Modified Nörlund polynomials

The modified Bernoulli numbers $B_{n}^{*}$ considered by Zagier are generalized to modified Nörlund polynomials ${B_{n}^{(\ell)*}}$. For $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$, an explicit expression for the generating function for these polynomials is obtained. Evaluations of some spectacular integrals involving Chebyshev polynomials, and of a finite sum involving integrals of the Hurwitz zeta function are also obtained. New results about the $\ell$-fold convolution of the square hyperbolic secant distribution are obtained, such as a differential-difference equation satisfied by a logarithmic moment and a closed-form expression in terms of the Barnes zeta function.

Involutions and their progenies

Any permutation has a disjoint cycle decomposition and concept generates an equivalence class on the symmetry group called the cycle-type. The main focus of this work is on permutations of restricted cycle-types, with particular emphasis on the special class of involutions and their partial sums. The paper provides generating functions, determinantal expressions, asymptotic estimates as well as arithmetic and combinatorial properties.

The finite Fourier transform of classical polynomials

The finite Fourier transform of a family of orthogonal polynomials $A_{n}(x)$, is the usual transform of the polynomial extended by $0$ outside their natural domain. Explicit expressions are given for the Legendre, Jacobi, Gegenbauer and Chebyshev families.

Identities for generalized Euler polynomials

For $N \in \mathbb{N}$, let $T_{N}$ be the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind. Expressions for the sequence of numbers $p_{\ell}^{(N)}$, defined as the coefficients in the expansion of $1/T_{N}(1/z)$, are provided. These coefficients give formulas for the classical Euler polynomials in terms of the so-called generalized Euler polynomials. The proofs are based on a probabilistic interpretation of the generalized Euler polynomials recently given by Klebanov et al. Asymptotics of $p_{\ell}^{(N)}$ are also provided.

Self-reciprocal functions, powers of the Riemann zeta function and modular-type transformations

The classical transformation of Jacobi's theta function admits a simple proof by producing an integral representation that yields this invariance apparent. This idea seems to have first appeared in the work of S. Ramanujan. Several examples of this idea have been produced by Koshlyakov, Ferrar, Guinand, Ramanujan and others. A unifying procedure to analyze these examples and natural generalizations is presented.

Generalized Fibonacci polynomials and Fibonomial coefficients

The focus of this paper is the study of generalized Fibonacci polynomials and Fibonomial coefficients. The former are polynomials {n} in variables s and t given by {0} = 0, {1} = 1, and {n} = s{n-1}+t{n-2} for n ge 2. The latter are defined by {n choose k} = {n}!/({k}!{n-k}!) where {n}! = {1}{2}...{n}. These quotients are also polynomials in s and t, and specializations give the ordinary binomial coefficients, the Fibonomial coefficients, and the q-binomial coefficients. We present some of their fundamental properties, including a more general recursion for {n}, an analogue of the binomial theorem, a new proof of the Euler-Cassini identity in this setting with applications to estimation of tails of series, and valuations when s and t take on integral values. We also study a corresponding analogue of the Catalan numbers. Conjectures and open problems are scattered throughout the paper.

On polynomials connected to powers of Bessel functions

The series expansion of a power of the modified Bessel function of the first kind is studied. This expansion involves a family of polynomials introduced by C. Bender et al. New results on these polynomials established here include recurrences in terms of Bell polynomials evaluated at values of the Bessel zeta function. A probabilistic version of an identity of Euler yields additional recurrences. Connections to the umbral formalism on Bessel functions introduced by Cholewinski are established.

Recursion Rules for the Hypergeometric Zeta Functions

The hypergeometric zeta function is defined in terms of the zeros of the Kummer function M(a, a + b; z). It is established that this function is an entire function of order 1. The classical factorization theorem of Hadamard gives an expression as an infinite product. This provides linear and quadratic recurrences for the hypergeometric zeta function. A family of associated polynomials is characterized as Appell polynomials and the underlying distribution is given explicitly in terms of the zeros of the associated hypergeometric function. These properties are also given a probabilistic interpretation in the framework of Beta distributions.

The Zagier polynomials. Part II: Arithmetic properties of coefficients

The modified Bernoulli numbers \begin{equation*} B_{n}^{*} = \sum_{r=0}^{n} \binom{n+r}{2r} \frac{B_{r}}{n+r}, \quad n > 0 \end{equation*} introduced by D. Zagier in 1998 were recently extended to the polynomial case by replacing $B_{r}$ by the Bernoulli polynomials $B_{r}(x)$. Arithmetic properties of the coefficients of these polynomials are established. In particular, the 2-adic valuation of the modified Bernoulli numbers is determined. A variety of analytic, umbral, and asymptotic methods is used to analyze these polynomials.

The Zagier modification of Bernoulli numbers and a polynomial extension. Part I

The modified B_{n}^{*} = \sum_{r=0}^{n} \binom{n+r}{2r} \frac{B_{r}}{n+r}, \quad n > 0 introduced by D. Zagier in 1998 are extended to the polynomial case by replacing $B_{r}$ by the Bernoulli polynomials $B_{r}(x)$. Properties of these new polynomials are established using the umbral method as well as classical techniques. The values of $x$ that yield periodic subsequences $B_{2n+1}^{*}(x)$ are classified. The strange 6-periodicity of $B_{2n+1}^{*}$, established by Zagier, is explained by exhibiting a decomposition of this sequence as the sum of two parts with periods 2 and 3, respectively. Similar results for modifications of Euler numbers are stated.

Broken bracelets, Molien series, paraffin wax and an elliptic curve of conductor 48

This paper introduces the concept of necklace binomial coefficients motivated by the enumeration of a special type of sequences. Several properties of these coefficients are described, including a connection between their roots and an elliptic curve. Further links are given to a physical model from quantum mechanical supersymmetry as well as properties of alkane molecules in chemistry.

The iterated integrals of ln(1 + x^2)

For a polynomial P, we consider the sequence of iterated integrals of ln P(x). This sequence is expressed in terms of the zeros of P(x). In the special case of ln(1 + x^2), arithmetic properties of certain coefficients arising are described. Similar observations are made for ln(1 + x^3).

The Evaluation of a Quartic Integral via Schwinger, Schur and Bessel

We provide additional methods for the evaluation of the integral \begin{eqnarray} N_{0,4}(a;m) & := & \int_{0}^{\infty} \frac{dx} {\left( x^{4} + 2ax^{2} + 1 \right)^{m+1}} \end{eqnarray} where $m \in {\mathbb{N}}$ and $a \in (-1, \infty)$ in the form \begin{eqnarray} N_{0,4}(a;m) & = & \fracπ{2^{m+3/2} (a+1)^{m+1/2} } P_{m}(a) \end{eqnarray} where $P_{m}(a)$ is a polynomial in $a$. The first one is based on a method of Schwinger to evaluate integrals appearing in Feynman diagrams, the second one is a byproduct of an expression for a rational integral in terms of Schur functions. Finally, the third proof, is obtained from an integral representation involving modified Bessel functions.

The action of Hecke operators on hypergeometric functions

We study the action of the Hecke operators Un on the set of hy- pergeometric functions, as well as on formal power series. We show that the spectrum of these operators on the set of hypergeometric functions is the set n^a with a an integer and n a positive integer, and that the polylogarithms play a dominant role in the study of the eigenfunctions of the Hecke operators Un on the set of hypergeometric functions. As a corollary of our results on simultaneous eigen- functions, we also obtain an apriori unrelated result regarding the behavior of completely multiplicative hypergeometric coefficients.
