ 15 nm), or can be observed nearly uniformly over a distance of many coherence lengths due to non-local proximity effects.

Exactly Solvable Topological Chiral Spin Liquid with Random Exchange

We extend the Yao-Kivelson decorated honeycomb lattice Kitaev model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99,247203 (2007)] of an exactly solvable chiral spin liquid by including disordered exchange couplings. We have determined the phase diagram of this system and found that disorder enlarges the region of the topological non-Abelian phase with finite Chern number. We study the energy level statistics as a function of disorder and other parameters in the Hamiltonian, and show that the phase transition between the non-Abelian and Abelian phases of the model at large disorder can be associated with pair annihilation of extended states at zero energy. Analogies to integer quantum Hall systems, topological Anderson insulators, and disordered topological Chern insulators are discussed.

Topological Insulators and Quantum Spin Liquids

In this paper we review some connections recently discovered between topological insulators and certain classes of quantum spin liquids, focusing on two and three spatial dimensions. In two dimensions we show the integer quantum Hall effect plays a key role in relating topological insulators and chiral spin liquids described by fermionic excitations, and we describe a procedure for "generating" a certain class of topological states. In three dimensions we discuss interesting relationships between certain quantum spin liquids and interacting "exotic" variants of topological insulators. We focus attention on better understanding interactions in topological insulators, and the phases nearby in parameter space that might result from moderate to strong interactions in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. We stress that oxides with heavy transition metal ions, which often host a competition between electron interactions and spin-orbit coupling, are an excellent place to search for unusual topological phenomena and other unconventional phases.

Exact Chiral Spin Liquid with Stable Spin Fermi Surface on the Kagome Lattice

We study an exactly solvable quantum spin model of Kitaev type on the kagome lattice. We find a rich phase diagram which includes a topological (gapped) chiral spin liquid with gapless chiral edge states, and a gapless chiral spin liquid phase with a spin Fermi surface. The ground state of the current model contains an odd number of electrons per unit cell which qualitatively distinguishes it from previously studied exactly solvable models with a spin Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the spin Fermi surface is stable against weak perturbations.
