Finite Density QCD: a New Approach

We introduce a new approach to analyze the phase diagram of QCD at finite chemical potential and temperature, test it in the Gross-Neveu model at finite baryon density, and apply it to the study of the chemical potential-temperature phase diagram of QCD with four degenerate flavors of Kogut-Susskind type.

Strong coupling analysis of diquark condensation

The phenomenon of diquark condensation at non-zero baryon density and zero temperature is analyzed in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD. The results indicate that there is attraction in the quark-quark channel also at strong coupling, and that the attraction is more effective at high baryon density, but for infinite coupling it is not enough to produce diquark condensation. It is argued that the absence of diquark condensation is not a peculiarity of the strong coupling limit, but persists at sufficiently large finite couplings.

New Ideas in Finite Density QCD

We introduce a new approach to analyze the phase diagram of QCD at finite chemical potential and temperature, based on the definition of a generalized QCD action. Several details of the method will be discussed, with particular emphasis on the advantages respect to the imaginary chemical potential approach.

Phase structure of self-gravitating systems

The equilibrium properties of classical self-gravitating systems in the grand canonical ensemble are studied by using the correspondence with an euclidean field theory with infrared and ultraviolet cutoffs. It is shown that the system developes a first order phase transition between a low and a high density regime. In addition, due to the long range of the gravitational potential, the system is close to criticality within each phase, with the exponents of mean field theory. The coexistence of a sharp first order transition and critical behavior can explain both the presence of voids in large regions of the universe as well as the self-similar density correlations in terms of self-gravity alone.

On the thermodynamical limit of self-gravitating systems

It is shown that the diluted thermodynamical limit of a self-gravitating system proposed by de Vega and Sanchez suffers from the same problems as the usual thermodynamical limit and leads to divergent thermodynamical functions. This question is also discussed from the point of view of mean field theory.

New proposal for numerical simulations of systems with a theta-vacuum term

A new approach to perform numerical simulations of systems with a theta-vacuum term is proposed, tested, and applied to CP3 The main new ingredient of this approach is the method used to compute the probability distribution function of the topological charge at theta=0. We comment also on the possibility of applying this approach to QCD at finite baryon density.

New proposal for numerical simulations of theta-vacuum like systems

We propose a new approach to perform numerical simulations of theta-vacuum like systems, test it in two analytically solvable models, and apply it to CP^3. The main new ingredient in our approach is the method used to compute the probability distribution function of the topological charge at theta=0. We do not get unphysical phase transitions (flattening behavior of the free energy density) and reproduce the exact analytical results for the order parameter in the whole theta-range within a few percent.

Thermodynamics of Self-Gravitating Systems with Softened Potentials

The microcanonical statistical mechanics of a set of self-gravitating particles is analyzed in mean-field approach. In order to deal with an upper bounded entropy functional, a softened gravitational potential is used. The softening is achieved by truncating to N terms an expansion of the Newtonian potential in spherical Bessel functions. The order N is related to the softening at short distances. This regularization has the remarkable property that it allows for an exact solution of the mean field equation. It is found that for N not too large the absolute maximum of the entropy coincides to high accuracy with the solution of the Lane-Emden equation, which determines the mean field mass distribution for the Newtonian potential for energies larger than $E_c\approx -0.335 G M^2/R$. Below this energy a collapsing phase transition, with negative specific heat, takes place. The dependence of this result on the regularizing parameter N is discussed.

Improving the sign problem in QCD at finite density

If the fermion mass is large enough, the phase of the fermion determinant of QCD at finite density is strongly correlated with the imaginary part of the Polyakov loop. This fact can be exploited to reduce the fluctuations of the phase significantly, making numerical simulations feasible in regions of parameters where the naive brute force method does not work.

The effect of angular momentum conservation in the phase transitions of collapsing systems

The effect of angular momentum conservation in microcanonical thermodynamics is considered. This is relevant in gravitating systems, where angular momentum is conserved and the collapsing nature of the forces makes the microcanonical ensemble the proper statistical description of the physical processes. The microcanonical distribution function with non-vanishing angular momentum is obtained as a function of the coordinates of the particles. As an example, a simple model of gravitating particles, introduced by Thirring long ago, is worked out. The phase diagram contains three phases: for low values of the angular momentum $L$ the system behaves as the original model, showing a complete collapse at low energies and an entropy with a convex intruder. For intermediate values of $L$ the collapse at low energies is not complete and the entropy still has a convex intruder. For large $L$ there is neither collapse nor anomalies in the thermodynamical quantities. A short discussion of the extension of these results to more realistic situations is exposed.

Properties of the Fixed Point Lattice Dirac Operator in the Schwinger Model

We present a numerical study of the properties of the Fixed Point lattice Dirac operator in the Schwinger model. We verify the theoretical bounds on the spectrum, the existence of exact zero modes with definite chirality, and the Index Theorem. We show by explicit computation that it is possible to find an accurate approximation to the Fixed Point Dirac operator containing only very local couplings.

The index theorem in QCD with a finite cut-off

The fixed point Dirac operator on the lattice has exact chiral zero modes on topologically non-trivial gauge field configurations independently whether these configurations are smooth, or coarse. The relation $n_L-n_R = Q^{FP}$, where $n_L$ $(n_R)$ is the number of left (right)-handed zero modes and $Q^{FP}$ is the fixed point topological charge holds not only in the continuum limit, but also at finite cut-off values. The fixed point action, which is determined by classical equations, is local, has no doublers and complies with the no-go theorems by being chirally non-symmetric. The index theorem is reproduced exactly, nevertheless. In addition, the fixed point Dirac operator has no small real eigenvalues except those at zero, i.e. there are no 'exceptional configurations'.

Continuous Chiral Transition in Strongly Coupled Compact QED with the Standard Torus Topology

We analyze the phase diagram of compact QED on the torus with a chirally symmetric four fermion interaction added to the usual Wilson action. Inside a mean field approximation for the four fermion term, a line of first order phase transitions and another one of second order are found in the $(β, G)$ plane. Approaching the second order line a continuum limit can be defined. Critical exponents vary along this line in a similar way as in the non-compact model, suggesting that a non trivial interacting continuum theory can be constructed.

Investigation of spontaneous symmetry breaking from a non standard approach

We propose a new method for the study of the chiral properties of the ground state in Quantum Field Theories (QFT's) which is based on the computation of the probability distribution function (p.d.f.) of the chiral condensate in the chiral limit. We show how despite of the fact that Grassmann variables cannot be simulated on a computer, an analysis of spontaneous symmetry breaking without a symmetry breaking external field, which is standard in the case of spin systems, can also be done in QFT's with fermion degrees of freedom.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Fermion-Gauge Systems- A Non Standard Approach

We propose a new method for the study of the chiral properties of the ground state in QFT's based on the computation of the probability distribution function of the chiral condensate. It can be applied directly in the chiral limit and therefore no mass extrapolations are needed. Furthermore this approach allows to write up equations relating the chiral condensate with quantities computable by standard numerical methods, the functional form of these relations depending on the broken symmetry group. As a check, we report some results for the compact Schwinger model.
