Vanishing cycles of matrix singularities

The paper is on the vanishing topology of singular Milnor fibres of holomorphic families of arbitrary square, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices with sufficiently many parameters. We define vanishing cycles on such fibres, prove an extended form of the Damon-Pike $μ=τ$ conjecture about the families of a special type, and make first steps towards understading of the monodromy of matrix singularities. We also prove a Lyashko-Looijenga type theorem for simple matrix families, and point out a surprising relationship between certain Shephard-Todd groups, simple odd functions and a sporadic part of the Bruce-Tari simple matrix classification.

Automorphisms of $P_8$ singularities and the complex crystallographic groups

The paper completes the study of symmetries of parabolic function singularities with relation to complex crystallographic groups that was started in \cite{GM,X9}. We classify smoothable automorphisms of $P_8$ singularities which split the kernel of the intersection form on the second homology. For such automorphisms, the monodromy groups acting on the duals to the eigenspaces with degenerate intersection form are then identified as some of complex affine reflection groups tabled in \cite{P}.

Tjurina and Milnor numbers of matrix singularities

In order to understand the deformations of determinants and Pfaffians resulting from deformations of matrices, we study the deformation theory of composites $f\circ F$, with isolated singularities, where $f:Y\to\C$ has Cohen-Macaulay singular locus and $F:X\to Y$. We identify the corresponding $T^1(F)$ as (something like) the cohomology of a derived functor, and construct a canonical long exact sequence from which it follows that $$τ=μ(f\circ F)-β_0+β_1,$$ where $τ$ is the length of $T^1(F)$ and $β_i$ is the length of $Tor_i(Ø_Y/J_f,Ø_X)$. This explains numerical coincidences observed in lists of simple matrix singularities due to Bruce, Tari, Goryunov, Zakalyukin and Haslinger.

Functions on space curves

We classify simple singularities of functions on space curves. We show that their bifurcation sets have properties very similar to those of functions on smooth manifolds and complete intersections [1,2]: the k(pi, 1)-theorem for the bifurcations diagram of functions is true, and both this diagram and the discriminant are Saito's free divisors.
