Noncommutative complete intersections and matrix integrals

We introduce a class of noncommutatative algebras called representation complete intersections (RCI). A graded associative algebra A is said to be RCI provided there exist arbitrarily large positive integers n such that the scheme Rep_n(A), of n-dimensional representations of A, is a complete intersection. We discuss examples of RCI algebras, including those arising from quivers. There is another interesting class of associative algebras called noncommutative complete intersections (NCCI). We prove that any graded RCI algebra is NCCI. We also obtain explicit formulas for the Hilbert series of each nonvanishing cyclic and Hochschild homology group of an RCI algebra. The proof involves a noncommutative cyclic Koszul complex, K(A), and a matrix integral similar to the one arising in quiver gauge theory.

Calabi-Yau algebras

We introduce some new algebraic structures arising naturally in the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and mirror symmetry. We give a universal construction of Calabi-Yau algebras in terms of a noncommutative symplectic DG algebra resolution. In dimension 3, the resolution is determined by a noncommutative potential. Representation varieties of the Calabi-Yau algebra are intimately related to the set of critical points, and to the sheaf of vanishing cycles of the potential. Numerical invariants, like ranks of cyclic homology groups, are expected to be given by `matrix integrals' over representation varieties. We discuss examples of Calabi-Yau algebras involving quivers, 3-dimensional McKay correspondence, crepant resolutions, Sklyanin algebras, hyperbolic 3-manifolds and Chern-Simons. Examples related to quantum Del Pezzo surfaces will be discussed in [EtGi].

Moyal quantization and stable homology of necklace Lie algebras

We compute the stable homology of necklace Lie algebras associated with quivers and give a construction of stable homology classes from certain $A_\infty$-categories. Our construction is a generalization of the construction of homology classes of moduli spaces of curves due to M. Kontsevich. In the second part of the paper we produce a Moyal-type quantization of the symmetric algebra of a necklace Lie algebra. The resulting quantized algebra has natural representations in the usual Moyal quantization of polynomial algebras.

Noncommutative Geometry and Quiver algebras

We develop a new framework for noncommutative differential geometry based on double derivations. This leads to the notion of moment map and of Hamiltonian reduction in noncommutative symplectic geometry. For any smooth associative algebra B, we define its noncommutative cotangent bundle T^*B, which is a basic example of noncommutative symplectic manifold. Applying Hamiltonian reduction to noncommutative cotangent bundles gives an interesting class of associative algebras, P=P(B), that includes preprojective algebras associated with quivers. Our formalism of noncommutative Hamiltonian reduction provides the space P/[P,P] with a Lie algebra structure, analogous to the Poisson bracket on the zero fiber of the moment map. In the special case where P is the preprojective algebra associated with a quiver of non-Dynkin type, we give a complete description of the Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the Hochschild cohomology of P in terms of the Lie algebra P/[P,P].

On Deformations of Associative Algebras

In a classic paper, Gerstenhaber showed that first order deformations of an associative k-algebra A are controlled by the second Hochschild cohomology group of A. More generally, any n-parameter first order deformation of A gives, due to commutativity of the cup-product on Hochschild cohomology, a morphism from the graded algebra Sym(k^n) to Ext^*(A,A), the Ext-algebra in the category of A-bimodules. We prove that any extension of the n-parameter first order deformation of A to an INFINITE ORDER formal deformation provides a canonical `lift' of the graded algebra morphism above to a dg-algebra morphism from Sym(k^n) to the dg-algebra RHom(A,A), where the Symmetric algebra Sym(k^n) is viewed as a dg-algebra (generated by the vector space $\k^n$ placed in degree 2) with zero differential.

Almost-commuting variety, D-modules, and Cherednik Algebras

We study a scheme M closely related to the set of pairs of n by n-matrices with rank 1 commutator. We show that M is a reduced complete intersection with n+1 irreducible components, which we describe. There is a distinguished Lagrangian subvariety Nil in M. We introduce a category, C, of D-modules whose characteristic variety is contained in Nil. Simple objects of that category are analogous to Lusztig's character sheaves. We construct a functor of Quantum Hamiltonian reduction from category C to the category O for type A rational Cherednik algebra.

Harish-Chandra homomorphisms and symplectic reflection algebras for wreath-products

The main result of the paper is a natural construction of the spherical subalgebra in a symplectic reflection algebra associated with a wreath-product in terms of quantum hamiltonian reduction of an algebra of differential operators on a representation space of an extended Dynkin quiver. The existence of such a construction has been conjectured in [EG]. We also present a new approach to reflection functors and shift functors for generalized preprojective algebras and symplectic reflection algebras associated with wreath-products.

Continuous Hecke algebras

We study a generalization of graded Hecke algebras introduced by Drinfeld in 1986, in which the role of a finite group G is played by a reductive algebraic group. This includes continuous generalizations of symplectic reflection algebras and of rational Cherednik algebras. We prove direct and converse PBW theorems, and also study versions of our algebras in which the group G is replaced with its Lie algebra. We also begin to develop the representation theory of continuous Hecke algebras, which unifies representation theories of real reductive groups, Drinfeld-Lusztig degenerate affine Hecke algebras, and symplectic reflection (in particular, Cherednik) algebras. The paper is dedicated to V. Drinfeld's 50-th birthday.

Double derivations and Cyclic homology

We give a new construction of cyclic homology of an associative algebra A that does not involve Connes' differential. Our approach is based on an extended version of the complex ΩA, of noncommutative differential forms on A, and is similar in spirit to the de Rham approach to equivariant cohomology. Indeed, our extended complex maps naturally to the equivariant de Rham complex of any representation scheme Rep A. We define cyclic homology as the cohomology of the total complex (ΩA)[t], d+t \cdot i, arising from two anti-commuting differentials, d and i, on ΩA. The differential d, that replaces the Connes differential B, is the Karoubi-de Rham differential. The differential i that replaces the Hochschild differential b, is a map analogous to contraction with a vector field. This new map has no commutative counterpart.

A remark on a theorem of M. Haiman

We deduce a special case of a theorem of M. Haiman concerning alternating polynomials in 2n variables from our results about almost commuting variety, obtained earlier in a joint work with W.-L. Gan.

Lectures on Noncommutative Geometry

These Lectures are based on a course on noncommutative geometry given by the author in 2003 at the University of Chicago. The lectures contain some standard material, such as Poisson and Gerstenhaber algebras, deformations, Hochschild cohomology, Serre functors, etc. We also discuss many less known as well as some new results, in particular, noncommutative Chern-Weil theory, noncommutative symplectic geometry, noncommutative differential forms and double-tangent bundles.

Deformed preprojective algebras and symplectic reflection algebras for wreath products

We determine the PBW deformations of the wreath product of a symmetric group with a deformed preprojective algebra of an affine Dynkin quiver. In particular, we show that there is precisely one parameter which does not come from deformation of the preprojective algebra. We prove that the PBW deformation is Morita equivalent to a corresponding symplectic reflection algebra for wreath product.

Quantum Groups, the loop Grassmannian, and the Springer resolution

We establish equivalences of derived categories of the following 3 categories: (1) Principal block of representations of the quantum at a root of 1; (2) G-equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution; (3) Perverse sheaves on the loop Grassmannian for the Langlands dual group. The equivalence (1)-(2) is an `enhancement' of the known expression for quantum group cohomology in terms of nilpotent variety, due to Ginzburg-Kumar. The equivalence (2)-(3) is a step towards resolving an old mystery surrounding the existense of two completely different realizations of the affine Hecke algebra which have played a key role in the proof of the Deligne-Langlands-Lusztig conjecture. One realization is in terms of locally constant functions on the flag manifold of a p-adic reductive group, while the other is in terms of equivariant K-theory of a complex (Steinberg) variety for the dual group. Our equivalence (2)-(3) may be viewed as a `categorification' of the isomorphism between the corresponding two geometric realizations of the fundamental polynomial representation of the affine Hecke algebra. The composite of the two equivalences above yields an equivalence between abelian categories of quantum group representations and perverse sheaves. A similar equivalence at an even root of unity can be deduced, following Lusztig program, from earlier deep results of Kazhdan-Lusztig and Kashiwara-Tanisaki. Our approach is independent of these results and is totally different (it does not rely on representation theory of Kac-Moody algebras). It also gives way to proving Humphreys' conjectures on tilting U_q(g)-modules, as will be explained in a separate paper.

Hamiltonian reduction and Maurer-Cartan equations

We show that solving the Maurer-Cartan equations is, essentially, the same thing as performing the Hamiltonian reduction construction. In particular, any differential graded Lie algebra equipped with an even nondegenerate invariant bilinear form gives rise to modular stacks with symplectic structures.

On the category O for rational Cherednik algebras

We study the category O of representations of the rational Cherednik algebra A attached to a complex reflection group W. We construct an exact functor, called Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov functor, from O to the category of H-modules, where H is the (finite) Iwahori-Hecke algebra associated to W. We prove that the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov functor induces an equivalence between O/O_tor, the quotient of O by the subcategory of A-modules supported on the discriminant and the category of finite-dimensional H-modules. The standard A-modules go, under this equivalence, to certain modules arising in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory of ``cells'', provided W is a Weyl group and the Hecke algebra H has equal parameters. We prove that the category O is equivalent to the module category over a finite dimensional algebra, a generalized "q-Schur algebra" associated to W.

Morita Equivalence of Cherednik Algebras

We classify the rational Cherednik algebras H_c(W) (and their spherical subalgebras) up to isomorphism and Morita equivalence in case when W is the symmetric group and `c' is a generic parameter value.
