Kostant's pair of Lie type and conformal embeddings

We deal with some aspects of the theory of conformal embeddings of affine vertex algebras, providing a new proof of the Symmetric Space Theorem and a criterion for conformal embeddings of equal rank subalgebras. We finally study some examples of embeddings at the critical level. We prove a criterion for embeddings at the critical level which enables us to prove equality of certain central elements.

On classification of non-equal rank affine conformal embeddings and applications

We complete the classification of conformal embeddings of a maximally reductive subalgebra $\mathfrak k$ into a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ at non-integrable non-critical levels $k$ by dealing with the case when $\mathfrak k$ has rank less than that of $\mathfrak g$. We describe some remarkable instances of decomposition of the vertex algebra $V_{k}(\mathfrak g)$ as a module for the vertex subalgebra generated by $\mathfrak k$. We discuss decompositions of conformal embeddings and constructions of new affine Howe dual pairs at negative levels. In particular, we study an example of conformal embeddings $A_1 \times A_1 \hookrightarrow C_3$ at level $k=-1/2$, and obtain explicit branching rules by applying certain $q$-series identity. In the analysis of conformal embedding $A_1 \times D_4 \hookrightarrow C_8$ at level $k=-1/2$ we detect subsingular vectors which do not appear in the branching rules of the classical Howe dual pairs.

Conformal embeddings of affine vertex algebras in minimal $W$-algebras II: decompositions

We present methods for computing the explicit decomposition of the minimal simple affine $W$-algebra $W_k(\mathfrak g, θ)$ at a conformal level $k$ as a module for its maximal affine subalgebra $\mathcal V_k(\mathfrak g^{\natural})$. A particular emphasis is given on the application of affine fusion rules to the determination of branching rules. In almost all cases when $\mathfrak g^{\natural}$ is a semisimple Lie algebra, we show that, for a suitable conformal level $k$, $W_k(\mathfrak g, θ)$ is isomorphic to an extension of $\mathcal V_k(\mathfrak g^{\natural})$ by its simple module. We are able to prove that in certain cases $W_k(\mathfrak g, θ)$ is a simple current extension of $\mathcal V_k(\mathfrak g^{\natural})$. In order to analyze more complicated non simple current extensions at conformal levels, we present an explicit realization of the simple $W$-algebra $W_{k}(sl(4), θ)$ at $k=-8/3$. We prove, as conjectured in arXiv:1407.1527, that $W_{k}(sl(4), θ)$ is isomorphic to the vertex algebra $\mathcal R^{(3)}$, and construct infinitely many singular vectors using screening operators. We also construct a new family of simple current modules for the vertex algebra $V_k (sl(n))$ at certain admissible levels and for $V_k (sl(m | n)), m\ne n, m,n\geq 1$ at arbitrary levels.

Representations of superconformal algebras and mock theta functions

It is well known that the normaized characters of integrable highest weight modules of given level over an affine Lie algebra $\hat{\frak{g}}$ span an $SL_2(\mathbf{Z})$-invariant space. This result extends to admissible $\hat{\frak{g}}$-modules, where $\frak{g}$ is a simple Lie algebra or $osp_{1|n}$. Applying the quantum Hamiltonian reduction (QHR) to admissible $\hat{\frak{g}}$-modules when $\frak{g} =sl_2$ (resp. $=osp_{1|2}$) one obtains minimal series modules over the Virasoro (resp. $N=1$ superconformal algebras), which form modular invariant families. Another instance of modular invariance occurs for boundary level admissible modules, including when $\frak{g}$ is a basic Lie superalgebra. For example, if $\frak{g}=sl_{2|1}$ (resp. $=osp_{3|2}$), we thus obtain modular invariant families of $\hat{\frak{g}}$-modules, whose QHR produces the minimal series modules for the $N=2$ superconformal algebras (resp. a modular invariant family of $N=3$ superconformal algebra modules). However, in the case when $\frak{g}$ is a basic Lie superalgebra different from a simple Lie algebra or $osp_{1|n}$, modular invariance of normalized supercharacters of admissible $\hat{\frak{g}}$-modules holds outside of boundary levels only after their modification in the spirit of Zwegers' modification of mock theta functions. Applying the QHR, we obtain families of representations of $N=2,3,4$ and big $N=4$ superconformal algebras, whose modified (super)characters span an $SL_2(\mathbf{Z})$-invariant space.

A remark on boundary level admissible representations

Recently a remarkable map between 4-dimensional superconformal field theories and vertex algebras has been constructed \cite{BLLPRV15}. This has lead to new insights in the theory of characters of vertex algebras. In particular it was observed that in some cases these characters decompose in nice products \cite{XYY16}, \cite{Y16}. The purpose of this note is to explain the latter phenomena. Namely, we point out that it is immediate by our character formula \cite{KW88}, \cite{KW89} that in the case of a \textit{boundary level} the characters of admissible representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras and the corresponding $W$-algebras decompose in products in terms of the Jacobi form $ \vartheta_{11}(τ, z)$.

Classical W-algebras for gl_N and associated integrable Hamiltonian hierarchies

We apply the new method for constructing integrable Hamiltonian hierarchies of Lax type equations developed in our previous paper, to show that all W-algebras W(gl_N,f) carry such a hierarchy. As an application, we show that all vector constrained KP hierarchies and their matrix generalizations are obtained from these hierarchies by Dirac reduction, which provides the former with a bi-Poisson structure.

Finite W-algebras for gl_N

We study the quantum finite W-algebras W(gl_N,f), associated to the Lie algebra gl_N, and its arbitrary nilpotent element f. We construct for such an algebra an r_1 x r_1 matrix L(z) of Yangian type, where r_1 is the number of maximal parts of the partition corresponding to f. The matrix L(z) is the quantum finite analogue of the operator of Adler type which we introduced in the classical affine setup. As in the latter case, the matrix L(z) is obtained as a generalized quasideterminant. It should encode the whole structure of W(gl_N,f), including explicit formulas for generators and the commutation relations among them. We describe in all detail the examples of principal, rectangular and minimal nilpotent elements.

Conformal embeddings of affine vertex algebras in minimal $W$-algebras I: structural results

We find all values of $k\in \mathbb C$, for which the embedding of the maximal affine vertex algebra in a simple minimal W-algebra $W_k(\mathfrak g,θ)$ is conformal, where $\mathfrak g$ is a basic simple Lie superalgebra and $-θ$ its minimal root. In particular, it turns out that if $W_k(\mathfrak g,θ)$ does not collapse to its affine part, then the possible values of these $k$ are either $-\frac{2}{3} h^\vee$ or $-\frac{h^\vee-1}{2}$, where $h^\vee$ is the dual Coxeter number of $\mathfrak g$ for the normalization $(θ,θ)=2$. As an application of our results, we present a realization of simple affine vertex algebra $V_{-\tfrac{n+1}{2} } (sl(n+1))$ inside of the tensor product of the vertex algebra $W_{\tfrac{n-1}{2}} (sl(2| n), θ)$ (also called the Bershadsky-Knizhnik algebra) with a lattice vertex algebra.

Finite vs infinite decompositions in conformal embeddings

Building on work of the first and last author, we prove that an embedding of simple affine vertex algebras $V_{\mathbf{k}}(\mathfrak g^0)\subset V_{k}(\mathfrak g)$, corresponding to an embedding of a maximal equal rank reductive subalgebra $\mathfrak g^0$ into a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, is conformal if and only if the corresponding central charges are equal. We classify the equal rank conformal embeddings. Furthermore we describe, in almost all cases, when $V_{k}(\mathfrak g)$ decomposes finitely as a $V_{\mathbf{k}}(\mathfrak g^0)$-module.

Classification of linearly compact simple Nambu-Poisson algebras

We introduce the notion of universal odd generalized Poisson superalgebra associated to an associative algebra A, by generalizing a construction made in [5]. By making use of this notion we give a complete classification of simple linearly compact (generalized) n-Nambu-Poisson algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.

A characterization of modified mock theta functions

We give a characterization of modified (in the sense of Zwegers) mock theta functions, parallel to that of ordinary theta functions. Namely, modified mock theta functions are characterized by their analyticity properties, elliptic transformation properties, and by being annihilated by certain second order differential operators.

Double Poisson vertex algebras and non-commutative Hamiltonian equations

We develop the formalism of double Poisson vertex algebras (local and non-local) aimed at the study of non-commutative Hamiltionan PDEs. This is a generalization of the theory of double Poisson algebras, developed by Van den Bergh, which is used in the study of Hamiltonian ODEs. We apply our theory of double Poisson vertex algebras to non-commutative KP and Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies. We also construct the related non-commutative de Rham and variational complexes.

Representations of affine superalgebras and mock theta functions III

We study modular invariance of normalized supercharacters of tame integrable modules over an affine Lie superalgebra, associated to an arbitrary basic Lie superalgebra $ \mathfrak{g}. $ For this we develop a several step modification process of multivariable mock theta functions, where at each step a Zwegers' type "modifier" is used. We show that the span of the resulting modified normalized supercharacters is $ SL_2(\mathbb{Z}) $-invariant, with the transformation matrix equal, in the case the Killing form on $\mathfrak{g}$ is non-degenerate, to that for the subalgebra $ \mathfrak{g}^! $ of $ \mathfrak{g}, $ orthogonal to a maximal isotropic set of roots of $ \mathfrak{g}. $

Integrability of Dirac reduced bi-Hamiltonian equations

First, we give a brief review of the theory of the Lenard-Magri scheme for a non-local bi-Poisson structure and of the theory of Dirac reduction. These theories are used in the remainder of the paper to prove integrability of three hierarchies of bi-Hamiltonian PDE's, obtained by Dirac reduction from some generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies.

Classical W-algebras and generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies for minimal and short nilpotents

We derive explicit formulas for lambda-brackets of the affine classical W-algebras attached to the minimal and short nilpotent elements of any simple Lie algebra g. This is used to compute explicitly the first non-trivial PDE of the corresponding intgerable generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies. It turns out that a reduction of the equation corresponding to a short nilpotent is Svinolupov's equation attached to a simple Jordan algebra, while a reduction of the equation corresponding to a minimal nilpotent is an integrable Hamiltonian equation on 2h-3 functions, where h is the dual Coxeter number of g. In the case when g is sl_2 both these equations coincide with the KdV equation. In the case when g is not of type C_n, we associate to the minimal nilpotent element of g yet another generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy.

Dirac reduction for Poisson vertex algebras

We construct an analogue of Dirac's reduction for an arbitrary local or non-local Poisson bracket in the general setup of non-local Poisson vertex algebras. This leads to Dirac's reduction of an arbitrary non-local Poisson structure. We apply this construction to an example of a generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy.

On integrability of some bi-Hamiltonian two field systems of PDE

We continue the study of integrability of bi-Hamiltonian systems with a compatible pair of local Poisson structures (H_0,H_1), where H_0 is a strongly skew-adjoint operator. This is applied to the construction of some new two field integrable systems of PDE by taking the pair (H_0,H_1) in the family of compatible Poisson structures that arose in the study of cohomology of moduli spaces of curves.
