Morse theory on Hamiltonian G-spaces and equivariant K-theory

Let $G$ be a torus and $M$ a compact Hamiltonian $G$-manifold with finite fixed point set $M^G$. If $T$ is a circle subgroup of $G$ with $M^G=M^T$, the $T$-moment map is a Morse function. We will show that the associated Morse stratification of $M$ by unstable manifolds gives one a canonical basis of $K_G(M)$. A key ingredient in our proof is the notion of local index $I_p(a)$ for $a\in K_G(M)$ and $p\in M^G$. We will show that corresponding to this stratification there is a basis $τ_p$, $p\in M^G$, for $K_G(M)$ as a module over $K_G(\pt)$ characterized by the property: $I_qτ_p=δ^q_p$. For $M$ a GKM manifold we give an explicit construction of these $τ_p$'s in terms of the associated GKM graph.

GKM theory for torus actions with non-isolated fixed points

Let $M^{2d}$ be a compact symplectic manifold and $T$ a compact $n$-dimensional torus. A Hamiltonian action, $τ$, of $T$ on $M$ is a GKM action if, for every $p \in M^T$, the isotropy representation of $T$ on $T_pM$ has pair-wise linearly independent weights. For such an action the projection of the set of zero and one-dimensional orbits onto $M/T$ is a regular $d$-valent graph; and Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson have proved that the equivariant cohomology of $M$ can be computed from the combinatorics of this graph. (See \cite{GKM:eqcohom}.) In this paper we define a ``GKM action with non-isolated fixed points'' to be an action, $τ$, of $T$ on $M$ with the property that for every connected component, $F$ of $M^T$ and $ p \in F$ the isotropy representation of $T$ on the normal space to $F$ at $p$ has pair-wise linearly independent weights. For such an action, we show that all components of $M^T$ are diffeomorphic and prove an analogue of the theorem above.

A vector partition function for the multiplicities of sl_k(C)

We use Gelfand-Tsetlin diagrams to write down the weight multiplicity function for the Lie algebra sl_k(C) (type A_{k-1}) as a single partition function. This allows us to apply known results about partition functions to derive interesting properties of the weight diagrams. We relate this description to that of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure from symplectic geometry, which gives a large-scale limit way to look at multiplicity diagrams. We also provide an explanation for why the weight polynomials in the boundary regions of the weight diagrams exhibit a number of linear factors. Using symplectic geometry, we prove that the partition of the permutahedron into domains of polynomiality of the Duistermaat-Heckman function is the same as that for the weight multiplicity function, and give an elementary proof of this for sl_4(C) (A_3).

How is a graph like a manifold?

In this article, we discuss some classical problems in combinatorics which can be solved by exploiting analogues between graph theory and the theory of manifolds. One well-known example is the McMullen conjecture, which was settled twenty years ago by Richard Stanley by interpreting certain combinatorial invariants of convex polytopes as the Betti numbers of a complex projective variety. Another example is the classical parallel redrawing problem, which turns out to be closely related to the problem of computing the second Betti number of a complex compact $(\C^*)^n$-manifold.

A GKM description of the equivariant cohomology ring of a homogeneous space

Let $T$ be a torus of dimension $n>1$ and $M$ a compact $T-$manifold. $M$ is a GKM manifold if the set of zero dimensional orbits in the orbit space $M/T$ is zero dimensional and the set of one dimensional orbits in $M/T$ is one dimensional. For such a manifold these sets of orbits have the structure of a labelled graph and it is known that a lot of topological information about $M$ is encoded in this graph. In this paper we prove that every compact homogeneous space $M$ of non-zero Euler characteristic is of GKM type and show that the graph associated with $M$ encodes \emph{geometric} information about $M$ as well as topological information. For example, from this graph one can detect whether $M$ admits an invariant complex structure or an invariant almost complex structure.

Symplectic implosion

Let $K$ be a compact Lie group. We introduce the process of symplectic implosion, which associates to every Hamiltonian $K$-manifold a stratified space called the imploded cross-section. It bears a resemblance to symplectic reduction, but instead of quotienting by the entire group, it cuts the symmetries down to a maximal torus of $K$. We examine the nature of the singularities and describe in detail the imploded cross-section of the cotangent bundle of $K$, which turns out to be identical to an affine variety studied by Gelfand, Vinberg, Popov, and others. Finally we show that ``quantization commutes with implosion''.

Morse theory on graphs

Let $Γ$ be a finite d-valent graph and G an n-dimensional torus. An ``action'' of G on $Γ$ is defined by a map, $α$, which assigns to each oriented edge e of $Γ$ a one-dimensional representation of G (or, alternatively, a weight, $α_e$, in the weight lattice of G). For the assignment, $e \to α_e$, to be a schematic description of a ``G-action'', these weights have to satisfy certain compatibility conditions: the GKM axioms. We attach to $(Γ, α)$ an equivariant cohomology ring, $H_G(Γ)=H(Γ,α)$. By definition this ring contains the equivariant cohomology ring of a point, $\SS(\fg^*) = H_G(pt)$, as a subring, and in this paper we will use graphical versions of standard Morse theoretical techniques to analyze the structure of $H_G(Γ)$ as an $\SS(\fg^*)$-module.

G-actions on graphs

Let G be an n-dimensional torus and $τ$ a Hamiltonian action of G on a compact symplectic manifold, M. If M is pre-quantizable one can associate with $τ$ a representation of G on a virtual vector space, Q(M), by $\spin^{\CC}$-quantization. If M is a symplectic GKM manifold we will show that several well-known theorems about this ``quantum action'' of G: for example, the convexity theorem, the Kostant multiplicity theorem and the ``quantization commutes with reduction'' theorem for circle subgroups of G, are basically just theorems about G-actions on graphs.

Combinatorial formulas for products of Thom classes

Let G be a torus of dimension n > 1 and M a compact Hamiltonian G-manifold with $M^G$ finite. A circle, $S^1$, in G is generic if $M^G = M^{S^1}$. For such a circle the moment map associated with its action on M is a perfect Morse function. Let $\{ W_p^+ ; p \in M^G\}$ be the Morse-Whitney stratification of M associated with this function, and let $τ_p^+$ be the equivariant Thom class dual to $W_p^+$. These classes form a basis of $H_G^*(M)$ as a module over $\SS(\fg^*)$ and, in particular, $$τ_p^+ τ_q^+ = \sum c_{pq}^r τ_r^+$$ with $c_{pq}^r \in \SS(\fg^*)$. For manifolds of GKM type we obtain a combinatorial description of these $τ_p^+$'s and, from this description, a combinatorial formula for $c_{pq}^r$.

One-skeleta, Betti numbers and equivariant cohomology

The one-skeleton of a G-manifold M is the set of points p in M where $\dim G_p \geq \dim G -1$; and M is a GKM manifold if the dimension of this one-skeleton is 2. Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson show that for such a manifold this one-skeleton has the structure of a ``labeled" graph, $(Γ, α)$, and that the equivariant cohomology ring of M is isomorphic to the ``cohomology ring'' of this graph. Hence, if M is symplectic, one can show that this ring is a free module over the symmetric algebra $\SS(\fg^*)$, with $b_{2i}(Γ)$ generators in dimension 2i, $b_{2i}(Γ)$ being the ``combinatorial'' 2i-th Betti number of $Γ$. In this article we show that this ``topological'' result is , in fact, a combinatorial result about graphs.

Assignments and Abstract Moment Maps

moment maps arise as a generalization of genuine moment maps on symplectic manifolds when the symplectic structure is discarded, but the relation between the mapping and the action is kept. Particular examples of abstract moment maps had been used in Hamiltonian mechanics for some time, but the abstract notion originated in the study of cobordisms of Hamiltonian group actions. In this paper we answer the question of existence of a (proper) abstract moment map for a torus action and give a necessary and sufficient condition for an abstract moment map to be associated with a pre-symplectic form. This is done by using the notion of an assignment, which is a combinatorial counterpart of an abstract moment map. Finally, we show that the space of assignments fits as the zeroth cohomology in a series of certain cohomology spaces associated with a torus action on a manifold. We study the resulting "assignment cohomology" theory.

Equivariant de Rham Theory and Graphs

Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson have recently shown that the computation of the equivariant cohomology ring of a G-manifold can be reduced to a computation in graph theory. This opens up the possibility that many of the fundamental theorems in equivariant de Rham theory may, on closer inspection, turn out simply to be theorems about graphs. In this paper we show that for some familiar theorems, this is indeed the case.

Cobordism theory and localization formulas for Hamiltonian group actions

We announce the following result and give several applications: A Hamiltonian $T$-space (for $T$ a torus) with isolated fixed points is cobordant to a disjoint union of weighted projective spaces which are constructed from its fixed point data. The applications concern the Duistermaat-Heckman formula, the topological Jeffrey-Kirwan localization theorem, and geometric quantization.
