Inflation and topology from the no-boundary state

The no-boundary wavefunction for slow-roll inflation on the 3-sphere exponentially favors a small universe, in sharp disagreement with observations. We show that this problem is resolved by changing the spatial topology to the 3-torus. The sum over the ${\rm SL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$ family of geometries, computed using the theory of automorphic forms for ${\rm GL}(3)$, produces a wavefunction favoring a large inflating universe with ${\cal N} \gtrsim 250$ e-folds. We also compute corrections to the CMB power spectrum induced by torus moduli fluctuations.

M\"obius randomness in the Hartle-Hawking state

We consider quantum cosmology for toroidal universes in d+1 dimensions. The Hilbert space is the space of square-integrable automorphic forms for GL(d). The Hartle-Hawking state is defined as a Poincar\'e sum over the no-boundary geometries. We obtain its representation in the Langlands spectral decomposition. This leads to an expression as a sum over the Riemann zeta zeros and implies that its near singularity dynamics is governed by the Hilbert-P\'olya Hamiltonian. It also takes the form of a M\"obius average of CFT partition functions which suggests a similar interpretation for the de Sitter entropy. We briefly discuss the relationship between quantum cosmology and the Langlands program.

Entanglement asymmetry in conformal field theory and holography

Entanglement asymmetry is a measure of symmetry breaking in quantum subsystems, inspired by quantum information theory, particularly suited to study out-of-equilibrium states. We study the entanglement asymmetry of a class of excited "coherent states" in conformal quantum field theories with a U(1) symmetry, employing Euclidean path-integral methods with topological symmetry defects and the replica formalism. We compute, at leading order in perturbation theory, the asymmetry for a variety of subsystems, including finite spherical subregions in flat space, in finite volume, and at positive temperature. We also study its Lorentzian time evolution, showcasing the dynamical restoration of the symmetry due to thermalization, as well as the presence of a quantum Mpemba effect. Our results are universal, and apply in any number of dimensions. We also show that the perturbative entanglement asymmetry is related to the Fisher information metric, which has a known holographic dual called Hollands-Wald canonical energy, and that it is captured by the AdS bulk charge contained in the entanglement wedge.

Quantum cosmology as automorphic dynamics

We revisit pure quantum cosmology in three dimensions. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation can be solved perturbatively and the dynamics reduces to a particle on moduli space. Its time evolution is equivalent to the $T\overline{T}$ deformation. Focusing on spacetimes with torus slices, we show that inflationary cosmologies correspond to particle trajectories in Artin's billiard. The resulting automorphic dynamics is developed both from a first and second quantized perspectives. Our main application is to give an interpretation for the Hartle-Hawking state which is here the analytic continuation of the Maloney-Witten partition function. We obtain its spectral decomposition and an exact representation as an average involving the M\"obius function.

Non-topological logarithmic corrections in minimal gauged supergravity

We compute the logarithmic correction to the entropy of asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes in minimal ${\cal N}=2$ gauged supergravity. We show that for extremal black holes the logarithmic correction computed in the near horizon geometry agrees with the result in the full geometry up to zero mode contributions, thus clarifying where the quantum degrees of freedom lie in AdS spacetimes. In contrast to flat space, we observe that the logarithmic correction for supersymmetric black holes can be non-topological in AdS as it is controlled by additional four-derivative terms other than the Euler density. The available microscopic data and results in 11d supergravity indicate that the full logarithmic correction is topological, which suggests that the topological nature of logarithmic corrections could serve as a diagnosis of whether a low-energy gravity theory admits an ultraviolet completion.

Quantum information geometry of driven CFTs

Driven quantum systems exhibit a large variety of interesting and sometimes exotic phenomena. Of particular interest are driven conformal field theories (CFTs) which describe quantum many-body systems at criticality. In this paper, we develop both a spacetime and a quantum information geometry perspective on driven 2d CFTs. We show that for a large class of driving protocols the theories admit an alternative but equivalent formulation in terms of a CFT defined on a spacetime with a time-dependent metric. We prove this equivalence both in the operator formulation as well as in the path integral description of the theory. A complementary quantum information geometric perspective for driven 2d CFTs employs the so-called Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori (BKM) metric, which is the counterpart of the Fisher metric of classical information theory, and which is obtained from a perturbative expansion of relative entropy. We compute the BKM metric for the universal sector of Virasoro excitations of a thermal state, which captures a large class of driving protocols, and find it to be a useful tool to classify and characterize different types of driving. For Möbius driving by the SL(2,R) subgroup, the BKM metric becomes the hyperbolic metric on the unit disk. We show how the non-trivial dynamics of Floquet driven CFTs is encoded in the BKM geometry via Möbius transformations. This allows us to identify ergodic and non-ergodic regimes in the driving. We also explain how holographic driven CFTs are dual to driven BTZ black holes with evolving horizons. The deformation of the black hole horizon towards and away from the asymptotic boundary provides a holographic understanding of heating and cooling in Floquet CFTs.

The Hilbert space of de Sitter quantum gravity

We obtain solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation with positive cosmological constant for a closed universe in the large-volume limit. We argue that this space of solutions provides a complete basis for the Hilbert space of quantum gravity in an asymptotically de Sitter spacetime. Our solutions take the form of a universal phase factor multiplied by distinct diffeomorphism invariant functionals, with simple Weyl transformation properties, that obey the same Ward identities as a CFT partition function. The Euclidean vacuum corresponds to a specific choice of such a functional but other choices are equally valid. Each functional can be thought of as specifying a "theory" and, in this sense, the space of solutions is like "theory space". We describe another basis for the Hilbert space where all states are represented as excitations of the vacuum that have a specific constrained structure. This gives the finite $G_N$ generalization of the basis proposed by Higuchi in terms of group averaging, which we recover in the nongravitational limit.

Holography of information in de Sitter space

We study the natural norm on the space of solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in an asymptotically de Sitter spacetime. We propose that the norm is obtained by integrating the squared wavefunctional over field configurations and dividing by the volume of the diff-and-Weyl group. We impose appropriate gauge conditions to fix the diff-and-Weyl redundancy and obtain a finite expression for the norm using the Faddeev-Popov procedure. This leads to a ghost action that has zero modes corresponding to a residual conformal subgroup of the diff-and-Weyl group. By keeping track of these zero modes, we show that Higuchi's norm for group-averaged states emerges from our prescription in the nongravitational limit. We apply our formalism to cosmological correlators and propose that they should be understood as gauge-fixed observables. We identify the symmetries of these observables. In a nongravitational theory, it is necessary to specify such correlators everywhere on a Cauchy slice to identify a state in the Hilbert space. In a theory of quantum gravity, we demonstrate a version of the principle of holography of information: cosmological correlators in an arbitrarily small region suffice to completely specify the state.

Euclidean-to-Lorentzian wormhole transition and gravitational symmetry breaking in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

We study a two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with complex couplings and a weak inter-site interaction. At low temperatures, the system is dual to a Euclidean wormhole in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity plus matter. Interestingly, the energy spectrum becomes real for sufficiently strong inter-site coupling despite the Hamiltonian being non-Hermitian. In gravity, this complex-to-real transition corresponds to a Euclidean-to-Lorentzian transition: a dynamical restoration of the gravitational SL(2,R) symmetry of the Lorentzian wormhole, broken to U(1) in the Euclidean wormhole. We show this by identifying an order parameter for the symmetry breaking and by matching the oscillating patterns of the Green's functions. Above the transition, the system can be continued to Lorentzian signature and is dual to an eternal traversable wormhole. Additionally, we observe a thermal phase transition from the wormhole to two black holes and provide a detailed matching of the associated physical quantities. The analysis of level statistics reveals that in a broad range of parameters the dynamics is quantum chaotic in the universality class of systems with time reversal invariance.

Half-wormholes in nearly AdS$_2$ holography

We find half-wormhole solutions in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity by allowing the geometry to end on a spacetime D-brane with specific boundary conditions. This theory also contains a Euclidean wormhole which leads to a factorization problem. We propose that half-wormholes provide a gravitational picture for how factorization is restored and show that the Euclidean wormhole emerges from averaging over the boundary conditions. The wormhole is known to be dual to a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with random complex couplings. We find that the free energy of the half-wormhole is strikingly similar to that of a single realization of this SYK model. These results suggest that the gravitational path integral computes an average over spacetime D-brane boundary conditions.

Holography from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

In a theory of quantum gravity, states can be represented as wavefunctionals that assign an amplitude to a given configuration of matter fields and the metric on a spatial slice. These wavefunctionals must obey a set of constraints as a consequence of the diffeomorphism invariance of the theory, the most important of which is known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We study these constraints perturbatively by expanding them to leading nontrivial order in Newton's constant about a background AdS spacetime. We show that, even within perturbation theory, any wavefunctional that solves these constraints must have specific correlations between a component of the metric at infinity and energetic excitations of matter fields or transverse-traceless gravitons. These correlations disallow strictly localized excitations. We prove perturbatively that two states or two density matrices that coincide at the boundary for an infinitesimal interval of time must coincide everywhere in the bulk. This analysis establishes a perturbative version of holography for theories of gravity coupled to matter in AdS.

Gravitational perturbations from NHEK to Kerr

We revisit the spectrum of linear axisymmetric gravitational perturbations of the (near-)extreme Kerr black hole. Our aim is to characterise those perturbations that are responsible for the deviations away from extremality, and to contrast them with the linearized perturbations treated in the Newman-Penrose formalism. For the near horizon region of the (near-)extreme Kerr solution, i.e. the (near-)NHEK background, we provide a complete characterisation of axisymmetric modes. This involves an infinite tower of propagating modes together with the much subtler low-lying mode sectors that contain the deformations driving the black hole away from extremality. Our analysis includes their effects on the line element, their contributions to Iyer-Wald charges around the NHEK geometry, and how to reconstitute them as gravitational perturbations on Kerr. We present in detail how regularity conditions along the angular variables modify the dynamical properties of the low-lying sector, and in particular their role in the new developments of nearly-AdS$_2$ holography.

From black holes to baby universes in CGHS gravity

We study $\widehat{\text{CGHS}}$ gravity, a variant of the matterless Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger model. We show that it describes a universal sector of the near horizon perturbations of non-extremal black holes in higher dimensions. In many respects this theory can be viewed as a flat space analog of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. The result for the Euclidean path integral implies that $\widehat{\text{CGHS}}$ is dual to a Gaussian ensemble that we describe in detail. The simplicity of this theory allows us to compute exact quantities such as the quenched free energy and provides a useful playground to study baby universes, averages and factorization. We also give evidence for the existence of a non-perturbative completion in terms of a matrix model. Finally, flat wormhole solutions are discussed.

Quantum hypothesis testing in many-body systems

One of the key tasks in physics is to perform measurements in order to determine the state of a system. Often, measurements are aimed at determining the values of physical parameters, but one can also ask simpler questions, such as "is the system in state A or state B?". In quantum mechanics, the latter type of measurements can be studied and optimized using the framework of quantum hypothesis testing. In many cases one can explicitly find the optimal measurement in the limit where one has simultaneous access to a large number $n$ of identical copies of the system, and estimate the expected error as $n$ becomes large. Interestingly, error estimates turn out to involve various quantum information theoretic quantities such as relative entropy, thereby giving these quantities operational meaning. In this paper we consider the application of quantum hypothesis testing to quantum many-body systems and quantum field theory. We review some of the necessary background material, and study in some detail the situation where the two states one wants to distinguish are parametrically close. The relevant error estimates involve quantities such as the variance of relative entropy, for which we prove a new inequality. We explore the optimal measurement strategy for spin chains and two-dimensional conformal field theory, focusing on the task of distinguishing reduced density matrices of subsystems. The optimal strategy turns out to be somewhat cumbersome to implement in practice, and we discuss a possible alternative strategy and the corresponding errors.

Euclidean wormhole in the SYK model

We study a two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with complex couplings, and identify a low temperature transition to a gapped phase characterized by a constant in temperature free energy. This transition is observed without introducing a coupling between the two sites, and only appears after ensemble average over the complex couplings. We propose a gravity interpretation of these results by constructing an explicit solution of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity with matter: a two-dimensional Euclidean wormhole whose geometry is the double trumpet. This solution is sustained by imaginary sources for a marginal operator, without the need of a coupling between the two boundaries. As the temperature is decreased, there is a transition from a disconnected phase with two black holes to the connected wormhole phase, in qualitative agreement with the SYK observation. The expectation value of the marginal operator is an order parameter for this transition. This illustrates in a concrete setup how a Euclidean wormhole can arise from an average over field theory couplings.

New boundary conditions for AdS$_2$

We describe new boundary conditions for AdS$_2$ in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. The asymptotic symmetry group is enhanced to $\r{Diff}(S^1)\ltimes C^\infty(S^1)$ whose breaking to $\r{SL}(2,\R)\times Ů(1)$ controls the near-AdS$_2$ dynamics. The action reduces to a boundary term which is a generalization of the Schwarzian theory and can be interpreted as the coadjoint action of the warped Virasoro group. This theory reproduces the low-energy effective action of the complex SYK model. We compute the Euclidean path integral and derive its relation to the random matrix ensemble of Saad, Shenker and Stanford. We study the flat space version of this action, and show that the corresponding path integral also gives an ensemble average, but of a much simpler nature. We explore some applications to near-extremal black holes.

Gravitation in flat spacetime from entanglement

We explore holographic entanglement entropy for Minkowski spacetime in three and four dimensions. Under some general assumptions on the putative holographic dual, the entanglement entropy associated to a special class of subregions can be computed using an analog of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. We refine the existing prescription in three dimensions and propose a generalization to four dimensions. Under reasonable assumptions on the holographic stress tensor, we show that the first law of entanglement is equivalent to the gravitational equations of motion in the bulk, linearized around Minkowski spacetime.

Breaking away from the near horizon of extreme Kerr

We study gravitational perturbations around the near horizon geometry of the (near) extreme Kerr black hole. By considering a consistent truncation for the metric fluctuations, we obtain a solution to the linearized Einstein equations. The dynamics is governed by two master fields which, in the context of the nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ correspondence, are both irrelevant operators of conformal dimension $Δ=2$. These fields control the departure from extremality by breaking the conformal symmetry of the near horizon region. One of the master fields is tied to large diffeomorphisms of the near horizon, with its equations of motion compatible with a Schwarzian effective action. The other field is essential for a consistent description of the geometry away from the horizon.
