We describe a conjectural classification of Poisson vertex algebras of CFT type and of Poisson vertex algebras in one differential variable (= scalar Hamiltonian operators).
We construct a calculus structure on the Lie conformal algebra cochain complex. By restricting to degree one chains, we recover the structure of a g-complex introduced in [DSK]. A special case of this construction is the variational calculus, for which we provide explicit formulas.
We find an interpretation of the complex of variational calculus in terms of the Lie conformal algebra cohomology theory. This leads to a better understanding of both theories. In particular, we give an explicit construction of the Lie conformal algebra cohomology complex, and endow it with a structure of a g-complex. On the other hand, we give an explicit construction of the complex of variational calculus in terms of skew-symmetric poly-differential operators.
We introduce the formalism of differential conformal superalgebras, which we show leads to the "correct" automorphism group functor and accompanying descent theory in the conformal setting. As an application, we classify forms of N=2 and N=4 conformal superalgebras by means of Galois cohomology.
In Section 1 we review various equivalent definitions of a vertex algebra V. The main novelty here is the definition in terms of an indefinite integral of the lambda-bracket. In Section 2 we construct, in the most general framework, the Zhu algebra Zhu_G V, an associative algebra which "controls" G-twisted representations of the vertex algebra V with a given Hamiltonian operator H. An important special case of this construction is the H-twisted Zhu algebra Zhu_H V. In Section 3 we review the theory of non-linear Lie conformal algebras (respectively non-linear Lie algebras). Their universal enveloping vertex algebras (resp. universal enveloping algebras) form an important class of freely generated vertex algebras (resp. PBW generated associative algebras). We also introduce the H-twisted Zhu non-linear Lie algebra Zhu_H R of a non-linear Lie conformal algebra R and we show that its universal enveloping algebra is isomorphic to the H-twisted Zhu algebra of the universal enveloping vertex algebra of R. After a discussion of the necessary cohomological material in Section 4, we review in Section 5 the construction and basic properties of affine and finite W-algebras, obtained by the method of quantum Hamiltonian reduction. Those are some of the most intensively studied examples of freely generated vertex algebras and PBW generated associative algebras. Applying the machinery developed in Sections 3 and 4, we then show that the H-twisted Zhu algebra of an affine W-algebra is isomorphic to the finite W-algebra, attached to the same data. In Section 6 we define the Zhu algebra of a Poisson vertex algebra, and we discuss quasiclassical limits.
We classify open maximal subalgebras of all infinite-dimensional linearly compact simple Lie superalgebras. This is applied to the classification of infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebras of vector fields, acting transitively and primitively in a formal neighborhood of a point of a finite-dimensional supermanifold.
We study the structure and representations of a family of vertex algebras obtained from affine superalgebras by quantum reduction. As an application, we obtain in a unified way free field realizations and determinant formulas for all superconformal algebras.
We introduce the notion of a non--linear Lie conformal superalgebra and prove a PBW theorem for its universal enveloping vertex algebra. We also show that conversely any graded freely generated vertex algebra is the universal enveloping algebra of a non--linear Lie conformal superalgebra. This correspondence will be applied in the subsequent work to the problem of classification of finitely generated simple graded vertex algebras.
Recently, motivated by supersymmetric gauge theory, Cachazo, Douglas, Seiberg, and Witten proposed a conjecture about finite dimensional simple Lie algebras, and checked it in the classical cases. We prove the conjecture for type G_2, and also verify a consequence of the conjecture in the general case.
We study q-integral representations of the q-gamma and the q-beta functions. This study leads to a very interesting q-constant. As an application of these integral representations, we obtain a simple conceptual proof of a family of identities for Jacobi triple product, including Jacobi's identity, and of Ramanujan's formula for the bilateral hypergeometric series.
We discuss the stability of vacua in two-dimensional gauge theory for any simple, simply connected gauge group. Making use of the representation of a vacuum in terms of a Wilson line at infinity, we determine which vacua are stable against pair production of heavy matter in the adjoint of the gauge group. By calculating correlators of Wilson loops, we reduce the problem to a problem in representation theory of Lie groups, that we solve in full generality.
In this paper we classify extensions between irreducible finite conformal modules over the Virasoro algebra, over the current algebras and over their semidirect sums.
These are corrections to the second edition of the book ``Vertex algebras for beginners'', University Lecture Series, 10, American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1998.
In this paper we study a class of modules over infinite-dimensional Lie (super)algebras, which we call conformal modules. In particular we classify and construct explicitly all irreducible conformal modules over the Virasoro and the N=1 Neveu-Schwarz algebras, and over the current algebras.
$Γ$-conformal algebra is an axiomatic description of the operator product expansion of chiral fields with simple poles at finitely many points. We classify these algebras and their representations in terms of Lie algebras and their representations with an action of the group $Γ$. To every $Γ$-conformal algebra and a character of $Γ$ we associate a Lie algebra generated by fields with the OPE with simple poles. Examples include twisted affine Kac-Moody algebras, the sin algebra (which is a ``$Γ$-conformal'' analodue of the general linear algebra) and its analogues, the algebra of pseudodifferential operators on the circle, etc.
We develop a formalism of multicomponent BKP hierarchies using elementary geometry of spinors. The multicomponent KP and the modified KP hierarchy (hence all their reductions like KdV, NLS, AKNS or DS) are reductions of the multicomponent BKP.
In our paper~\cite{KR} we began a systematic study of representations of the universal central extension $\widehat{\Cal D}\/$ of the Lie algebra of differential operators on the circle. This study was continued in the paper~\cite{FKRW} in the framework of vertex algebra theory. It was shown that the associated to $\widehat {\Cal D}\/$ simple vertex algebra $W_{1+ \infty, N}\/$ with positive integral central charge $N\/$ is isomorphic to the classical vertex algebra $W (gl_N)$, which led to a classification of modules over $W_{1 + \infty, N}$. In the present paper we study the remaining non-trivial case, that of a negative central charge $-N$. The basic tool is the decomposition of $N\/$ pairs of free charged bosons with respect to $gl_N\/$ and the commuting with $gl_N\/$ Lie algebra of infinite matrices $\widehat{gl}$.
